Volume Lash Extensions make Agent S’s eyes even bigger!

$

Due to the nature of my work, applying makeup becomes a daily routine.

Eye makeup is particularly important in my routine because after all, eyes are the windows to the soul.

I LOVE my eyes.

Really.
It’s just that there are always imperfections here and there…

For example, I don’t have very pretty double eyelids, so I use double eyelid sticker to create a higher and more distinctive crease.

Similarly, my eyelashes are actually pretty long and even has a natural curl.

However the lashes are a little sparse so I have to draw a thick and extended eyeliner and use mascara to highlight and make the eyes look bigger :P

Take a closer look!

Eyeliner and mascara are therefore essential steps in my eye makeup routine.

Even though they really make my eyes look a lot prettier, both procedures take up quite a lot of time in the morning for application and in the evening for removal.

Removal especially can be very mafan… and I’m always worried that the cleaning process is not thorough enough.

I have also lost count of the number of my natural lashes that have fallen off because of lousy eye-makeup remover :(

Therefore, I dream of a time I can just wake up and look pretty immediately!

Why I was skeptical about Eyelash Extension

When Agent G from Beauty Undercover invited me down to KJStudio for a eyelash extension session, I was initially very skeptical.

I have never had my lashes extended and heard about many negative reviews and experiences from friends!

1. Take a walk down Orchard Road and it wouldn’t be too difficult to spot someone with artificially thick and unnatural lashes that look so much like fans

2. When their eyelash extensions fall out, they fall out in CLUSTERS. Leaving you looking really weird with partial lashes on one end, and nothing on the other end

3. When their extensions fall out, it pulled out your original eye lashes with it! GONE! ALL YOUR NATURAL EYELASHES GONE

4. Some even had eye irritations/sore eyes after the session because the glue went into their eyes! The beautician wasn’t skillful enough!

Above are just some of my personal observations. Of course, there are good ones around.

About KJStudio

After learning about the many bad reviews done, I went to google about KJStudio and read reviews on them.

I am pretty good at assuming Sherlock Holmes/detective’s role, but I found NOTHING but positive reviews about KJStudio.

KJStudio or Kazumi Japanese Studio is a lash extension place fully staffed by Japanese lash extension specialists!

They don’t do anything else except lash extensions and it seems like they are really good at it!

I started following them on Instagram and Facebook. I saw so many pictures of girls having pretty eyelashes, I started to feel super GIAN!

Therefore, I took a leap of faith and agreed to go for my very first session :)

It’s D-Day!

Before heading down, I was told to remove/not wear any eye makeup.

Here are some of the photos showing my naked clean eyes. (I was wearing Freshkon Winsome Brown contact lens).

As you can see, my eyes look pretty OK but the lash looks really empty / sparse without makeup on.

Through my ‘investigation”, I learnt that Kazumi-san (her English name is Jeane) is the Shop Manager and also the founder of KJStudio.

SO MANY girls have raved online about her skills and services!

When I was told that Jeane would be doing my lashes, I was so relieved!

Like what I would expect from a first-rate lash salon, they had proper procedures in place.

Before she began, I was asked to fill up my particulars and read through the T&C.

Jeane then patiently explained to me about the different type of curls and styles available and had an in-depth consultation with me to see what I would like.

Although Jeane is a Japanese, her English is PURRFECT! This is probably because she grew up in the USA when she was young and therefore speaks English very very fluently. No worries about miscommunication here!

Cute vs Sexy vs Mix style

The style will determine the distribution of the lashes and its overall look. After asking about my preferences and understanding about my occupation, Jeane picked the “Mix” style for me. It looks seductive yet professional and natural enough!

Type of Curl

KJStudio offers a variety of lashes to choose from. I opted for a more natural look and Jeane picked B-curls for me. B-curls are extremely light and has a natural curl to it.

So my final decision is…

B-curl Mix, Volume Lashes

Jeane explained that the lash extension that I’m doing this time is actually not the usual eyelash extension. This is the new service they are introducing in July 2015, called VOLUME LASH EXTENSION.

Basically, it uses multiple lash extension to each natural eyelash in a fanned shape. This allows for 200-500 eyelash extensions to be applied to each eye rather than the regular 80-100 extensions per eye. This means that multiple lahses can be applied without damaging the original eyelash. The look is also more natural, not clumpy or heavy. When multiple volume lashes are applied, they create a full and natural feather-effect look.

The therapist can apply anything from 2D up to 8D.
2D = approximately 200 lashes per eye, 3D = approximately 300 lashes per eye this can continue upto 5D. This technique can be done up to 8D, but anything over 5 D can be quite over dramatic.

Russian Volume Lashes are NOT, cluster lashes, Y lashes or W lashes! Volume lashes are a new and advanced technique in the beauty industry that is very technically demanding on the lash specialist as it contains a lot of nuance and requires a lot more skill compared to normal / classic eyelash extensions!
However, it will last much longer before you will notice you require a refill! Volume lashes are known to last at least 6 to 7 weeks!

After learning so much, I am very excited to get started!

I was led to a treatment hall with comfortable beds segregated by drawn-curtains.

Hello old lashes!

Can’t wait for your transformation!

Jeane started by applying tapes on my lower lashes to protect them during the procedure!

She then disinfected her instruments and ensured that the tapes were firmly put into place.

Jeane proceeded to clean my natural eyelashes with cotton buds before she began the lash extension. This is important as clean eyelashes will ensure that the lash extension will last longer!

I’m a little ashamed to find out that my natural eyelashes actually had mascara left over from the night before even though I had already tried to clean it thoroughly! *perils of using mascara!*

DSC09491

Strand by strand, Jean used black glue to attach the lash extensions onto my now clean naturla eyelashes 1mm away from the eyelid.

Her hand must be really very steady as she attached them so precisely!

She used a mixture of 2D to 4D lashes!
This is how a 2D lash looks like!

As my eyes were closed and the background was playing soothing music, I almost felt like I was doing a massage! Hahaha.

Throughout the 1h – 1.5hr session, there wasn’t any pain at all.
Zero!
I was trying to hard not to fall asleep, lest I opened my eyes while I snoozed away.
In fact, Jeane told me that most of her clients fell asleep.

It was that comfortable :)

Nearing the end of the procedure, Jeane used a handheld fan to blow-dry the last bit of the glue.

Finally, she removed the tapes on my eyes…

TA DAHHH!

What do you think???

美美hor!

To me, it looks so beautiful and natural, it looks as if the lash extensions were there all along!

Just in case you forgot how it looked before, here is a side by side comparison!

After the extensions were done, Jeane handled me a piece of paper with instructions on how to take care of my new lashes :)

Their service is so thorough, don’t you think?

SO HAPPY I don’t have to put up eyeliner and mascara any more!

Just in case you want to make your lashes look even more dramatic, you can purchase a mascara suitable for lash extensions from KJStudio here as well :)

Lash Extension Mascara

On the other side of the hall, there was a makeup room for us to put on makeup after the session.

I cannot stop touching my lashes now. Hahaha.

The lashes are really natural and long that I don’t even need to wear eye makeup anymore!

That would really save a lot a lot of time in the morning and at night when I remove makeup.

In total, I was given 360 strands of B curl Volume lashes, ranging from 8.9mm to 11mm.

I really love my new lashes. But of coz, nothing lasts forever. Here are some of the :( points you should take note of if you want to get your extensions!

- The extensions can last for 3 to 6 weeks, depending on how you take care of it. It has been three days since I had my extensions, and one strand of the 360 new strands has already fallen off.

- I have to be a little more careful when it comes washing my face. But that’s alright. I’ve learnt to wash my face via cupping my eyes.

- The lashes will cluster together after washing my face. After using towel to dry my face, I used a separate piece of tissue to dap the lashes dry.

- I have yet to try applying eyeliner, so I can’t comment much on the removal part. It is a good thing though, that I don’t need to apply eyeliner and mascara anymore!

All said and done, I am still getting compliments about my lashes everyday!

Thanks so much, Jeane! :D

Can Pregnant Ladies Colour their Hair? We look at Safer Hair Colour options for Pregnant Ladies in Singapore!

$
0
0

A few weeks ago, Beauty Undercover received inquiries from pregnant ladies inquiring about the safety of hair services during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

We have therefore asked hairstylists and gynaes for advice, scoured the web for information in this area and finally gathered all the tips we’ve heard in one place.

Hope you will find this useful!

1. Wait until the second trimester

396050289_a3e853f629_b

Credits: Flickr Creative Commons

Basically, there is NO concrete evidence that going for hair colours and other hair services will cause defects to the unborn child. Although limited, most research show the chemicals found in both semi-permanent and permanent colours are not highly toxic and are safe to use during pregnancy. Moreover, only small amounts of hair chemicals may be absorbed by the skin, leaving little that would be able to reach the fetus. As such, this small amount is not considered harmful to the fetus even if it is exposed.

Nevertheless, the first 12 weeks are a time of major development for your baby: organs are taking shape, muscles and vocal chords are forming, and nail beds and hair follicles are starting to develop.

Therefore, experts often advise mothers-to-be to wait until around the beginning of the second trimester (14 weeks!) before going for that hair colour that you’ve been itching to get!

Second trimester is also possibly the best time to get your hair done as the tummy is not that big yet. Therefore it is not as uncomfortable when sitting the chair for 2-3 hours as compared to when you are in your third!

2. Opt for the safest service

Once you get the go-ahead from your doctor to book the salon appointment, you may want to reconsider which service you get. Root touch-ups and a root-to-tip colour change are considered single-process colour – dye is applied to the hair and scalp, where the pores in your skin soak up the chemicals. For a safer alternative, try techniques where colour is painted directly on to the hair shaft — highlights, for example. Pulling hair through a cap and then applying colour is a less common method but equally as safe, since the cap covers the scalp.

Red Highlights (Sze Tho)

Avoid harsh hair treatments that require bleach as it contains hydrogen peroxide, which is known to be carcinogenic in large doses. Consider skipping vibrant hair colours and opting for more natural hues when you are pregnant!

It’s also interesting to note that pregnancy hormones frequently interfere with, or even change, the way your hair reacts to perm or relaxing solutions. You could easily end up with a look that is quite opposite of what you expected! Hair can get frizzy or straight instead of curly, or kinky and frizzy instead of straight. You may therefore want to consider forgoing the perm or straightening for now and opt for a style that’s easy to manage without the extra chemical treatments!

Alternatively, you can consider hair extensions which will not expose you to any chemicals at all!

We love the vibrant colour extensions carried by CLEO Hair & Make!

3. Use Naturally Derived Hair Colour that contain no / low amounts of Ammonia or PPD!

Also important to keep in mind is the type of colouring.

Previously, the type of hair colours available are limited to those with significant levels of Ammonia, PPD and Resorcinol. Although effective and produce long lasting colours, these chemicals are often toxicants or possible carcinogens that may cause allergies such as dermatitis!

In recent years, however, we see that hair product companies are innovating to reduce the levels of such chemicals and for some, even eliminate them all together!

Here are some notable brands with zero or minimal levels of such chemicals so that you can reduce the risk to your unborn fetus!

O&M

O&M: Original And Minerals

Ammonia-free, PPD-free and Resorcinol-free, O&M hair colour is possibly one of the safest hair colour option we’ve seen for pregnant ladies out there.

By blending micro colour pigment molecules with a blend of micronized mineral and natural ingredients, O&M has created a hair colour that pregnant ladies and the health-conscious can trust!

Minerals included in O&M:

  • Illute (allows micro pigment to permeate and saturate hair with colour)
  • Kaolin (guards against colour fade and ensures colour stays locked)
  • Montmorillonite (nourishes the hair and scalp to improve hair and scalp condition)

The hair colour also includes sunflower seed wax and sweet almond oil to further strengthen the hair and scalp.

As there is no ammonia, the awfully strong salon smell is absent. Best of all, it can achieve 100% grey hair coverage and up to 5 levels of lightening!

The only issue is that very few salons carry O&M due to their limited presence in Singapore.

We however know of one hair salon that carries this: Focus Hairdressing.

Read reviews for Focus Hairdressing here.

Colour Herbe

COLOUR HERBE

The “original” non-ammonia hair colouring system, Colour Herbe is one of the few (if not the only one) with:

  • No Ammonia
  • No Alcohol
  • No Parabens
  • No Perfume
  • No Odour

Colour Herbe contains natural ingredients such as Meadowfoam (which is rich in vitamins E and F), White Birth (which acts as a hair tonic and remineralizing agent) and Witch Hazel (which is rich in flavonoids and essential oils to treat the scalp) as well as Echinacea Angustifloia (which rehydrates and cleanses) to nourish your hair and scalp while making your salon experience during your pregnancy that much more comfortable, stress-free and harmless.

Do note that Colour Herbe still contains a small amount of PPD (3%) and Hydrogen Peroxide to help customers achieve longer lasting colours. The formulation is still among the gentlest in the industry so it is definitely worth a try after the first trimester!

From what we know, Koinonia Hair Salon carries Colour Herbe and based on Agent G and her mom’s experience, the hair colours can last pretty long!

Read more reviews for Koinonia Hair Salon @ Pacific Plaza here.

Aveda Colour

AVEDA

A familiar eco-friendly brand, Oxidative dyes make up only 1% to 3% synthetic ingredients of the Aveda formulations (as compared to close to 100% for typical brands). By researching into essential oils and plant extracts, Aveda has found and patented a process to oxidize the dye using green tea extract. Not only is the end process less petroleum-based, but the result is more natural looking. The common base formulas for dyes are petrochemical solvents, and in this process Aveda has substituted protective and lubricating plant oils in the formula so that it is significantly less drying to the hair than the solvents normally used.

Nevertheless, Aveda permanent hair colours still contain small amounts of PPD and peroxide in the lightening shades. This helps to make the colour more lasting but may still be of concern to some mothers.

There are quite a few Aveda Hair Salons out there but Air Salon @ Cathay is one of our most trusted ones!

Redken

Redken Ammonia Free Chromatics

Even though not free of the other chemicals, Chromatics is a permanent colour that does not have odour or ammonia. We love the vibrance and shine of this colour so for those who love the Redken range, Chromatics is definitely a healthier choice than the usual Redken colours!

Agent S tried out Redken Chromatics hair colour and loved it!

If you are interested in Redken colours, you should definitely inquire about it at Kenaris Hair Salon or Chez Vous Hair Salon!

INOA

L’Oreal Professionel’s INOA

INOA (Innovation No Ammonia) is L’Oréal Professionnel’s leading no ammonia permanent hair colour range, which apparently uses a new oil delivery system that ensures zero odour and no ammonia.

Although not free of the other chemicals, INOA is also a healthier alternative if you find L’Oreal colours attractive!

If you are thinking about colouring your hair, stick with the safest options and colour your hair without having to worry needlessly for nine months!

Pampering fit for the Queen: Agent Viv was wowed by the Branche Hair and Nail experience!

In the last few months, Branche Hair & Nail Salon have been making waves on the local hair and nail scene with their super-luxe experience at their flagship Branche Hair & Nail Salon at Capitol Piazza!

To check out if Branche is worth all the type, we invite our beautiful wedding planner and mother of a very adorable 2 year old boy, Agent Viv, to try out their hair and nail services!

July 2015

Hello, I’m Agent Viv! Going for hair visits and nail services have always been my favourite pastime. I used to go for these hair and nail services really often… Until my beloved little boy came along.

Every day has since become a struggle between my business, family and sufficient sleep that I simply have NO MORE TIME to even go to my usual hair and nail salons.

As you can see, my hair colour is dull and less presentable than I wished it could be when meeting clients!

IMG-20150708-WA0026

IMG-20150708-WA0022

My nails too have become really brittle and dry from constant washing and housework.

IMG-20150708-WA0023

When I do find the time to go for beauty services once in a really blue moon, I love to pamper myself a little because it was just not easy for me to find the time to come down.

That is why I was a little worried about trying out a new salon. However, when Agent G was so confident about Branche, I knew I just couldn’t say NO!

First Impressions

Branche certainly did not disappoint.

Branche Hair and Nail Salon

High-end looking, clean, spacious and bright, Branche totally impressed me with its interior decor.

They even had a bar counter serving Champagne, hand-roasted Japanese coffee, Matcha latte, fruit teas and all.

If their decor looked so good, I can’t wait to see how their service will be like!

Before proceeding with any services, I was directed to a nicely done up waiting area for my stylist

Waiting area for Branche

There, I was offered drinks and a warm towel that is super soft and made-in-japan! (Wow… even the towel looked premium!)

Kai, my allocated stylist for the day, came over and introduced himself.

He then provided me with an iPad to fill in some details. This is certainly something different!

After this, I was led to a VIP room for my hair and nail services.

Branche VIP Room

Both services are actually done simultaneously but for the sake of clarity, I will be talking about them separately.

Hair Service

Before starting any work on my hair, Kai patiently explained the services that Branche offers as well as the many inhouse and Japanese products they would use during the service.

During the consultation, he inquired about my preferences, which is very simply an easy to handle hairstyle that does not require time to maintain. (I’m a mommy and an entrepreneur after all!)

To make things really clear, I showed him some pictures and hair colours I’m fond of.

Kai then proceeded to do a microscopic scalp analysis.

DSC08270

He showed me the enlarged pictures of my scalp and roots. Based on the results of the analysis, he explained about my hair conditions and the products which he will use to help improve my scalp condition.

For those who are interested, they have their inhouse brand Rajunina (scalp water) and Cristalnoe (ocean blue salt) as well as other high end Japanese brands like the Milbon Aujua treatment system and the more common Kerastase.

写真 2015-03-28 16 00 14

The Rajunina is particularly popular as it contains the active ingredient nahlsgen that slows down aging!

Overall, a very informative and professional process towards improving my scalp health.

Thumbs up!

Then, the hair service finally began!

Kai decided to start the service with hair colour.

DSC07862_2

First, he sectioned my hair neatly.

Apply Hair Colour

Then, Kai began to apply hair colour to very thin strips of the hair within each foil.

DSC07907

He used so many foils that there must have been at least 30-60 foils on my head!

Kai says that this helps to create a more natural hair colour gradation and more varied colour tones which make up the special Branche Refined Colour!

For my hair colour, they actually used the L’Oreal INOA ammonia-free hair colour. That is why I don’t really smell anything while my hair gets highlighted.

DSC07962_2

Next, the application of hair colour to the rest of the hair!

DSC08104 2

This is not the end!

After the hair colour has suitably penetrated, Kai applied the Milbon Aujua Hair Treatment to repair my dry and damaged hair.

DSC08109

The treatment is really thick and I imagine very nourishing!

After letting it soak in for some time, the much anticipated hair wash comes next!

In the VIP room, you literally need not leave your seat to wash your hair! Due to the specially designed electronically controlled Yume Swing chair,  the wash basin is “brought to you”. Very cool!

Branche VIP Room

I also love how they notice the small details. Many a times when we lay to wash our hair, the ceiling light can be pretty glaring.

In the VIP room, however, the light is dimmed for your comfort to ensure that you get the best experience during the hair wash!

DSC08119

There was also no sprinkle of water whether over my face, in the ear or down my neck at all!!!! (Something that is really important to me!)

The water shower head also produces a very firm yet gentle water flow that massages your head while washing.

The water massage isn’t the only massage that was offered. Kai himself has very good massage technique and his scalp massage is something to-die-for!

DSC08127_2

Other than feeling good, Kai also applied more treatment to my hair. It is nice to note that my hair is being taken care of while I’m enjoying myself!

DSC08137

Did I also mention that I am in love with the light rose scent from all their hair products?

DSC08163 2

Back at the seat, Kai then applied the famed Rajunina Scalp Water to my hair.

While waiting for it to penetrate my scalp, Kai politely asked if I would like to have a massage on the head, neck and shoulders.

Of course I would… I LOVEEEEE massage!

DSC08170 2

To my surprise, Kai gave one of the best head, neck and shoulder massage I’ve had in my life…

Exerting just the perfect amount of pressure, it felt even better than what I get from my usual spa masseurs!

Ah… I only wished it lasted longer!

DSC08208

Next, he began on the haircut while the hair was wet.

Each cut was swift and decisive to give my hair the light airy feel.

DSC08221

Kai then proceeded to blow dry my hair.

DSC08246 2

Oh, and something I realized: the hair tools, combs and brushes they used are kept very clean. This is unlike typical hair salons, which can make you uncomfortable about their hygiene level at times!

DSC08255_2

Ta-da!

My new smooth shiny locks!

So immaculate that it looks unreal to me!!

Final

Side View

I also like the new fringe that Kai cut for me. It somehow makes me look younger and possibly slightly slimmer too!

Anyway, recall how my hair looked before:

IMG-20150708-WA0022

Now After:

DSC08327_2

Don’t you think its a lot more lively now with the many highlights within my hair?

The treatment also seems to tame the coarse and rough hair down to make it appear smoother and shinier!

Other than my hair, it seems like my scalp became healthier throughout this process as well.

DSC08275 2

As you can see from the scalp analysis, my scalp now has better circulation, less redness and oiliness after the treatment!

Nail Service

Safori is the only nailist or nail artist in Branche and is certainly a very knowledgeable and experienced one.

The first thing she did was to introduce herself to me and also the nail products they used and the variety of nail arts available.

I was really excited to see the Chanel inspired flowers and oh-so-pretty bling blings for my nails!

Jewelry Nail Art (Safori)

Don’t the crystals and embellishments look very high quality?

Safori also gave a thorough introduction of Paragel, which is the newest type of gel nails that causes ZERO damage to my nails!

It’s a little technical but basically, Paragel doesn’t need any buffing at all during application or removal so our nail plates are protected!

paragel

Next, Safori began on filing and cuticle care.

DSC07871 2

This is the part I am extremely wary about; some manicurists from other salons can be very rough and careless. In fact, I have been cut on the cuticle before! Not a nice experience!

But but… I MUST highlight, Safori is SO gentle and meticulous during filing and cutting of the dead skins around my cuticles that I do not find it scary at all!

No rough handling or pulling AT ALL!

DSC07869

I have been to many salons but it is also the FIRST TIME I’ve seen an electronic filer being used.

Branche is really high-tech and high-end!

DSC07970_2

Prior to working on the nail colours, my nails were moistened with paragel cleaner.

Then, a layer of paragel was carefully applied to my nails.

DSC07974_2

Unlike typical nail salons where nail polish colours are very simply applied, the special paragel has to be blended to achieve the desired colours.

DSC08028 2

It was so interesting looking at how it was being done… it almost felt like how we used to do painting in school!

Now I understand why Paragel is offered at so few places.. and why Safori is the only nailist in Singapore who has the educator license!

DSC08042_2

After applying the colour, Safori began working meticulously on my desired nail art design.

DSC08053 2

DSC08217

Can you guess what it is?

DSC08268 2

Now for the final touches of embellishments and jewelry.

DSC08293_2

DSC08297

As the pre-made flower was too big for my small nails, Safori even customized a Camilla for me!

DSC08316 2

Here it is!

Safori says that this can actually last me for at least a month!

Coco Chanel (Safori)

Okay let’s do a proper pose.

Final nail

REALLY LOVE IT!!!

Even though this is no easy task, Safori was able to execute the pink and silver tweed design I wanted with complementary Camilla Flower and French-Tip Manicure exactly to my imagination!

THANK YOU Kai and Safori from Branche Hair and Nail for the amazing hair and nail service!

DSC08329_2

Overall Comments

Throughout the whole process, Branche made me feel like an important customer.

It wasn’t just the nice interior decor that made me feel that way. The professionalism and skillfulness displayed by both Kai and Safori during their hair and nail service was to me a reflection of the true Japanese first class service standards.

The entire process was explained clearly at the start. Products used were of the highest of quality and considers also the hair and nail health of the customer. The stylist and nailist were both very experienced and good at what they do, giving me the style that I’ve always wanted.

Most importantly, the small details were well taken care of.

Even their beverages and refreshments were of the highest of quality. I tried the apricot fruit tea and it was simply so good that it is probably better than the teas at tea houses and even hotels!

DSC08034 2

If there was anything I hoped they could improve, it is probably their command of English.

As they have just arrived in Singapore, I needed them to repeat some of their explanations sometimes. Regardless, it did not affect the overall service delivery!

I know I’m asking too much but it might also be nice to have a small TV screen to keep us entertained during the service!

On the whole, Branche Hair & Nail Salon is definitely a place I would recommend my friends and brides to go, especially if you need a pick-me-up to freshen yourself!

Other than great hair and nail services, Branche pampers me so much, they make me feel like a Queen with their impeccable service!

I would certainly want to come back again in the near future!

Agent G reviews MUCOTA Omega Oil Therapy Perm by CLEO Hair & Make!

$

0

June 2015

Like many other people who wanted to make full use of the Hari Raya Puasa holiday, I planned for a vacation in the middle of July!

Other than booking flights and hotels, a quick check on my hair is essential as part of my must-do travel checklist!

So here’s how I look about 3 to 4 weeks before the holiday.

Before 1

DSC08478

I’m glad that the previous Mucota DYNA perm still retained some of its waves from 8 months ago but my hair is getting too long and seriously out of shape!

Therefore, when Kasahara-san from CLEO Hair and Make asked if I would like to try their all-new Mucota Omega Oil Therapy perm, I said yes immediately!

MUCOTA Omega Oil Therapy Perm

Screen Shot 2015-07-25 at 9.06.43 am

The Omega Oil Therapy Perm is the latest professional perm introduced by MUCOTA. With a greater emphasis on moisturizing the hair during the perm process, damage is minimized and the hair retains the moisturizing coat on the exterior.

Moisture is retained and hair is repaired with the inclusion of Hyaluronic Acid PCA which is more easily absorbed by the hair as well as 7 types of natural essential oils including Jojoba oils, Shea butter, Castor Oils, Rosehip, Sweet Almond Oil, Macadamia Nut Oil and meadowfoam oil. The 7 types of natural essential oils help to make the hair highly heat resistant, reconstruct damaged hair and improves the moisture content in the hair further. The essential oils also form an ion complex on the hair to prevent the chemicals from penetrating too deep, preventing hair from being “fried” from the perming!

This premium range of perm is offered only in 20 salons in Singapore and as one of Singapore top salons, CLEO is unsurprisingly chosen as one of the 20 offering this premium perm!

Reading more about the Omega Oil Therapy made me really excited to experience the perm for myself!

It’s finally D-Day!

I arrived early to CLEO Hair & Make @ The Central. It was my first time getting my hair done at the Central outlet but the elegant yet romantic CLEO décor was just as familiar.

Kasahara-san, the owner of CLEO Hair & Make and an accomplished stylist himself, was patiently waiting for me. He escorted me to my seat and discussed about the type of perm I would like to get. I showed him pictures of the perm styles I like and also shared with him about my preference for bob length perms!

Compared to the last time I was in CLEO, Kasahara-san’s command of English has improved tremendously (like the other Japanese stylists in CLEO!) and this made it easier for me to communicate my preferences to him without the need for a translator!

Once the consultation is complete, I was brought over to the hair wash area for a thorough wash.

To make sure that I did not damage my scalp before the perm, I washed my hair with only my fingers (no nails!) the night before.

Hair Wash

After the hair wash, Kasahara san shared with me some of his observations while washing my hair and examining my hair condition. Although my hair ends were slightly damaged, it was not a big concern. This was because only the hair ends were more seriously damaged and he would be able to help me trim them off.

The MUCOTA Omega Oil Therapy perm that we are going to do would also help to repair some of the damage that my hair had previously sustained!

Hair Consultation

Soon, he began trimming the hair ends.

Hair Trimming

Somehow, his shaggy hairstyle and seriousness while cutting my hair reminds me of Kimura Takuya who acted as a hairstylist in a drama Beautiful Life!

In order to create a lighter top half and a heavier look at the bottom, Kasahara san also thinned my hair a little at the top to make it thinner and more flowy. This has to be done skillfully as too much thinning will cause the hair to be unmanageable!

Hair Thinning

Looking at how carefully he thins, I know my hair is in good hands!

Next, Kasahara san applied the pre-treatment onto the hair and used a steamer to accelerate penetration of the lotion.

The pre-treatment, CS-1, contains cationic chitosan that balances the anionic hair to protect it from chemicals as well as Meadowfoam oil which locks in the natural hair proteins. It also contains Keratin to help repair existing hair imperfections! Very nourishing it seems!

Apply protecting lotion

He then applied the perming lotion to each section of my hair, twisting them as the lotion is applied.

This breaks the existing bonds in my hair so that he can mould it later on to the shape he visualizes. While this is the damaging part of the process, the pre-treatment should go a long way to prevent excessive damage!

DSC08561

The hair is then left for about 15 minutes before the wash.

After the hair wash, the heat protecting CS-2, which contains Shea butter, Jojoba seed oil and castor oil, was applied to further moisturize and protect the hair from the incoming heat.

DSC08578

Finally, the curling begins!

DSC08581

Big and medium curlers were used only on the second half of my hair to create the top light and bottom heavy look!

DSC08596

As this is a digital perm, the curlers were then connected to a machine which would heat up the curlers for a longer lasting perm.

DSC08602

Next, the neutralizer helps the hair re-form the bonds and locks in those curls.

DSC08614

A little more and we are ready for the last hair wash of the day!

Hair wash

That was perhaps my favourite part of the experience. Firm yet not too hard at just the right acupoints on the head, Kasahara san gave one of the best head massages I’ve experienced thus far. Really enjoyed the full 5 minutes of hair massage!

During the hair wash, he also applied the after-treatment CS+3 which contains macadamia nut oil, hydrolyzed collagen as well as two types of seaweed extract to improve moisture retention and promote hair regrowth!

And my hair is almost done!

Just a little more blowdrying!

DSC08652

And here is the final result!

DSC08675

DSC08678

To remind you how I looked before:

Before and After

Before and after behind

The shorter perm overall felt lighter and makes me look more my age (younger!) in my opinion!

The hair from the back did not have any heavy maggi mee curls and instead contain more elegant waves that makes the perm look really natural!

The hair also felt super soft after the perm… making it really nice to play with :D

Loving it!

 So… does it last?

Overall Thoughts

CLEO Hair & Make probably isn’t the first salon I would think of when I thought of perming my hair at first. It is after all more known for crazy, vibrant manic panic colours that looked beautifully vibrant!

Would a perm at CLEO Hair & Make would look good and last long?

Having tried their new MUCOTA Omega Oil Therapy perm, my concerns were laid to rest!

Lighter than the typical heavy Korean perm, this Japanese-style Mucota Omega Perm creates waves that look more natural and are easier to manage.

My hair also remained moisturized and not-as-dry weeks after the perm, possibly due to the many moisturizing ingredients within the MUCOTA Omega Oil Therapy perm. All I did was to apply hair moisturizers after shampoo and conditioning and blow it dry before I get out of the house so overall a really manageable hairstyle for working professionals or busy moms!

If however you are looking for stronger curls and a heavier Korean perm look, the Mucota Omega Perm may not be your best choice. Given its focus on moisturizing and protecting your hair rather than heavy curls that may cause more damage, the Mucota Omega Oil Therapy perm creates lighter waves that loosen with time, essentially a more Japanese perm look that will look its best for the initial 3-4 months!

On the whole, I really liked my perm at CLEO Hair & Make. Kasahara san was really friendly, chatting with me in the 3 hours I was there in easy to understand English. His hair massage especially left an indelible impression on me!

Many thanks to Kasahara san for the great perm and and Japanese hospitality!

DSC08684

Do however note that it is not easy to make an appointment with Kasahara san as he is not always in Singapore. Shuttling between his Tokyo and Singapore outlets, Kasahara san’s schedule is erratic so it is best to email CLEO Hair & Make at tokyo.cleo@gmail.com to check his schedule before requesting for an appointment with him.

Nevertheless, all stylists in CLEO are well trained in using the MUCOTA Omega Oil Therapy perm so in our opinion, it might not be necessary to specify Kasahara san for the Mucota Omega Perm! (after all, it does cost an additional $100 to request for him!)

Love those bouncy curls you see in Japanese magazines? Agent Y achieved those soft curls after a Digital Perm at Art Noise Japanese Hair Salon!

Continuing our perm craze this August, we have Agent Y, a lash extension specialist, try out Digital Perm at Art Noise Japanese Hair Salon.

Unlike Agent G’s bob-length MUCOTA perm, Agent Y’s perm is long, romantic and flowy.

Check out her experience if you are interested!

Hi I’m Yuki, an eyelash extension specialist and owner of My Sassy Lashes!

Trained in eyelash extensions in Japan for two years and an avid lover of Japan, I LOVE reading about Japanese hair salons on Beauty Undercover and visiting them when I have the time!

I can therefore be considered some sort of a connoisseur of Japanese hair salons in Singapore (and while in Tokyo as well).

I’ve read raving reviews about Art Noise Japanese Hair Salon on Beauty Undercover so when Agent G asked if I was interested to try out their digital perm, I was only too happy to say yes!

Art Noise Holland Village

The entire salon is spacious and feels very bright and cheery, just like their ever-friendly staff!

The moment I step into the salon, they greeted me with big smiles that made me feel oh-so-welcome!

Hiroe was my assigned stylist for the day and the first thing she did was to examine my hair and had a thorough consultation with me.

DSC08339

So this is how my hair looked like!

CIMG1806

Yuki Long Hair

Very long… I know!

I love having long flowy hair but very unfortunately, long hair is very difficult to manage and much of my hair is damaged. Worse, my hair texture is very fine and I constantly colour my hair, causing the hair ends to be relatively dry.

Hiroe provided me with a detailed consultation form before proceeding to give me an in depth consultation on my hair.

I shared with her that I prefer long hair, with soft curls that look healthy at the same time.

Professional and friendly, Hiroe patiently advised me that she will have to snip away some of the damaged hair ends, add a soft layered cut with digital creep perm and lastly a hair detox treatment to make my hair soft and silky.

DSC08340

After the consultation, she proceeded to cut my hair.

Haircut

With each snip, she cut away the damaged hair ends and created nice flowy movement that I’ve always wanted!

DSC08380

After cutting my hair, and before doing the digital creep perm, Hiroe applied treatment to my whole hair. She is very thoughtful in ensuring my hair is protected from damage and dryness knowing that my hair is relatively dry.

DSC08385

She left the treatment on for a while before shampooing my hair using the their in house brand, SHA shampoo.

The SHA Shampoo has no silicon and no smell as it is a gentle yet highly effective formula created to clarify and nourish the scalp! Interestingly, it also contains Glucosyl hesperidin, a combination of polyphenols and anti inflammatory ingredients to improve scalp circulation, stimulate hair growth and relieve any swelling. It also helps to repair damaged hair like mine to keep it silky and smooth!

DSC08390

After SHA shampooing, Hiroe applied their in house treatment product SHA to ensure that the hair is kept moisturized throughout the entire process.

SHA Treatment is also silicon free and uses 4 types of natural oils and an innovative product Perisea to lock in the hair moisture and repair damaged hair.

DSC08404

Leaving the applied SHA treatment on, Hiroe proceeded to do the digital creep perm for me.

DSC08416

She is very meticulous in making sure that my hair is not damaged by constantly checking the temperature, the perming lotion applied is not too strong, ensuring that everything is going on well for me.

I felt super pampered and very well taken care of!

DSC08423

Finally, she applied the neutralizer to fix the newly formed curls.

DSC08436

After the digital creep perm, Hiroe proceed to help me do the Hair Detox Treatment. The treatment is done at the washing space where you can lie down while having your treatment being done!

DSC08473

It is really comfortable as I almost fell asleep while doing the treatment! Hiroe washed away the perming lotion, before detoxing my hair. Next, she softened my hair texture and applied a moisture mask onto my hair. While this is being done, the sink will emit a warm mist to keep your hair soft and hydrated.

The Hair Detox Treatment process is possibly one of the most relaxing and comfortable hair treatments I’ve experienced thus far!

I may not be an expert on hair treatments but I’ve gone for many treatments at different hair salons! I find it really cool that this time, I get to lie down to do my treatment! Not only that, the treatment is applied from scalp to the ends of your hair! Most salons, the treatment are applied onto the hair avoiding the scalp. But at Art Noise, the treatment can be applied to the scalp because it is just so gentle, does not contain silicon and therefore does not clog up your pores!

It also gave me a refreshing detox feeling on the scalp and made my hair feel soft and silky!

During the treatment process, warm towels were also placed onto my head and neck to help in blood circulation! I felt really relaxed after that.

DSC08483

After the treatment, Hiroe gave me a massage on the scalp, head, neck and shoulders. It was so good I felt all my stresses melting away!

DSC08486

A little more blowdrying…

DSC08497

And we are done!

DSC08534

CIMG1881

No editing, no photoshop!

I love how much this perm resemble those perms I see in Japanese beauty magazines! Soft, silky, flowy!

I love it!

Overall Comments

There are so many things to love about Art Noise Japanese Hair Salon, I’m not too sure where to start. The ambience is lovely, the service is great and the stylist was friendly and skilled!

On top of making sure that my hair was pretty on that day, Hiroe made the extra effort to advise me on how to style my hair and how to blow dry my hair to make my hair more beautifully lasting! She also shared with me many tips on hair styling!

She also reminds me that I could give her a call or pop by anytime if I have any troubles styling my hair or if I need any hair advice!

So sweet and thoughtful, right?

Many thumbs up for excellent service and beautiful perm!

Definitely a stylist and salon that I would highly recommend my friends and customers to :)

Agent A increased his Hair Volume with a Tailored Men’s Cut from Kobayashi Hair Design!

July 2015

With my hair getting longer and the days getting hotter, no matter how busy I might have been, it was high time to visit a hair salon!

My original hairstyle – a deflated pampadour – which I have kept for the last 2 years was now too common… I wanted something else!

Some guys still look suave with a pompadour, however, I felt like I needed a fresher look.

Something new, at least to me, even if it was all a figment of my imagination!

DSC00093

 Before Haircut

To say the truth, Kobayashi has been on my “to try out” list of hair salons for the longest time because of its good reviews on Beauty Undercover and even in Hardwarezone.

Somehow I could never find the time or have the opportunity to visit them until now.

For those who want a quick summary, the rumors are true; I’m most pleased with my cut, experience, and hair massage!

(I wish the head massage was longer, however, a hair wash can only last that long.)

DSC00110

Getting myself tucked in by Purple so that nothing gets dirty!

 DSC00122

Oh my, thinning hair! And what a dorky look!

I visited Kobayashi Hair Studio on a weekday evening after work. My original stylist was unfortunately down with flu and so I was fortunately attended to by the pretty Ms Purple :D

Purple has more than 10 years of experience in making guys and girls look awesome, so I knew that my mane was safe with her!

DSC00137.jpg

Tip Alert: To appear to have a fuller head of hair (if you have tinning issues like me), keep your sides shorter so that the top looks relatively denser as compared to your sides!

While she was trying hard to suggest a suitable style for me, I was trying hard to get to know her a little better.

Although I did not manage to get her number (which I would have shared with all of you), I learned that she likes to create styles that are easy for people to maintain, believing that it is not beneficial to anyone to look great just after the cut and like s**t the next due to being unable to style or blow dry your hair like a professional.

DSC00163

Does this picture make is seem like this is the happiest haircut ever?

DSC00182

Snip snip, there goes 2 months’ worth of hair!

Initially, I was rather surprised that she was messing my hair around and cutting my hair before washing – which I’m sure you can tell – I had a decent amount of pomade on it! I would have preferred a quick rinse or wash before getting into the cut.

After further probing for her number reasoning, she shared that she prefers, where possible, to cut while the hair is dry, it is after all the state which your hair is mostly in.

In a sense WYSIWYG.

DSC00212

That intense concentration while cutting my hair~ Can’t miss a single strand!

While cutting my hair, I could tell that she has been in the trade for a long time. Her cuts were sure and precise. There was no need to grab a bunch of hair here and take a measure, another bunch there to make sure the length was even, everything seems second nature to Purple.

DSC00221

The clip makes it look like I have a mini top bun, might try that for my next hairstyle!

A few mins in her care and my hair started dropping with every cut, which seemed to me like several years of my age were falling with every cut. I did not know that my previous style was making me look that much older!

DSC00289

Wash and massage, has got to by my fav part of the visit!

 DSC00307

A quick blow dry after the wash to see how the looks stacks up after a bath.

 DSC00312

Don’t forget the front! I love the feeling of the wind in my hair~

 DSC00318

Tip Alert: When blow drying your hair, use a comb to hold it up and angle the direction of the air upwards to have a gravity defying fringe!

DSC00364

A little touch up to make sure everything is perfect!

Towards the end of the cut is where Purple’s skills truly shine. She is a master of layering. So ladies out there take note!

As I’m no expert in this field, I was rather surprised that even for someone like me with so little hair, layering would be important to add more definition to the cut.

 DSC00524

Tip Alert: To style, apply about a 10 cents or 20 cents sized amount onto the palm of your hand and rub your palms together to spread it evenly.

Next run your hands through your hair to spread the wax. Touch up with some extra wax where necessary!

DSC00547

The brand of wax if you are interested. It smells really good.

 DSC00551

We are almost done here!

Overall, I really enjoyed the cut by Purple and I’m pleased with the results.

Everyone in the office seemed to have something positive to say about my new cut!

Will definitely pop by again for another cut!

If I were to have any gripes, it would be the lack of refreshments (it was after a long day at work and who does not like to be pampered just a little?). The place was also quite filled with hair.

However, I was there for the cut and a good cut is what I got.

To summarize:

  • Experienced stylist, her skills with the scissors is unparalleled

  • Consultation is tailored to my needs and hair condition (amount)

  • Short but good hair wash/massage

  • Style requires little effort to maintain

  • The tips on how to blowdry and style were much welcomed

I like this style!

Before and After

Don’t you think it makes me look like I have more hair?

Thank you Purple and Kobayashi Hair Design for the amazing cut!

I’ll be back soon!

P.S. if you are looking to get your hair cut in the evening, pls make an appointment preferably a week before to avoid disappointments!

Best Hair Salons for Men’s Haircut in Singapore

Whether you are male or female, hair frames your face and therefore play a huge part in how you look and appear to others. That’s why at Beauty Undercover, we believe that men have as much a license to spend and maintain your hair as women do!

Nevertheless, we understand that men have different hair needs.

  • Women love to talk so some of us prefer chatty approachable hairstylists we can confide in; most men however prefer silent hairstylists who do their job well.
  • Hair massage is nice and may be peripheral to us women but for men, a good hairwash and massage can make or break a decision to return

Agent G’s Appeal: Help us help you!

I pen this list with a precarious heart. Service levels at each hair salon differ depending on who serves you, time of day, your preferences and whether a promotion is running (and so on!). Even when reviews are good, you may still not get what you expect just as supposedly bad salons may give you a pleasant surprise. Still, I strongly believe that having some sort of reference to the experiences of others is better than having none at all.

That is why Beauty Undercover rely on you to make all reviews and lists we come up with a good one.

While we appreciate any ratings you might give, we are really hoping for authentic honest opinions that would provide us with a reason why you love/hate certain salons so that you and someone else you know can get a better salon experience, the next time around!

Many Thanks :)

Is IPL or Laser Hair Removal not as effective in removing your hair as before? Agent GS tries out Depilar Hair Removal from NUA Singapore!

$

For those of us facing issues with fast growing body hair, the first few treatments that come to our mind are Epilation, Waxing or the more painless IPL and Laser. While epilation and waxing can help with temporary hair removal, they can be painful,  requires quite a long time for the procedure every few weeks and may even cause ingrown hair. IPL and laser on the other hand are not always suitable for all skin types and colour.

Recently however, we’ve discovered a new hair removal technology that is painless, fast and great for all types of skin: Depilar Hair Removal!

Applied directly onto the skin after waxing, Depilar penetrates deep into the skin and reaching papilla cells during the anagen phase with its specialized enzyme based formula that utilizes Trypsin and Chymotrypsin to inhibit hair growth.

It works on both men and women of all ages, skin type or color, hair colour or thickness and is safe even for pregnant women!

To test how well it works, we sent Agent GS, who faced some serious hairy issues of her own, down to NUA Singapore to experience Depilar Hair Removal.

Check out her experience below!

July 2015

Okay, I don’t know about you guys but I used to have loads of problems with my skin (ok, still do cause I have eczema) but it was always the worst when it came to shaving my legs!!!

Using a shaver was the worst because my skin would be so red and patchy after I’m done. I’ve tried Veet, and shaving while my legs are wet but all didn’t do the trick for me.

That was till I started epilating! My mom bought me a set and it worked wonders!

Initially, it did hurt because it’s almost like tweezing but at an accelerated rate! But after a few times, I got used to the pain and things got better!  less redness, and no itchy/irritated skin!

Only trouble with epilating my legs, is the epilation itself.

Takes me around 15 minutes to be done with my calves (I’m so hairy, it’s not even funny) and I would be sooooo damn tired thereafter. Crouching over for 15 minutes is more tiring than it sounds.

So when I got the chance to give waxing my legs a shot… Of course I couldn’t be happier!! (Who doesn’t wanna save time right?!)

And to sweeten the deal, it was at a renowned Japanese wax & beauty salon!!!

So yes, here’s where I spent my Saturday evening at: NUA Singapore!

NUA Singapore

Now before you start laughing, NUA is derived from the Portuguese adjective to mean “Nude”, and definitely not the Singaporean context of Nua.

NUA Singapore

Located at the 2nd level of 18A Tanjong Pagar Rd, it’s a little difficult to find but if you use google maps you can just look out for the StarKing KBBQ shop because it’s right beside it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The place itself isn’t very big, but it’s definitely very welcoming and cosy the moment you step in!
Don’t forget to remove your shoes, like I did though! Hehe.
My appointment was with Shiori, the founder of NUA Singapore, who was really welcoming to both X (my personal photographer for the day haha) and I!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Here she is explaining what she would be doing today, which is waxing my calves and *BONUS* letting me try the newest hair removal gel treatment – Depilar! (More on that soon!)

Pardon the face, I was listening attentively!

So let’s begin!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Wax all heated up, and ready to go!

Waxing

My hairy calves are ready to be hairless again! Teehee!

I won’t ruin your reading experience with a gross image of my leg hairs, but who doesn’t wanna see a “before & after” picture right?

So keep reading for the slideshow video I did to showcase the effectiveness!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Spreading the wax evenly!

I appreciated that the wax wasn’t too hot (some places really don’t QC the temperature of their wax) and that it cooled really quickly on my skin!

I also thought she was gonna lay some strips over the hot wax but…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

She didn’t at all!

She simply peeled the wax that had already cooled and formed a layer off in one swift motion!!

Really amazing and efficient, I must say!

No wonder everything happened really quickly lol

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

So after Shiori was done with waxing, she applied the Depilar Hair Removal Gel treatment I mentioned earlier in 2 steps!

What its application does is it…

- slows down the re-growth of hair
- makes subsequent hair finer, and the removal would be easier

Something like IPL, but totally painless!
With a combination of proteins & enzyme based formula, it slows down and eventually stops hair growth!

I heard if it’s applied every 5-6 weeks, that’s when the results are best!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

First bottle of gel spritzed onto my calf and massaged in, followed by the second bottle!

I was told that you would be able to see a noticeable decrease in hair growth after the fourth session! That’s pretty quick, ain’t it??

For it to completely remove ALL your hair, it would require successive and regular Depilar Applications over 16 to 24 months through a complete 1-2 year hair growth cycle!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Best of all, it’s suitable for all skin and hair types – from sensitive skin to thick hair!

Definitely worth a shot for both ladies and men alike!

Shiori shared that most of her male customers find Depilar effective for their previously stubborn hair growth issues as compared to IPL! Which is cool because I always thought IPL was the only way to remove hair permanently hehe

Oh yes and pregnant ladies can opt for this treatment > IPL if they are worried for their baby… good right!

I was done with the waxing and Depilar treatment in less than half an hour, and I was feeling great about the whole experience

If you wanna take a look at the before and after images, do click into the video above!

Don’t get shocked at my grizzly bear like legs ok! I’ve warned you!

Definitely enjoyed my experience over at NUA, and loved the hospitality of Shiori who was a pleasure to talk to.

Oh and if you’re intending to head over to try out their Depilar treatment, you may wanna avoid showering 2 hours before and wear shorts + bring a small towel with you (to put on your car seat) as the gel stays a little sticky till you shower!

Do try to stay outta the sun 24 hours after the treatment if you can! And wear sunscreen ok!

14 Skin Care Myths You Need To Correct Right Now!

$

Flip through the pages of your favorite fashion magazine or check out a beauty blog, and you’re likely to get a whole lot of advice. Amidst the constant buzz about new, must-have products, the influx of anti-aging treatments, and skin-care advice from every corner, it’s hard to separate the hype from reality.

Ever had someone say that dry skin can be fixed just by drinking more water, or that tingling skin means a product is working? With all the myths circulating skin care, it’s bound to get confusing. What should you believe?

We compile our favourite now-debunked skin care myths and give you the facts about some commonly held beauty beliefs. Read on to learn the truth behind what really works for your skin!

Cucumber Face

Credits: All Ladies Fashion

Myth #1: Cucumber Slices Relieves Puffy Eye Bags!

Unless you’ve been living under the rock for the past 20 years, you have probably seen celebrities or models applying cucumber slices as part of their skincare routine in movies and pictures!

Is it really useful in relieving those persistent eyebags?

According to dermatologists and Eunice from Geranium Skin Boutique, refrigerated cucumber pieces do help to shrink blood vessels beneath the skin, reduce accumulated fluid and relieve puffy eyes… TEMPORARILY. However, it is definitely not a long term solution to puffy eyebags. Most of the time, it is a surgical issue but changes in diet and lifestyle are probably the biggest factors that can help you reverse those annoying eyebags!

Of course, you can always try to go for eye treatments at Geranium Skin Boutique or NUA Singapore to accelerate the process!

Toothpaste pimple

Credits: Listnovative

Myth #2: Applying toothpaste helps to eliminate pimples!

Some of us may have tried this before… applying toothpaste directly on smaller zits or pimples and voila it goes away in half a day! While this trick may be useful for some, it is actually not a recommended skin care practice!

The reason why it works is because toothpaste contains alcohol which can dry up pimples and reduce redness and swelling. Just because the bump becomes smaller, however, it does not mean that it won’t return! Moreover, the chemicals for your toothpaste may be too strong for our skin, leaving scars and cause hyperpigmentation which may be permanent… making it more of a problem than those temporary zits in the future!

Myth #3: You’ll eventually outgrow acne.

If only that were true! Unfortunately, women in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and even 50s can have acne, just like teenagers.

Not everyone who has acne as a teenager will grow out of it, and even if you had clear skin as a teenager, there’s no guarantee that you won’t get acne later in life, perhaps during menopause. Blame it on our hormones! While men can outgrow acne (because after puberty, men’s hormone levels level out), women’s hormone levels fluctuate throughout their lifetime, which is why many women experience breakouts around their menstrual cycle. What about the association between acne and food, stress, and over-cleaning your face?

Myth #4: If you clean your face better, you can clear up your acne.

Over-cleaning or scrubbing your face can actually make matters worse!

how acne

Acne is caused primarily by hormonal fluctuations that affect the oil gland, creating an environment where acne-causing bacteria can flourish. Don’t confuse scrubbing or “deep cleaning” with helping acne, because it absolutely doesn’t! Over-cleansing your face triggers inflammation that actually makes acne worse. What really helps breakouts is using a gentle cleanser so you don’t damage your skin’s outer barrier or create inflammation (both of which hinder your skin’s ability to heal and fight bacteria) and using gentle exfoliation. An effective exfoliating product that contains salicylic acid or glycolic acid can make all the difference in reducing acne and the red marks it leaves behind.

Myth #5: Make-up causes acne.

Probably not. There is no research indicating that make-up or skin-care products cause acne, and there is no consensus on which ingredients are problematic.

In fact, Shiori from NUA Singapore suggests that wearing makeup can actually improve skin health as most primers and foundations contain SPF, giving you additional protection to the sun.

While there has been no conclusive research to date on whether make-up or skin-care products cause acne, women do experience breakouts after using certain products. Such breakouts can be the result of an irritant or an inflammatory response, a random skin reaction, or a result of problematic ingredients unique to a person’s skin type. That means you have to experiment to see what might be causing your breakouts.

Non comedogenic makeup

But as a general rule, you should always try to look out for non-comedogenic makeup and cleansing products that do not clog your pores! Most non-comedogenic products are oil-free and irritant-free. They are also likely to contain the following ingredients to help reduce skin inflammation!

  • Aloe vera extract: Soothing, anti-inflammatory and moisturizing
  • Chamomile flower extract: Rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds that can help create smoother looking skin
  • Jojoba seed oil: Natural, non-pore clogging moisturizer
  • Calendula flower extract: Anti-inflammatory compounds that can help irritated skin
  • Witch hazel extract: Natural astringent that can help support normal hydration levels in the skin
  • Tea tree extract: Natural antibacterial ingredient that can help fight acne and help maintain skin’s pH balance
  • Willow bark extract: Naturally produces salicylic acid which can help declog pores and exfoliate skin
If you need help selecting your non-comedogenic makeup, you can consider going to japanese facial salons NUA Singapore or Queen’s Market who carry such products for their acne-prone customers!

Myth #6: Age spots are simply inevitable as you get older.

Age Spots

Credits: Flickr Creative Commons

The term “age spot” is really a misnomer. Brown, freckle-like skin discolourations are not a result of age. They are the result of years of unprotected sun exposure.

Sun spots can show up at any age, from the freckles sprinkled across a child’s nose to smooth, flat brown discolorations you may see as early as your mid-20s. At any age, treating sun-induced brown discolourations doesn’t necessarily require a specialty product, but it does take proven ingredients (like hydroquinone, niacinamide, and forms of vitamin C) plus daily sun protection to make a noticeable, lasting difference.

Myth #7: There’s a miracle product out there that eliminates wrinkles.

As Grace from a top local salon in Singapore Geranium Skin Boutique shares with us, no  there is no magic potion or combination of products in any price range that can make wrinkles truly disappear or prevent them.

Good maintenance, beauty regime and hard work including the daily use of a well-formulated sunscreen are however the only way that we can age confidently, gracefully and naturally!

The wrinkles you see and agonize over (not to be confused with fine lines caused by dryness, which are easily remedied with a good moisturizer) are the result of cumulative sun damage and the inevitable breakdown of your skin’s natural support structure. Skin-care ingredients, no matter who is selling them or what claims they make for them, cannot replace what plastic surgeons and cosmetic dermatologists do.

But if invasive and often unnatural aesthetic techniques and plastic surgery is not your style, here are less invasive ways that can help you slow down the natural ageing process:

guasha facial

As mentioned, wrinkles form because of the breakdown of your skin’s natural support system and buildup of toxins. Grace has therefore created Geranium’s award-winning Face Toning TM that stimulates facial muscles to encourage the skin to continuously renew itself and remove toxins from the lymphatic system so that the skin cells can function more healthily and more effectively absorb nutrients, antioxidants and minerals for younger and glowin skin. This is done through combining the western Microdermabrasion with the eastern Gua Sha therapy that has shown to to help many customers reduce the number of wrinkles and give a more firm V-shaped face contour!

Lymphatic Facial Massage

Queen Market’s Ion Remedy Massage works on a similar principle by using an all-hand lymphatic massage to remove accumulated waste products from the face and an application of an Ion cream to boost metabolism for the skin’s natural support system and reduce wrinkles! Maki also recommends their new Dr Arrivo facial which has taken Japan, China and Taiwan by storm! By using ultra pulses, EMS and LED, the skin tightens immediately while acne scars and pigmentation appears to disappear at a surprisingly fast speed.
10. Ultrasound to remove dead skin
Shiori from NUA Singapore attacks the onslaught of ageing from another angle: by using Ultrasound and Microcurrent to stimulate collagen and Elastin Production. Unlike laser treatments that simply target outer layers of skin, ultrasound therapy bypasses the skin’s surface and delivers the collagen stimulating ultrasound to deepest layers of the skin. As the dermis layer of the skin contains most of the skin’s specialized cells and structures, it synthesizes less collagen each year after about age 20 and further after menopause, leaving the skin drier, thinner, and not as taut as before. Once the dermis begins producing the new collagen, sagging facial and neck skin lifts and starts to look younger and tighter! Microcurrent on the other hand is a low level of electricity that mirrors the body‘s own natural electrical currents, triggering chemical reactions at a cellular level to enhance the production of natural collagen and elastin, provide circulatory benefits, and re-educate the muscles of the face.
By combining both Ultrasound and Microcurrent, customers can experience immediate firming, smoothing, and re-hydration of the skin while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, basically achieving a facelift without the surgical procedures.
If these maintenance procedures are done on a more regular basis by a reliable and trustworthy facial therapist, you can be sure that far fewer wrinkles will appear on your face than ladies of a similar age… even without going for plastic surgery!

Myth #8: Blackheads are a sign of dirt accumulation and can be scrubbed away.

Blackheads may make your skin look dirty, but they are unrelated to dirt!

Blackheads are formed when hormones cause too much sebum to be produced, dead skin cells get in the way, the pore is impaired or mis-shapen, and the path for the oil to exit through the pore is blocked, creating a clog. As this clog nears the surface of the skin, the mixture of oil and cellular debris oxidizes and turns black. Unfortunately, you cannot scrub away blackheads, at least not completely. Using a topical scrub removes the top portion of the blackhead, but does nothing to address the underlying cause, so they’re back again before too long. Instead of a scrub, try using a well-formulated BHA (salicylic acid) product. Salicylic acid exfoliates inside the pore lining, dissolving oil and dead skin cells that lead to constant blackheads.

Myth #9: All visible blackheads should be removed by manual extraction all at one go

Every time we go for a facial, extraction is a painful yet must-have procedure for most of us as it helps get rid of those annoying blackheads! Some of us think that the more aggressive the facial therapist with extraction, the better!
Well, that’s not exactly the case!
Shiori from NUA Singapore shared that blackheads that are buried too deep are not recommended to be removed during extraction all at once! This is because aggressive extraction is usually the cause of long term scarring and pigmentation which can take months to heal! Instead, it is better to exfoliate the area twice or 3 times a week and wait for a month before going back to a skincare professional to remove the blackheads when it is ready to be removed!
Extraction of Blackheads... Painless!

Myth #10: If you have dry skin, drink more water.

3413361556_6f731aaa87_z

Credits: Flickr Creative Commons

Ironically, dry skin is not as simple as just a lack of moisture. Drinking more water won’t make dry skin look or feel better.

The studies that have compared the water content of dry skin to that of normal or oily skin show that there doesn’t appear to be a statistically significant difference. Adding more moisture to the skin is also not necessarily a good thing. If anything, too much moisture, like soaking in a bathtub, is bad for the skin because it disrupts the skin’s outer barrier by breaking down the substances that keep skin cells functioning normally and in good shape. So how does dry skin happen?

What is thought to be taking place when dry skin occurs is that the substances between skin cells that keep them intact, smooth, and healthy has become depleted or damaged, bringing about a rough, uneven, and flaky texture that allows water to be lost. However, adding water won’t keep that moisture in the skin unless the outer barrier is maintained or repaired. To prevent dry skin, the primary goal is to avoid and reduce anything that damages the outer barrier, including sun damage, products that contain irritating ingredients, alcohol, drying cleansers, and smoking.

All of the research about dry skin is related to the ingredients and treatments that reinforce the substances in skin that keep it functioning normally.

Myth #11: Your skin adapts to products you use and eventually stop working.

Skin doesn’t adapt to skin-care products any more than your body adapts to a healthy diet.

If spinach and grapes are healthy for you, they are always healthy and they continue to be healthy, even if you eat them every day. The same is true for your skin, as long as you are applying what is healthy for it (and avoiding negative external sources such as unprotected sun exposure). You may see skin stop improving as much as it initially did, but the explanation for that is simple: If you were using products with irritating or drying ingredients and then switched to brilliantly-formulated products, your initial improvement is going to be much more significant than what you’ll see months later, when your skin is maintaining its new-found healthy, younger appearance.

Myth #12: The higher the SPF, the better the protection.

Sunblock

There are three kinds of ultraviolet (UV) rays: UVA, UVB and UVC. UVA rays penetrate the skin fairly deeply, altering your pigmentation to produce a tan. UVB rays are the primary sunburn rays. These rays also damage your skin’s DNA and cause photoaging, pigment changes, and carcinomas (cancerous tumors). UVC rays are absorbed by the atmosphere and don’t make it to the ground.

The SPF rating is a measure of the time it would take you to sunburn if you were not wearing sunscreen as opposed to the time it would take with sunscreen on. Sunscreens with higher SPF ratings block slightly more UVB rays, but none offers 100% protection. The difference in sunburn protection between the medium- and high-SPF sunscreens is not great. Look for an SPF of 30 and one of the following ingredients: mexoryl, oxybenzone or avobenzone for UVA protection, or titanium dioxide.

Myth #13: You don’t need sunscreen on a cloudy day.

Even on a cloudy day, UV radiation from the sun reaches the earth’s surface.

The sun’s rays lead to more than 80 percent of the changes that result in wrinkles, age spots, dilated blood vessels, spider veins, red bumps, growths and raised dark spots. UVA rays are a product not just of direct sun but of all natural light, capable of reaching the skin through glass, clouds and smog. In other words, there is no such thing as a sunless day.

Also, don’t fall prey to the myth that you’re protected just because you’re wearing make-up with an SPF. According to research, you would have to put on 14 or 15 times the amount of make-up that a normal person would wear to reach the SPF on the label of powdered make-up. The same thing goes for foundation and liquid make-up.

Make sure you use sunscreen everyday in addition to your makeup, and reapply it every two hours as well as after swimming or sweating!

Myth #14: Your Toner acts like your second cleanser

Toners

As founder and therapist at Geranium Skin Boutique, Grace shared that she has heard many customers commenting the following: “Aren’t toners supposed to be like your second cleanser? Every time I use the toner on a cotton wool, I still see dirt or residue left behind!”

Toners are an important yet misunderstood step in your daily program. Toners are NOT a second cleanser. If you find that you still have dirt on your cotton wool, it means that you didn’t get your skin clean so you better go back to your first step of Cleansing again!

Cleansers cleanse while toners tone or prepare. Toners prepare your skin for a moisturizer by reacidifying your skin to replace your skin’s naturally low pH which is disrupted with gentle cleansers. Toners also contain hydration ingredients to hydrate your skin!

14 Things You Wished Your Hairstylist Told You Before Colouring your Hair

$

Do you find yourself envious of colleagues or friends who have vibrant hair colours, and wish you could colour your hair that perfect shade that screams you? With each new year or special occasion, we find ourselves looking for our own way to physically express a look that is uniquely us. But before you make the big commitment to colour your hair with permanent dye (especially for those with virgin, undamaged hair), find out what you really need to consider before booking a colour appointment. We answer the most commonly asked questions about hair colouring to help you ensure you’re happy with the results and protect your hair in the process!

1. Before I decide on a colour, what should I consider?

Research current colour trends and celebrity-inspired looks and bring a few pictures to your stylist as a starting point. Most importantly, think about maintenance! Depending on the colour change, it can require more upkeep. You have to consider how often you are willing to colour your hair, and how much you are willing to spend. Is the change so dramatic that frequent salon visits are required to keep your hair colour vibrant? If so, make sure you are budgeting for it. Juno from Artica Hair Studio shares that the hair colour should also fit your work and overall lifestyle; does your company allow such vibrant colours? Do you have any outfit to match the new colours? Hair and choice of clothing affects your overall look significantly. Therefore, you may want to consider how the new hair colour will impact your overall wardrobe before plunging in! For those who want to try a vibrant colour, keeping it hidden within gives you the option to look professional and chic when you want to!

Ash and Blue (Juno)Pink Block Colour (Juno)Block Colour (Bell)

Jesly from Picasso Hair Studio also reminds us that vibrant hair colours or light ash tones often require bleaching. As bleached hair cannot be permed later on due to excessive damage, you would have to keep that in mind before going for vibrant hair colours like those we see below!

3C Hair Colour (Jesly)3C Hair Colour Dream Romance (Jesly)3C Hair Colour Fiery Passion (Jeremy)

2. Are hair-colouring chemicals harmful?

Dyeing your hair can weaken it, which is why stylists stress the importance of using conditioning treatments and colour-specific products. Colouring formulas can irritate your scalp if it’s extremely sensitive. About 30 years ago, concern arose that chemicals in the coloring process might increase the risk for certain cancers in those who dye their hair, but most large studies since then have been reassuring. Most hair colours now are also considered safe to use during pregnancy. We wrote a special feature on hair colours safe for pregnancy here a while ago so check it out if you are interested! Whether or not you are pregnant, it is always wise to learn more about the hair chemicals that are used in your hair… particularly if you colour your hair often! Many hair colours contain harmful chemicals such as Ammonia, PPD and Resorcinol. Although effective and produce long lasting colours, these chemicals are often toxicants or possible carcinogens that may cause allergies such as dermatitis. Therefore if you have sensitive skin, you should search for salons that offer hair colours with lower levels of Ammonia, PPD and Resorcinol!

Our favourite so far is Original and Minerals from Australia which has eliminated all three harmful chemicals altogether. They are available at Focus Hairdressing but are unfortunately often short in supply.

O&M

Colour Herbe from Koinonia Hair Salon, Aveda Hair colour from Air Salon as well as Redken Chromatic Hair Colour (it can be found both in Kenaris Hair Salon and Chez Vous Hair Salon) and L’Oreal INOA are also good alternatives that can be found more readily at your favourite hair salons!

3. Are there any tricks to figuring out how my desired colour will look on me?

Light-skinned, light-eyed women look more natural with lighter shades, while women with darker hair and skin look better in darker shades. If you have a lot of pink in your skin, avoid warmth in a hair colour because it will make you look flushed. Those who have olive skin tones should opt for gold tones, which bring warmth to the face and make skin look less green. If your skin tone is neutral, with no pink or green, you can wear either warm or cool blond shades.

If possible, try on a wig of a similar colour or style that you are interested in – do you feel comfortable or foolish in the colour? Don’t feel obligated to jump in headfirst. If you’re unsure (or if it’s your first time colouring your hair), consider making your colour change in small doses. Instead of going for a complete dye, add a few highlights to slowly transition into a new colour.

Even if you know what colour you want going into the process, make sure you ask your stylist if a cool or warm shade is more suitable for you. You want an expert opinion!

4. Should I go darker or lighter?

If you’re thinking about going darker, know that it’s a change you’ll need to stick with! There is no easy way to go from light to dark and back to light. It’ll take you several visits to the salon to get your dark hair light again. This may also mean more damage for our typically dark Asian hair!

Likewise, if you’re thinking about going lighter, take it slowly. It’s more damaging to your strands, and depending on how dramatic a change you’re making, there’s a good chance you’ll need more than one appointment. The health of your hair will play a huge part in the retention of colour. If you want to go a lot lighter — more than two shades — it will take more than one visit. Unlike celebrities who often make a drastic hair change in one day, it’s not recommended to go from a dark color to a bright blonde in one visit.

Another thing to consider when making a big colour change are your eyebrows. While the dark brow-meets-light hair look is very trendy, you may not like the look on you. If it’s not for you, it’s common to lighten the eyebrows by lifting the colour. Are you ready to do so for your lighter hair?

Once you’ve decided on the hair colour, be sure to communicate it properly to your hairstylist. Xavier from Vast Hair Salon mentioned that miscommunication often occur as hairstylists and customers have different definitions of brighter vs darker colours.

hair-dye-colour-chart-numbers

In choosing the right hair colour, the stylist has to pick:

1) Depth of Colour: This typically ranges from 0-12

2) Colour Tone: Colour tones refer to actual colour tones like red, blue, yellow, copper, violet and ash colours.

The balance between the two will give the final colour. Take a Level 8 Red as an example. A Level 8 Red Colour actually ends up looking like Copper Red on Asian hair!

So this leads us to our next question…

5. Do I have to bring pictures to the salon?

A picture is worth a thousand words! We all see colour differently. Red, copper, beige and brassiness are all in the eyes of the beholder, so having pictures helps to make sure that you and your stylist are on the same page. If you’re new to colouring, it also helps to do a little research on hair colouring terms and products (i.e. demi-, permanent, lighteners). This will give you a basic understanding of some of the terms your stylist will be using.

Also, the colour chart presented to you by your stylist isn’t always that accurate. According to Xavier from Vast Hair Salon, the colour chart do not always match with the benchmark colours from the manufacturer. This is because the chemical colour often react with the our natural hair colour pigment to produce the eventual colour. Some inexperienced stylists may therefore make the mistake of following the charts blindly. This also explains why some Caucasian customers find it hard to get a stylist who can achieve their intended colours in Singapore and why Asians tend to get better colour results from Asian stylists as well.

It is only through constant experimentation and years of experience can a hairstylist achieve colour tones close to the actual desired colours for customers of all hair types. That is why it is important to go to an experienced stylist and present them with a good picture, particularly if you are intending to achieve challenging hair colours.

You can tell how experienced the stylist is by how comfortable he is with the colour presented in the photos; Xavier himself no longer uses colour charts as he finds that pictures tend to portray and capture customers’ desires a lot more accurately than colour charts!

6. So what exactly are the common hair colouring terms, and what do they mean?

  • Semi vs. Permanent

Semi-permanent colour — also known as semi-colour or acid colour — contains pigments that coat the outside of the hair shafts and wash out in about five to seven weeks. This also means it doesn’t lighten or cover tough greys. Semi-colours are good if you’re wary of a big commitment to colour or if you just want a subtle change. Permanent hair colour, on the other hand, typically contains ammonia to open the hair cuticles, so colour gets deposited inside the shafts. It may also contain peroxide, which bleaches out hair’s natural tones. A permanent dye job can lighten hair, completely change its shade, and fully cover gray, but maintenance is high. It can darken the tone of your current shade and cover a few gray hairs, but it can’t address a full head of white strands. Your roots will be obvious.

  • INTERESTING TITBIT from Picasso Hair Studio: Unlike Permanent Hair Color where hair color will fade fastest on dry hair, Semi Permanent Hair Color is more lasting on dry Hair than on Healthy Hair.
  • Single vs. Double

The chosen colour is applied directly onto hair during a single-process hair colour. It can lighten or darken the hair, and it can be a semi-permanent or permanent colour. A double process involves lightening the original hair colour before applying the chosen colour. Because of the chemicals usually involved during a double process, it is also harder on the hair and more high-maintenance.

  • Highlights

There are dozens of ways to highlight hair, including the current trendy balayage technique (hand-painting the hair with highlights), using fingers or a spatula to deposit a lightening cocktail and, of course, foiling, which involves strategic strands of hair painted, then wrapped up into neat little packets and left to lighten. It’s important to know what effect you’d like as that helps your stylist determine the highlighting technique to be used.

The worst kind of highlights are those that are evenly dispersed from the front to back. Highlights should complement your facial features, with the heaviest highlights around your face. This is why we only trust skilled stylists with our hair! Of the many salons we’ve seen, We find that Japanese salons such as Branche Hair Salon and AVENTA Hair Salon are particularly good with natural yet chic type of highlights!

7. What factors affect how my hair takes colour?

Your hair’s health and its texture determine how your chosen colour will turn out after the process. Healthy hair holds on to colour best. If you have dry or damaged hair, colours might fade quickly. Finer hair lightens faster and generally requires more gentle (semi-permanent) agents, while coarser hair is more colour-resistant but can handle potent chemicals. A skilled stylist can make adjustments to accommodate your hair type by leaving the colour on longer or washing it out sooner; such judgment calls are harder to make at home. The chemicals needed to perform complicated hair colour changes can also severely damage hair and scalp alike if not used correctly. Another reason why we choose to visit a good salon with professional stylists when we want a colour update!  Some medications and other drugs may also affect hair’s receptivity to dye. The most common culprits could be thyroid medications, chemotherapy, and some types of hormonal medications. Always alert your stylist if you have such concerns. Finally, your hair history makes a difference! Jesly from Picasso Hair Studio reminds us that it is important to notify the stylist if you have done Henna Hair Colour or Herbal Hair Colour before. In many cases, Henna or herbal colours coat the hair shaft, making it difficult for chemical hair colours to penetrate, causing the hair colour to have a greenish tone… definitely not something you would want to risk!

8. To cover my growing grey hair, should I choose only dark brown or black hair colours?

Xavier from Vast Hair Salon reassures us that that is definitely not the case! In fact, he might recommend lighter hair colours as lighter hair colours will have less contrast with the newly grown grey hair, making it less obvious! Just because your hair has turned white doesn’t mean that the hair cannot be coloured. In fact, full coverage can be done even for grey hair up to Level 9 depth of hair colour! Therefore, don’t let your grey hair restrict your colour choices!

9. How should I prepare my hair for colouring?

If your hair is damaged, pre-treating your hair is a great idea. The best way to keep your hair in good shape is to make sure it’s as healthy as possible before you go under the dye. Do a few deep-conditioning treatments at home the week before you colour your hair and lay off the hot tools. You can also schedule an appointment for conditioning treatment which will not only get your hair ready for colouring, but will also help get you familiar with the salon environment and give you the opportunity to discuss options with your stylist.

Skip shampooing the day you dye your hair. Allow the natural oils in your hair to protect your scalp from the irritation that can be caused by the ammonia in many dyes. Dirty hair is also easier to separate and portion, ensuring more even colour application.

If you have greasy hair or can’t stand the thought of not washing your hair for a day, consider wearing a cap to look fashionable while hiding your dirty hair!

10. Can I cut my hair before colouring, or must I do it after?

This is completely up to the stylist and depends on the level of change you are making. If you’re going for a drastic change and getting a short hairdo along with a new colour, cut your hair first.

5. Haircut

11. What if I hate the colour after the process? What can I do?

If you know you’re not happy while you’re still in the salon, say so! A professional stylist can usually remedy the problem with ease. Sometimes, you can take it to another shade with a toner, or maybe add a few highlights or lowlights. If you realise you don’t like the colour after you get home, call the salon and speak to the manager. A reputable salon will invite you back to fix it. In fact, we expect all Beauty Undercover Trusted Hair Salons to provide a complimentary hair colour if the outcome of the hair colour did not come out as previously agreed! Whatever you do, don’t try to correct the colour yourself. You run the risk of making matters worse, since the product you use may react with the chemicals already in your hair. Of course, it is also important to be realistic. If you requested for a drastic colour change and end up hating it, you may need to give the salon time (possibly weeks) to gradually adjust your hair colour back to a shade that you’re satisfied with.

12. How do I maintain the colour after I leave the salon?

According to Picasso Hair Studio, hair color fades due to oxidation from Oxygen, Sun and humidity. It therefore matters what shampoo and conditioner you use after you’ve coloured or highlighted your hair! Use a specialised colour shampoo and conditioner with sunscreen / anti-humidity protection or just an anti-fade ingredient to protect the colour and prevent oxidation. Shampoos and conditioners formulated for specific colours— even those from grocery-aisle brands — are a better choice than sulfate-heavy products.

Platinum blonde and red hair however require even more maintenance; Platinum blonde is not only damaging, and you’ll have to be prepared to touch up your roots all the time! Red isn’t nearly as damaging, but it takes a lot more work to keep the colour looking fresh.

Often, hair gets a little damaged when applying colour, even if you’re going back to your natural shade. Both permanent and semi-permanent dyes contain hydrogen peroxide, which chemically changes the colour of your hair pigment. Apply an at-home hair mask at least once a week to moisturise dry hair and restore shine.

Treatments also help repair damaged hair and fortify strands so they resist further breakage. I have personally tried Brazilian Blowout and various hair treatments from 99 Percent Hair Studio and I must say they do wonders even for highly damaged hair!

(Left) Hair after washing out the dye.

(Right) Hair after the Brazilian Blowout

So if you are a hair colour addict like me, don’t give up hope even if your hair gets really damaged like mine did!

13. How do I keep my hair colour from fading?

Our trick: Don’t shampoo for at least a day after colouring. After that, wash only every two to three days. Stick to shampoos and conditioners made for colour-treated hair as these products are designed to keep the hair shafts closed, keeping colour in. If your scalp gets greasy on days you don’t shampoo, scrub and rinse your scalp with plain water, then condition and rinse only the hair ends. Or try a dry shampoo, which absorbs scalp oils without the need for water. Both Jesly from Picasso Hair Studio and Juno from Artica Hair Studio reminds us NOT to use scalp shampoos and deep cleansing shampoos as they wash out the colour very quickly!

Shield hair from the sun with a hat or a colour-protecting styling product. Salt water and chlorine can also fade your hair colour, so create a barrier by wetting hair with fresh water, then applying conditioner. When hair is wet, it can’t absorb the chlorine or the salt water and will fade less. Keep hair healthy by minimising the damage of heat styling with a frequent conditioning treatment. Be wary of volumising products, which can open the hair’s cuticles, releasing the colour inside and causing fading. Ultimately, you can slow down the fading process, but you can’t stop it completely. Be prepared to return to the salon for touch-ups.

14. How long should I wait before I colour my hair again?

It’s generally suggested to wait at least four weeks between colouring hair. That’s the minimum interval if you care about your hair but it would actually be better to wait somewhere around six or seven weeks if you’re really scared of doing any damage. For people with stronger hair, however, five weeks should be enough.

Top 7 Things You Should NEVER Do To Your Hair

A hair appointment is always something happy to look forward to. It’s a chance to see ourselves in a different light, to look and feel as pretty as a princess for the subsequent weeks ahead.

NONE of us will willingly step into a hair salon knowing our hair would be damaged by inexperienced and sometimes incompetent stylists.

Unfortunately, mistakes do happen and some stylists are more concerned about the additional income rather than the health of your hair.

Therefore it is important that YOU understand some basic hair knowledge to protect your own hair!

This week, we have Chez Vous Hair Salon sharing with us about the TOP 7 Things You Should NEVER do to your hair! These advice are provided by their team of Associate Salon Directors (including Khim Toh, Jamie Seah, Shawn Chia, Sam Chok and Veyond Chong), many of whom have helped countless ladies fix hair that has been damaged by other salons.

Read on to find out more!

1. AVOID REBONDING (JAPANESE STRAIGHTENING / RELAXER) THE SAME SPOT MORE THAN TWICE A YEAR

Many customers have this misconception: The more you rebond your hair, the straighter it gets. That is not true!

Upon the first rebonding service, hair is weakened because disulphide bonds have already been broken (damaged), straightened and “fixated”. Once disulphide bonds are broken and straightened, it stays there (unless hair was under-processed). Do note that such bonds do not re-link or repair by itself and there are limited bonds in our hair. Hence, when one does a rebonding service on already rebonded hair, the remaining hair bonds will have to be broken again. When too many of such bonds are broken, the hair will be “fried”!

For guests with naturally curly or frizzy hair, the problem usually lies in the newly grown out roots. Thus, all you need is a root rebonding service subsequently – not an end-to-end rebonding service.

There are times when your rebonded hair ends start to look dull and dry over time (when compared to the very first rebonding service). Opt for a formaldehyde-free keratin treatment to refresh your shine, silkiness, strength and manageability.

Always remember that rebonding on already weakened (rebonded) hair is a high risk task. We have seen so many women rebonding their hair from ends-to-ends, time after time. By the time they realize that each subsequent rebonding service is less optimal than the previous, their hair has already become drier, frizzier or worst, “fried”. Till today, there are no treatments in the market that can completely remediate “fried” hair.

Of course, we have guests who want to reduce frizz without doing rebonding too frequently. Use styling products instead!

KMS California Tame Frizz

Mix KMS Free Shape Hot Flex Crème (size of a 10 cent coin) with two drops of KMS Tame Frizz Taming Crème to towel-dried hair.

This combination gives one lasting and smoothing style for even the most style-resistant hair. It also provides heat protection, resists humidity and prevents breakage. Use a hair dryer, set low to mid heat, to blow it smooth, via a downward motion. It’s simple, lightweight and long-lasting. Gone are the days when smoothing products are heavy, oily and sticky. If you are worried that the smoothing products might weigh your hair down, you can use Redken Cerafill Hair Diameter Thickening Treatment on your roots (before blow dry) to give your roots the extra lift it needs.

2. AVOID PERMING YOUR HAIR MORE THAN TWICE A YEAR

Glamorous Perm (Veyond)

The above perm by Veyond may look glamorous but might not be advisable if you’ve already permed your hair twice this year!

Another huge misconception many have is the more you perm your hair, the “bouncier” the curls. Unfortunately, when we perm the same spot, our hair tends to lose its strength and elasticity over time. Thus, many women will realize that their curls usually look less optimal than the previous perm; the curls look “lifeless”, dry and frizzy.

The reasons are similar to the above. Perming also requires bonds to be broken, weakened, reshaped and curled. Yet, there is a limit to how many times your hair bonds can be broken and reshaped.

Our advice is not to digitally perm your hair more than twice a year or consecutively perm your hair for more than 2 years. Take the opportunity to change your hairstyle and let your hair rest. Have a short-mid length bob rather than unhealthy looking “curls”. If you are a perm addict who cannot do without perming your hair, try a less damaging cold perm instead of a digital perm.

3. DO NOT PERM OR REBOND ON PRE-LIGHTENED HAIR

Almost 80% of women with “fried” hair have tried to perm or rebond their pre-lightened (bleached) hair. That is “suicidal” and the results are usually disastrous. Pre-lightened hair is usually fine, porous and weak. That’s because the pre-lightener will have to break hair bonds to lift the colour.

Even if you have let your hair rest for more than a year, if the pre-lightened portion is not completely cut away, avoid perming or rebonding your hair. You only have one bunch of hair. Why risk it?

Many women have this idea that if their hair is “fried” due to rebonding or perming, all they need is another perm or another round of rebonding service to fix it. Unfortunately, this causes more severe breakage and damage.

Fried Damaged Hair

4. AVOID USING HENNA DYES THAT CONTAIN METALLIC SALT

Henna Colour

This is every hairdresser’s nightmare! There is no such plant called “blonde henna”, “brown henna” or “black henna”! The plant henna has only one dye molecule – red-orange. In most cases, metallic salts must be added to henna to alter the colour.

Hair bleach, permanent hair colour, and permanent perm or rebonding solutions are disastrous combinations with henna that contains metallic salts. These can result in green, purple and “fried” hair when combined.

While some henna advocators have claimed that the technology has evolved and it is safe to use various “henna” colours, many salons in Singapore are still wary of henna-dyed hair. Colour correction is always a lengthy and troublesome process because henna tends to overcoat the hair surface, which makes putting in new colour pigments a difficult task.

5. AVOID USING KERATIN TREATMENTS THAT CONTAIN FORMALDEHYDE

Formaldehyde-related compounds seal your hair externally to promote manageability, shine and smoothness. However, it affects a stylist’s judgement when it comes to subsequent chemical services such as perming, rebonding and pre-lightening. In worst case scenarios, over processing may lead to “fried” hair.

Use Keratin Treatments that use glyoxylic acid technology instead of formaldehyde. It significantly reduces the risk of clouded judgement for subsequent chemical services.

6. AVOID FOCUSING ON ONLY MOISTURE-RICH HAIRCARE OR IN-SALON HAIR TREATMENT

Protein rich treatments are just as important as moisture rich treatments. These treatments promote strength and elasticity from within. This is critical for guests who have aging hair or who have undergone several chemical hair services in a year. Unlike moisture rich treatments, protein rich treatments are less visible to the eye and touch (in terms of smoothness, softness and shine). Nevertheless, they are truly critical in building up your hair strength and prevent your hair from being “fried”.

Redken Extreme CATGoldwell Deep Smoothing Mask

Consider using homecare products such as Redken Extreme CAT or Goldwell Kerasilk Deep Smoothing Mask twice a week. Of course, if you are in the mood to splurge, try Chez Vous’ Feed & Fit Hair Treats ($155 & Up)! The secret bond multiplying ingredient used in the Feed & Fit Hair Treats restores hair strength internally by linking back certain amount of broken disulphide bonds, preventing breakage.

In recent years, silver-grey hair, ombre, balayage, panel highlights, balaombre and ecaille are trending and there are no signs of them stopping. These colours will require some form of pre-lightening. Do yourself a favour and undergo a protein-rich pre-treatment before pre-lightening. Alternatively, add a conditioning shot into the pre-lightener. This way you can prep your hair and reduce the damage caused by pre-lightening. Think of these strengthening treatments as insurance for your hair to prevent breakage.

7. NEVER USE HIGH HEAT STYLING WITHOUT A HEAT PROTECTANT SERUM

Use serums that are targeted for heat styling. Unfortunately, not all argan oil or serum products protect your hair from heat. Using high heat styling without a heat protectant is very damaging to one’s hair.

Many customers will ask if heat protectants really work. To keep it simple, here’s some generalisations to explain how heat protectants work.

Heat protectants are products that usually contain some form of silicones such as cyclomethicone and dimethicone (FDA approved and safe on skin and hair) along with other moisturizing agents. They cover the hair with a thin, waterproof, heat-resistant coating. They mainly serve four purposes:

  1. Reduce direct heat impact.
  2. Temporarily reduce the porosity of the hair to reduce contact with water content in the air (humidity). This will reduce humidity-related frizz. Porous hair soaks up excess water in the air, which swells the hair causing cuticles to break and resulting in frizz (which is why you should never wet your hair as an attempt to “remove” frizz).
  3. Reduce moisture loss from within due to heat-styling.
  4. Lubricate hair so that it feels smoother and detangle easier. This reduces friction when styling and in turn prevents damage.

Best Facials in Singapore: Top Facial Salons that Beauty Undercover Recommends in 2015!

$

There are SO MANY horror stories surrounding facials. Whether it is hardselling facial therapists who care more about earning your money than protecting your skin or beautiful faces ruined by inexperienced and unhygienic therapists like what poor Bun Bun experienced a few years ago, the many negative experiences about facials have made many people, including myself, wary about facials.

Read Bun Bun’s experience here: http://www.bunbunmakeuptips.com/my-horrific-post-facial-experience-you-need-to-read-this/

Just like Bun Bun and many other people, I’ve had some bad experiences in the past when I was still a teenager. Instead of helping my acne condition get better, the aggressive extraction by my-then-facial therapist left many acne scars that made me regret entering the neighbourhood salon in the first place.

I was therefore always very hesitant to try out new salons… until I came across facial salons which have completely changed my impression of salons altogether.

These salons are not always cheap but I love how sincere and knowledgeable therapists at these salons are. On top of their great no-hardselling service, many of these salons have also helped me and other customers improve our skin concerns considerably. Although I would prefer to keep them as my own best kept secret at times, I believe these great salons deserve a shout-out!

I also hope that this article will also come in useful for those of you frustrated about your skincare problems. Don’t let some black sheep in the industry spoil your chances to achieve the best complexion you can attain!

Read on to see which salons we believe are the best facial salons in Singapore!

1. NUA Singapore @ Tanjong Pagar

  • Price: >$85
  • Best known for NUA Signature Customized Facial, Dermatologica products, Depilar Hair Removal
NUA Singapore

Even though NUA Singapore is smaller and less luxurious than many of the other facial salons, it is still by far our favourite. Concerned more about quality of service rendered than sales, Shiori would rather keep the salon small and maintain the high level of standard rather than grow too fast with less experienced and knowledgeable facial therapists. She and her staff are therefore among the most knowledgeable and experienced facial therapists I’ve seen who use solid scientific approach to help customers alleviate their skin problems! She is also generous in using a plethora of devices such as radiofrequency and ultrasound to enhance the effectiveness of the facial. Although prices are slightly higher than usual, the effectiveness particularly for acne-prone and anti-aging skin makes the facial really worth it. However, they are getting more and more busy so it is probably not a good option to make an appointment at the last minute.

  • Best known for thorough (often painful) extractions, award-winning facial treatments, good service
Porcelain Face Spa

A local name that dominates facial awards in Singapore beauty magazines, Porcelain Face Spa is one of the facial salons that lives up to its hype. Customers report that although extractions from Porcelain can be rather painful, the red marks disappear soon after and the face condition improves significantly. They have also been introducing new forms of technology such as LED for its customers. Overall, a great facial salon to try, particularly if the often high price tag is not an issue!

Are you thinking of going lighter (or darker) in the coming months to give yourself a new look before the year is over? Don’t book your hair appointment without checking out our guide to the hottest hair colours this season!

1. “Split Dye” or “Half and Half”

The look, which is also known as ‘half and half’ or ‘split-dyed’, is achieved by dividing your hair down the middle, and carefully colouring each side in a different colour.

This new style is popularized by Singer Melanie Martinez as well as many youtubers and instagrammers who dare to flaunt this new style.

Half and half

The only salon we’ve spotted that has experimented with Split dye thus far in Singapore is Picasso Hair Studio !

Depending on how obvious you want it to be, you can choose different colours or incorporate it within your curls to make it a look that is uniquely yours.

2. Pixelated Hair Colours

If Split-Dye isn’t quirky enough for you, pixelated hair colours might just do the trick!

Pioneered by hair colourists Jose Luis Almendral, Marco Antonio Restrepo, and Jorge Cancer, pixelated colours involves getting computer-like pixels “printed” on your hair.

Pixelated Hair Colour

Fortunately for us, we don’t have to travel all the way to Madrid to get this style.

Although a very challenging technique, we’ve found two salons offering it!

We first saw it done by Xavier from Vast Hair Salon earlier this year.

And later on in the year, Picasso Hair Studio was also featured on Straits Times for this revolutionary hairstyle!

3. Granny Hair Colour

Other than the eye-catching pixels and split dyes, granny hair colours have also been making the fashion headlines in 2015.

Yes.. GRANNY hair colours. Thanks to the #GrannyHair trend on Instagram and Game of Thrones where Khaleesi Daenaerys Targaryen looks so gorgeous with her glorious grey hair, a growing number of ladies are colouring their hair in all sorts of stunning silver shades and redefining what it means to “go grey”!

It takes lots of confidence to pull off this style but it seems like Singapore ladies and men have started to embrace this trend as well.

We first saw its emergence at 99 Percent Hair Studio where ladies and men alike have begun asking their stylists for this daring hair colour.

Jaron from 99 Percent Hair Studio shared that this hairstyle is best suited for people with cool and fair complexions and brings out vibrant coloured contact lenses really well!

You can go full grey like what we see at Vast Hair Salon.

Or you can temper the colour a little with ombre and balayage styles to bring out the natural vibrant silver.

With a little styling, the smokey grey hair colour can really add to the overall elegant feel.

Of course, this trend is not just for the girls… Younger men can consider going for the ash grey hair colour for a more matured yet chic overall look!

4. Merman Blue

Curvaceous bikini girls with blue hair and body may be the first thing that comes to our minds when we think about mermaids.

But with men adding vibrant blue hues to their locks, you may just have to  change that impression of yours.

Juno from Artica Hair Studio mentioned that he has seen a rise in men requesting to add vibrant blue hair colours to their pompadours or mohawks in this new trend called “Merman Hair“!

It may sound a little ridiculous to some but the colour actually turns out quite well for many of the male customers!

Of course, the more daring ones may even choose to add a pink… just for the heck of it!

5. Mermaid Blue

If we have mermans, then we definitely must have mermaids.

While the blue hair colour looks good on the guys, we would argue that there seems to be slightly more variation in the application of blue for the ladies.

You can go for full blue as usual or you can add it in streaks of blue in different shades to bring out the Ocean Blue, like the hairstyles we see from CLEO Hair & Make.

Of course, you can also ask your stylist to add in Turquoise, purple or green streaks for a more wholesome Ocean blend like what we saw at 99 Percent Hair Studio.

If a full head of vibrant blues is not to your liking, you can request for the stylist to add the blue streaks more sparingly towards the inner part of your hair.

Here are some examples from COVO Japanese Hair Salon!

Stylists from Plan B by Vast Hair Salon have also come up with a similar style at the inner parts of your hair.

Let your hair down and you’ll look professional enough for work. Tie it up and you are ready to PARTYYYY!

If you are not keen to bleach that much of your hair, you can consider just having a shade of turquoise/blue near your fringe!

For a more obvious and yet more understated look without bleaching too much of your hair, the Blue Ombres at Artica Hair Studio may be more suitable for you!

6. Seapunk Green

Green has been around for a couple of years but we’re seeing a resurgence in these couple of months with a combination of balayage and ombre.

Not many can pull off the brilliant green and yellow combination by CLEO Hair & Make but it is sure to be the talk of the town if you dare to sport it!

Green and Yellow Highlights (Ryo)

For most of us though, a Green Balayage  like the one by Danson from 99 Percent Hair Studio may just be sufficiently vibrant for us.

Green Balayage (Danson)

Many of the greens above however, requires quite a bit of bleaching.

If you are not keen to damage your hair, we would highly recommend you to go to Artica Hair Studio for the No-bleaching Ash Green Hair Colour!

Apple from Matsui Hair Studio also does a wonderful gradation green hair colour without bleaching!

7. Ash Hair Colour

Ash Hair Colours may seem too 2014 but is still the preferred choice for many Singaporeans! Other than looking professional for work, ash hair colour gives off a healthy glow and best of all, may not need bleaching to achieve the intended colour!

It however may need retouching if your brown roots grow out. We are therefore appreciative of the Free Retouching within 2 months that AVENTA Hair Salon offers for customers who go for their 3D Hair Colour!

8. Ecaille / Tortoiseshell / Sunkissed Highlights

Different salons call it by different names: Ecaille, Tortoiseshell, Sunkissed Highlights, 3D Colour, Refined Hair Colour but essentially it is technique that pairs your natural hair colour with golden highlights and lots of shine. It tends to be darker at the roots and lighter at the ends and makes the wearer looks a lot more sophisticated than the usual vibrant hair colour!

Branche Hair Salon, one of Singapore’s newest Japanese luxury hair salon, calls this their Refined Hair Colour. Instead of using only 10-20 foils like other salons, they use 30-60 foils of different colour shades to achieve a consistent gradation of gold.

For superb sunkissed highlights, Izumi is one of our top go-to stylist. On top of being the best haircut specialists we’ve seen, Izumi’s sunkissed highlights look natural and beautiful especially under the hot afternoon sun in Singapore!

Clover Hair Boutique is another one of our favourites for the Tortoiseshell highlights. Shirley is our most recommended technician for the job due to her many years of experience!

8 Things You Should Know Before Getting Hair Extensions

There’s something immensely entertaining about celebrity hair. One minute, a celebrity is photographed at the Oscars with a signature pixie cut. Two weeks later, she suddenly has a bob. The next moment, you start seeing pictures of the same celebrity with long, flowing locks.

Thanks to hair extensions, you don’t have to be genetically blessed to have long luscious locks. Rather than sit back and wait for your hair to grow, you can make like an A-lister and cheat your way to long strands.

But getting hair extensions can often be a confusing process. Where do we even begin?

Before you rush to get your hair extensions, we share a few bits of info with you in our quick guide to hair extensions!

1. There are different types of hair extensions — Do your research!

As wonderfully simple as it may sound, it is not recommended for you to just go to the salon and declare that you want a full head of hair. Do a little research and know what type of extensions you’ll be adding to get the best results!

Finding the right extension method will depend on your budget, preference, and hair type. New methods of installing extensions crop up practically each month, but fusion, tape-in, woven-in, and clip-in hair extensions are the most popular options for ladies looking to lengthen their locks or pump up the volume.

Important note: There’s a risk of damage with every kind of semi-permanent extension method, which makes sense when you think about the fact that you’re gluing, taping, and sewing things in place. However with proper maintenance, the methods below can be used relatively safely.

If you have wavy, medium-textured hair: Fusion hair extensions

In this process, several strands of hair are bonded together at the tip with keratin glue, then fused to your natural hair with a heating wand. This method best suits naturally thicker types, since the beads of glue that bond strands may show through fine hair. If you’re properly maintaining your extensions at home, they should last up to four months.

By the way, that’s the type of hair extensions Qiu Qiu got from CLEO Hair & Make!

Fusion hair extensions like this is less harmful to the hair because it is attached with Keratin glue. Therefore, it melts over many washes, making it easy to remove.

If you have straight, fine hair: Tape-in hair extensions.

This is a technique where the extensions are secured to natural hair with transparent, double-sided polyurethane tape. The tape is applied directly to the scalp and surrounds strands so there are no bumps to brush through so it lies flat on your hair and can look really natural if your hair is not that short. However, the tape can pull so some people may experience that the extensions pull your hair out quite a bit. The adhesive in the tape also tend to get looser each time you wash your hair.

On average, these will last anywhere from one to three months, depending on how quickly your hair grows.

tape in extensions

If you have thick, coarse, or curly hair: Woven-in hair extensions.

In this process, the underside of your natural hair is braided in tiny rows, then the wefts are sewn in with thread. Think of the braids as an anchor for the wefts to latch onto. But beware: This particular type of extension tends to be thicker and heavier, so they can pull on the scalp! Some may feel that it weighs down on your head so you may get a headache for the first couple of days. The braids may also make the hair feel kind of bumpy.

These can last anywhere from four to ten weeks and if we’re not wrong, this is the type of hair extension that Milly’s use!

Woven Hair extensoins

If you’re feeling hesitant: Clip-ins.

It may seem a little bit odd at first, but this increasingly popular option allows you to switch up your look without emptying out your wallet. In fact, with proper care, clip-in extensions can last years. Don’t leave them crumpled when you take them out because they tend to get tangled. Instead, attach them to a pants hanger once you’ve unclipped them to dry or style them. They are also great because you can remove them on days you want your natural hair back!

Clip in Hair extensions

2. Human or synthetic hair extensions?

When it comes to purchasing hair, you get what you pay for. Price will vary greatly based on quality of the hair, as well as the desired quantity (for thickness) and length. Virgin (never-before-processed) Remy human hair is the highest quality. Synthetic hair is much cheaper and available in a range of shades, providing a cheaper alternative to human hair. However, you essentially get what you pay for. Technology is continually improving the quality of synthetic hair, but it still has yet to come close to looking and feeling like real hair, so getting it to blend in with your natural hair can be an issue.

That is why Yohei from Rubik Hair Salon took the effort to source for the highest quality Virgin Remy Hair Extensions he could find in Japan! Although pricier than your usual Milly’s, the hair extensions look and feel exactly like genuine hair (duh… because they are!) and may even feel healthier than the hair you have on you! They are after all harvested from human hair donors from Mongolia who hasn’t yet done any chemical treatments on their hair!

Before investing major dollars in your brand-new hair, make sure that both texture and colour match what’s already on your head. The best way to match texture and colour is to hold a hair sample directly against your actual hair. Don’t just look for the right shade, but also the feeling! Textures of extensions can vary greatly, depending on which country they come from. Hair is primarily European, Chinese, or Indian, but there are plenty of other options available.

CLEO Hair & Make also provides Blonde Hair Extensions (made from Real Blonde Hair!) so for Caucasian customers or those who have previously bleached their hair, these hair extensions can be a great alternative!

3. Not every stylist has experience with this, and it’s IMPORTANT to find one who does!

Before getting hair extensions at a salon, always check and see if the stylist has professional experience in hair extensions. Extensions need to be done properly to minimise damage to your own hair AND look good!

Failed Hair Extensions

After all, you do not want to waste your money on hair extensions that eventually make you look less than glamorous!

Therefore, go to a pro who really knows how to do extensions and better yet, a hair professional who will design your overall hairstyle with the hair extensions in mind. This is not something we would recommend you to get done at the local nail salon.

We would also recommend that you go back to your stylist for maintenance at least once a month. This way, your stylist can make sure that the extensions are on properly, and if one is pulling at the hair, they’ll remove it and reapply it the proper way. They can also rotate the areas that they put the hair extensions on so it’s not the same group of hairs under stress every time.

4. Thinking of getting a keratin or smoothing treatment? Do it before you get your extensions.

What’s really cool about getting natural hair extensions is that you can style your hair with just about any product. You can even colour, straighten, and curl the extension! However, there is an important exception. If you’re going to get a hair smoothing treatment, make sure you get it done three to four weeks prior to your extensions. We’ve been told that if you do it after getting extensions, your hair will be so soft that the extensions could slip off.

5. Get your hair cut after your extensions are placed.

This is an important step in making sure your locks look as natural and pretty as possible! Good extensions should be entirely undetectable — blending your natural hair with the extension is critical. After the extensions are in, your hair should be cut dry, with layers that blend the two hair types. You can colour extensions darker (no bleaching!), but it’s best to choose a shade close to your natural colour to avoid over-processing. You can also mix and match various shades for a more natural-looking blend. As for at-home styling, good extensions should allow you to wash and wear.

6. Check with the salon for the application process before proceeding!

Different salons may have different ways of applying the hair extensions so it may be wise to check with them before proceeding!

CLEO Hair & Make, for example, carries non-coloured blonde hair extensions which cost $20/weft. After a consultation with the stylists, you can decide which colour you want the extensions to be. They will then colour the hair extensions over the next few days and invite you for a second visit to attach the extensions!

Fringe Cut and Purple Extensions (Ryo)

Rubik Hair Salon, on the other hand, carries pre-coloured hair extensions. So you are likely to get in and out of the salon within an hour if you are getting only a few wefts of coloured extensions! Rubik is in fact having a promotion for Haircut and 8 hair extensions for $200. Therefore, this may be a worthwhile chance to try hair extensions if its your first time!

Cut and Remy human hair extensions

7. At-home maintenance is important

This is key! Extension hair should be cared for just like your natural hair: gently. Dry hair completely with your fingers before using a brush to style. Use a wide-toothed comb to tame any tangles, and avoid tugging or yanking at the extensions when you come across a knot. Instead, hold hair at the root and begin detangling starting at the ends. Shampoo and condition with moisturising products designed for dry hair. After a wash, skip the hot tools as the overuse of curling irons and flat irons can shorten the shelf-life of your extensions.

You can use all of your favorite hair products, but keep oils away from the roots in order to prevent the extensions from slipping. At bedtime, put your hair in a loose braid so it doesn’t get matted or tangled while you sleep.

8. Check for damage control

The weight of extensions can put additional stress on the roots, so it’s important to match hair density to avoid unnecessary tension on your own hair. Extensions should be placed where hair is strongest, avoiding areas along the hairline or the back of the neck, where hair is the most fragile. Ensure that your extensions haven’t met their expiration date by visiting the salon at least once a month. There, your stylist can assess the condition of your hair, give you a wash and blow-dry, and perform a basic touch-up.

If extensions feel loose or your hair has grown out, it’s most likely time for a new set. But, as with anything else in beauty world, don’t overdo it! Our scalps need time to breathe. You want to keep your natural hair healthy so that someday, your natural hair can grow just as long.

You may really have liked the salon, the package may be really cheap or perhaps the salon has so much hardselling, you eventually sign up a package that may be worth hundreds or thousands of dollars.

You continue to go there regularly for salon treatments until one day, the unimaginable happened.

Closed salon

You cannot get through the phone. The shop itself is closed…

And you still have hundreds and thousands of dollars left in your unused salon treatments!

It is a TOTAL nightmare!

What CAN you do in the circumstances?

To help you navigate through this difficult time, we contacted CASE and Small Claims Tribunal to see what you CAN do.

1. Consumer Association of Singapore (CASE)

From what we understand, CASE is probably not the right place to help you in this circumstance.

CASE or the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation that helps to promote fair and ethical trade practices.

While CASE can help to mediate Consumer-to- Business disputes when unethical sales practices are implemented e.g. hardselling, misleading sales claims, unfair sales practices and defective goods, helping customers affected by the closing of a salon does not appear to be within their scope.

When we contacted CASE about a specific case of a salon closing down, they referred us to the Small Claims Tribunal.

2. Small Claims Tribunal

The Small Claims Tribunals (Tribunals) are part of the State Courts of Singapore. They have the jurisdiction and legislative power to ensure that such claims are being addressed through extensive mediation and finally, a court hearing if mediation fails.

However, they are subjected to quite a few constraints so do check them out to see if your claim fulfills their requirements.

2A. Check if the company is still operating

The Small Claims Tribunal only has jurisdiction if and ONLY IF the company is still LIVE and operating.

Therefore, you have to check if the company is still operating to see if you can go ahead with a claim with The Small Claims Tribunal.

How do you check if the company is still in operation?

1. Go to http://www.bizfile.gov.sg

2. Search for the status of the entity by entering the various possible names

Bizfile

3. You will have to login to Singpass to access the page.

Singpass

4. Check Company Status

status

5. If the Company is live, you can go ahead to purchase their business profile.

This is essential later when filing your claim!

  • To purchase, click on the Registration no. It will bring you to this page.

biz Profile

  • Click on Business Profile under Electronically Available Information.

Business Profile 2

  • Enter the entity name.
  • Select the profiles you are looking for.
  • Add to Cart at the bottom.
  • When you are ready, click Checkout on the top left hand corner of the screen.

business profile 3

  • Continue with the transaction and ACRA will email you the Business Profile within 30 minutes.

2B. Does your claim fulfill the other conditions?

The Small Claims Tribunal also has a very clear jurisdiction.

These are the other conditions your claim has to fulfill:

  • The cause of action happened within a year
  • The claim is not more than $20,000
  • If your claim is more than $10,000 but less than $20,000, you will need to contact the other party to sign a Memorandum of Consent (which will probably be very difficult if the salon is uncontactable)

Check the full Small Claims Tribunal checklist here to see if you are eligible.

It is best to file the claim AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to ensure that the company is still live and that the one year deadline has not passed.

2C. Download the Forms

Assuming that your claim passes all the above tests, you can download the appropriate forms here: https://www.statecourts.gov.sg/SmallClaims/Pages/Forms.aspx

The forms you may need are:

1) Claim Form: PDF, Microsoft Word

2) Memorandum of Consent (if your claim exceeds $10,000 but less than $20,000): PDF, Microsoft Word

2D. Fill in the forms

The Small Claims Tribunal has also kindly provided guides to help you fill in the forms.

2E. File the Claim at Small Claims Tribunal

Don’t rush to the Small Claims Tribunal immediately.

Ensure you bring all the required documents before you go down!

  1. A properly completed, legible and signed original Claim Form
  2. 3 photocopies of the said original Claim Form
  3. 1 photocopy each of any other supporting document .e.g receipts from the salon!
  4. An original copy of the latest Instant Information search [Business Profile] of the Respondent, if the Respondent is a business concern, obtained no earlier than 1 month from the date of filing of the Claim (this is the business profile we asked you to obtain in Section 2A)
  5. A photocopy of the identification document of you as the Claimant, or if you are filing on behalf of the Claimant, then additionally a photocopy of your identification document; (Essentially, a photocopy of your NRIC)

Note that the Small Claims Tribunal imposes a small administrative charge to take care of your claim depending on how much your claim is.

  • Not exceeding $5,000: $10.00
  • $5,000-$10,000: $50.00
  • $10,000-$20,000: 1% of Claim amount

This charge can be paid in cash, NETS or by Cheque. (No Credit Card!)

Do also note the operating hours for filing if you are planning to go down:

Mondays to Thursdays* : 9.00am to 5.00 pm
Fridays*: 9.00am to 4.30 pm
Saturdays*: 9.00am to 12.00pm

2F. Other Things to Note about the Small Claims Tribunal

These are the other things you should consider before starting a small claim:

  • Is the other party in a financial position to pay the sum you are claiming? This should be your first check before lodging any claim, as the other party may not be able to pay you or may not have any assets of value for you to seize should you obtain an Order of Tribunal in your favour but the other party does not pay. You may wish to note that expenses would be incurred in lodging the claim and enforcing an Order of Tribunal.
  • Are you aware that you cannot have legal representation at the Tribunals? At the Tribunals, you cannot be represented by an advocate or solicitor, or an agent (paid or otherwise). You therefore bear the responsibility of conducting and preparing your case. The officers of the Tribunals cannot prepare documents for you, or ensure that you do not do anything which is contrary to your own interests. The officers of the Tribunals examine documents only to ensure that the documents satisfy relevant procedural requirements, and not to verify the information provided in the documents. They cannot advise you on the validity of your claim or the likelihood of success of your claim or whether you should proceed on a particular course of action.
  • Are you aware that even if you obtain a decision in your favour for payment of money, you may have to take up enforcement proceedings if the other party does not pay? Where an Order of Tribunal is granted in your favour but the other party does not pay, you may have to start separate enforcement proceedings against him or her. The State Courts, Tribunals and the Bailiffs Section cannot act on your behalf to commence such proceedings as they must remain impartial at all times in the discharge of their legal functions and duties. The usual enforcement method adopted by most litigants is the issue of a Writ of Seizure and Sale. For queries on the filing of the Writ of Seizure and Sale please make your queries at the Bailiffs Section. If you are uncertain as to the appropriate enforcement method in law that should adopt, you may wish to seek independent legal advice.
  • Are you aware that in spite of enforcement proceedings, you may not be able to recover any money? Your decision to commence enforcement proceedings should consider whether the other party has any valuable assets to be seized to satisfy the sum ordered to be paid. If after issuing a Writ of Seizure and Sale, it is found that the other party has no assets to be seized, you would not be able to recover any money and also stand to lose your execution costs. It is therefore prudent for you to check from the start whether the other party is financially able to pay the sum you claim before lodging the claim, and whether the other party has any assets of sufficient value to be seized should you need to enforce the Order.

3. Approach a Lawyer

In the unfortunate event that the company is terminated, even the Small Claims tribunal would not have the jurisdiction to help you mediate or resolve the claim.

In that situation, you would have to consult a lawyer to sue the company under civil proceedings.

We are however not sure if the time, effort and money will be worth it.

From what we see on Legal Help, a free legal forum, you are unlikely to recover anything especially if the company became bankrupt since their assets have exceeded liabilities… even if you had a case against them.

If you want to pursue further, it might be worthwhile to contact the Community Legal Clinic where you will be able to see a lawyer on a one-to-one basis for 20 minutes free.

Find out more about your nearest Community Legal Clinic here: http://probono.lawsociety.org.sg/Help-for-Public/personal-legal-issue/CommunityLegalClinic/

Are you really ready to perm your hair? 10 Tips to Prepare Your Hair for an Amazing Perm

Song Ji Hyo Perm

Yes, we know!

Those luscious Korean curls look so darn irresistible and you are thinking of getting a perm. Before you book yourself an appointment, here are a few tips you need to know to get the best results!

We asked the experts from Picasso Hair Studio, Koinonia Hair Salon and Act Point Salon to give us their advice!

1. DO NOT BLEACH YOUR HAIR

Did you know perming bleached or pre-lightened hair will result in frizzy looking curls that will lack bounce and straighten very quickly?

To ensure the best possible results for her customers, Jesly from Picasso Hair Studio insists on not perming customers’ hair until the bleached portion can be entirely cut off.

It is not always easy to tell what your previous stylist has done to your hair so you should always make it a habit to ask!

3C Hair Colour Dream Romance (Jesly)

3C Hair Colour by Picasso Hair Studio

Vibrant colours like these pink and blue colours often require bleaching!

For those intending to perm your hair in the near future, you’ll probably have to avoid these styles and make sure to inform your stylist not to bleach or pre-lighten your hair for at least 6 months before the perm!

2. DO NOT LAYER OR THIN YOUR HAIR TOO MUCH

If you are intending to perm your hair, keep in mind hair that has been thinned too much might lose its curls faster. More often than not, a perm needs to have a certain haircut in order to achieve the final result.

Rebonding Perm (Jesly)

The rebonding perm innovated by Picasso Hair Studio, for example, has only very few layers to create the look of a heavy bottom.

Korean Wave Perm (Carmen)

The Korean Wave Perm is a one-length perm so it may not be possible to achieve this style if you have too many layers.

Therefore, try not to layer or thin your hair too much months before your perm as this could restrict the type of perm you can eventually achieve!

Certain parts of the curls may also not look as bouncy!

3. DO NOT REBOND YOUR HAIR FOR A YEAR

Regularly straightened hair will not take curls very well. Before you know it, your perm will lose its bounce or straighten very quickly. It’s a pity to spend all that many and hours sitting in a salon for curls that won’t last long. Thus if you wish to perm your hair in the next year, stop rebonding your hair!

You should stay away even from hybrid rebonding perms like C Curve Rebonding if you want luscious bouncy curls in your hair!

C Curve Rebonding

If you really must have straightened hair before your next perm, consider looking for Shua from Koinonia Hair Salon! She has created a special type of perm technique that mimics the look of soft rebonded hair… without the damage that rebonding causes!

Henna Colour

4. DO AVOID HENNA COLOUR, HERBAL HAIR TREATMENT OR KERATIN TREATMENT

Henna Colour / Herbal Hair Treatment / Keratin Treatment might leave a coating around the hair that can affect the perm chemical process, which will result in curls that lack bounce and look lifeless.

Always inform your stylist what has been done to your hair previously, even if it was done years ago. You never know what is still left on your hair that can affect the perm!

5. DO MAINTAIN YOUR HAIR TO REDUCE DAMAGE

The healthier the hair, the longer the perm will last.

There is no way for a hair that is already dry / damaged to look healthy after a perm. Perming after all, is still a chemical process. Hence, make sure to always do treatments on a regular basis and use good homecare products to prepare your hair for the perm.

In many instances, you might need to cut off the dry / damaged hair ends for a good perm to be possible.

6. DO NOT PERM AND COLOUR YOUR HAIR THE SAME DAY

Do not make the mistake of scheduling your perm and colour appointment on the same day!

When you colour your hair right after a perm, the cuticles are not closed properly and the chemical bonds do not stabilize as well. This will result in a hair colour that is distorted and will not last long. The curls will also not turn out as bouncy as it was intended to be.

That is why you’ll not find stylists from Act Point Salon doing these two hair services on the same day!

A minimum of 1 to 2 weeks is recommended after perming to get your colour done so keep that in mind!

Digital Perm (Sophie)

During this break, remember to care for your hair by conditioning it to restore the moisture balance and reseal the cuticle layer so as to ensure your colour stays true and lasts.

7. DO GO FOR A PRE-SERVICE CONSULTATION

Even if you have not chemically treated your hair before, your hair can be damaged from UV rays or simply from having hair that is very long.

Therefore, to ensure your hair is in good condition for the perm, Koinonia Hair Salon recommends that you schedule a quick consultation with your stylist at least ONE WEEK before your actual appointment.

This will allow the stylist to assess your hair condition and recommend a suitable treatment if necessary.

8. DO YOUR RESEARCH AND BRING PHOTOS

Spotted a celebrity or a friend with curls you are lusting over? Bring along a picture of the perm you want instead of vague descriptions like “natural” or “bouncy” curls. Your idea of “loose curls” might not be the same as the other person’s. Always bring along pictures of the perm you want and be as specific and detailed as possible during the consultation with your stylist. This will save you the regret of leaving the salon disappointed.

However, each person’s hair condition and texture is different, and there are always limitations to replicating the same perm exactly. Speak to your stylist and they will let you know if your desired look is possible.

9. DO SET ASIDE  4 – 6 HOURS FOR THE PERM SERVICE

Beauty can be time-consuming at times, well, most of the time!

Set aside some time for the perm service. It usually takes close to four hours or more with treatment and cut.

Bring along a book or an entertainment device to help you kill time.

The wait may be long but the final look is definitely worth the wait.

10. DO MAINTAIN YOUR HAIR AFTER THE PERM

Ensuring your curls look just as gorgeous as the day you stepped out of the salon requires regular maintenance. Be prepared for after perm care like applying products and spending 10 – 20 minutes blow drying your hair daily.

Maintaining your perm won’t be difficult once you get the hang of it as your stylist will teach you how to blow dry the curls in the correct manner.

Be sure to listen carefully to your stylist as different types of curls require different blow drying techniques. Using the wrong technique will change the original intended shape of the curls, and the final result will not be desirable!

Blow Dry

When it comes to perming your hair, you want to get the most bang for your buck.

You want stunning curls that last and this often depends on how you have been caring for your hair before and after the perm.

Follow these do’s and don’ts and you are on your way to achieving the perfect perm!

Groomsmen

A wedding is a monumental milestone in an individual’s life. It is often one of the most photographed events in one’s life – so whether you’re the groom, or a groomsman, you have to look your most dapper self.

The type of haircut for a groom or groomsman is crucial in ensuring he looks his best.  A style that’s conservative and clean has to also complement this haircut, and should be well thought out in advance before the big day.

There are other services available to further enhance your hairstyle for the big day. But to pique your curiosity, these services will be revealed later in this article.

So keep on reading, and you’ll find out how to coax your inner dapper self out for you or your best friend’s big day!

Timing of Haircut

Don’t just plan the Bachelor’s night and forget all about how YOU look on the wedding day.

If all the wedding prep are almost done, getting a haircut should be TOP PRIORITY for you or your best friend’s big day.

You should never leave it to the last minute because it takes time for your hair to settle in to your new haircut.

So when should you get that haircut?

one week 2

According to Ken from Kenaris Hair Salon, one of our preferred stylists for men, getting your hair cut a week prior to the big day is the best way to ensure that the haircut is absolutely perfect!

Below are some styles we think could work for you or your groomsmen on the wedding day!

#1: Side Quiff with Hair Tattoo

Men's Haircut (Jonathan)

Salon: Clover Hair Boutique

Stylist: Jonathan (Assistant Manager)

Suitable for: The Bridegroom

Sharp, sleek and often hailed as one of the most iconic haircuts of all time, the quiff is perhaps one of the most suitable styles for a groom who intends on splashing out with a bold statement on his wedding day. And he most certainly will make a big splash with that hair tattoo!

#2: Classic Pompadour

Men's Haircut (Purple)

Salon: Kobayashi Hair Design @ Far East Plaza

Stylist:  Purple

Suitable for: The Bride Groom

The pompadour is a great choice for a groom who intends on using the hairstyle’s slickness to ooze sex appeal for his bride-to-be.

#3: Spiky Caesar

Men's Haircut (Ito)

Salon: The Cottage by Devonshire Selected Beauty Salons @ Somerset Devonshire Rd

Stylist: Yuki Ito

Suitable for:  Groomsmen aka 兄弟

A more casual style whilst retaining that natural charm, the Caesar is a good fit for the low maintenance groomsman who is looking for a fuss-free hairstyle. Some words of caution though:  it will not work if your hair is very textured.

#4: The Japanese Salaryman

Men's Haircut (Rie)

Salon: COVO Japanese Hair Salon @ Outram Park Keong Saik Rd & Tanjong Pagar

Stylist: Rie

Suitable for: Bride Groom and Groomsmen

The Japanese Salary cut makes waves regardless of whether you’re the groom or groomsman. This natural choice for people with wavy hair who want to avoid looking unkempt!

#5: Spiky Groomsman

Men's Haircut (Ryo)

Salon: Cleo Hair & Make @ Clark Quay The Central

Stylist: Ryo

Suitable for: Groomsmen aka 兄弟

The one hairstyle that Asian hair is well suited for is spikes. If your hair naturally sticks up anyway, don’t work against it! Spikes are always cool regardless of whether they are textured, defined, vertical or messy, but look for the strongest hold products to help you achieve this look.

#6: The Fringe

13. After Front

Salon: Kenaris Hair Salon @ Wheelock Place

Stylist: Jimmy

Suitable for: Bride Groom

Most grooms usually seek something that involves easy styling to obtain a classic look. The fringe is therefore a great option for those who dig the undone and textured look.

Now as promised, the final reveal of other services available…

Men’s Perm

Before and After Men Perm

Salon: Air Salon @ The Cathay Dhoby Ghaut

Stylist: Vin

Suitable: Bride Grooms and Groomsmen

The male perm is a relatively recent trend for men according to Agent A’s experience, and makes a great choice for a hairstyle when it comes to you or your friend’s wedding. Air Salon’s signature ultrasonic perm comes highly recommended for a wedding because it results in a more natural look while giving more character to your style through voluminous hair.

Merman Blue

Blue Hair Colour (Juno)

Salon: Artica Hair Studio @ Far East Plaza

Stylist: Juno

Suitable: Bride Grooms

If subtle is NOT what you are looking for and you are absolutely sure that vibrant blue is the way to make your wedding special, you can even consider one of our top 9 hair colour trends of the year: Merman Hair!

Chic Brown Hair Colour

Men's Haircut and Colour (Jai)

Salon: Vast Hair Salon @ Clementi Central

Stylist: Jai

Suitable: Bride Grooms and Groomsmen

For the rest of us, a fresh coat of colour is maybe what we need  to look refreshed and alert for the day… it may also be necessary if you are looking to cover those white hairs that are starting to sprout out! Just a quick tip from our stylists, dark blonde or brown is generally safe for tanned skin. But if you are fair, almost any colour would look good on you.

Dapper Cut + Highlight

#23 KENNETH

Salon: Chez Vous Hair Salon @ Takashimaya Ngee Ann City

Stylist: Thomas Teo

Suitable: Bride Grooms and Groomsmen

To make your hair stand out a little more, you can go for a dapper cut and streaks of ash brown highlights to give the hair more texture and dimension; while making it look fashionable and stylish! Note that the customer in the picture previously had his hair permed so you can also opt for that if you want more hair volume for your special day!
