Balancing Career Success with Family Commitments: Shua from Koinonia Hair Salon Speaks

Brought up in an environment that expects the best from us both at work and at home, Singapore women may sometimes find themselves struggling to balance family commitments and career success. When we focus too much on our careers, we feel bad for not being there for the family. When we focus too much on our family, we sometimes wish there would be no limitations to our career growth.

The struggle is real, but not impossible! And what better way to conclude our March Special for Singapore women than an interview with Shua, a top lady stylist in Singapore, founder of Koinonia Hair Salon and previously hair director of Toni & Guy Korea and Singapore? This powerful woman has managed to achieve career success and balance family commitments at the same time. In this interview, we look to glean some tips on how she manages to be wonderfully woman!

Thank you, Shua, for giving us your time and agreeing to do this interview with us!

Before we begin, could you give us a brief introduction of yourself?

Hi, I’m Shua, a Korean hairstylist who came over to Singapore after marrying my husband who is Singaporean. Thanks to God’s grace, I was given a lot of opportunities to learn and grow in Seoul, working together with top stylists in Toni & Guy South Korea and even getting sponsored to go for an Instructor course in Toni & Guy London. I’m glad that these experiences allowed me to be a better stylist to serve my customers previously in Seoul and now in Singapore.

How did you get into this line?

I love hairdressing. I was greatly influenced by my mother and aunty, who introduced me to hairdressing when I was still young. I worked as an apprentice at a hair salon when I was 18, then worked in Toni & Guy South Korea for a couple of years before I was selected to do the Instructor course in London.

Being a Stylist allows me to help enhance people both for their work and personal lives. I really enjoy it when I help people design a style that gives them confidence and helps them shine on their individual life “stages”.

Styling for Modelling Events (Shua)

What are some of the challenges you faced on your road to career success, and how did you overcome them?

Language was a barrier for me back when I was doing my Instructor course in Toni & Guy London as I wasn’t able to fully understand English. However, I really wanted to learn so I dared to ask questions and took initiative whenever I had an opportunity to learn more. I was blessed to be able to learn from the best hairstylists, and with my hard work and perseverance, I managed to become the project winner and obtained Distinction in my course.

I returned to Toni & Guy South Korea as an Instructor, and soon after got married with my husband and started looking into relocating to Singapore.

How different has life been for you in Singapore, and what challenges did you face here as a Stylist?

With my certification, I managed to secure a job as Instructor for Toni & Guy Singapore. I took a year off after giving birth and returned to Toni & Guy, deciding to work as a Stylist instead of Instructor because I wanted more interaction with the customers and further build up my hairdressing experience. I worked in Tony & Guy Singapore and later La Coco.

Shortly after, I got to know the owner of the now Koinonia, who wanted to sell the place. Seeing a great opportunity, my husband and I decided to invest in the place and created Koinonia, a hair salon that I’m proud to call my own.

Koinonia Hair Salon

That’s a very interesting name! How did you decide on the name Koinonia?

Koinonia means “happy gathering” in Greek. I’ve always had this name in my mind. It’s a name for my dream salon, and now it’s come true!

What are the struggles that you face as a founder of a salon and wife+mother?

I am an ambitious person. I want to be successful at work and I want to take care of my daughter. However, it takes a lot of time and emotional effort to achieve both.

After having my daughter, I often find that I don’t have much time to myself or for my husband.

Emotionally, it also takes a toll. I have to be very professional and decisive at work, but nurturing and caring when I’m at home with my daughter and husband. I get particularly stressed when the salon is very busy and my daughter really needs me.

IMG-20150324-WA0014

What are some of the rules that you live by, that you think will help many other Singapore women in their climb to both family and work success?

In my experience, the best way to achieve balance is to take the time to cultivate relationships in your life.

Pardon me for bringing this up in a secular interview but the first and foremost relationship that pulled me through the darkest times was my relationship with God. Every time I feel like giving up, He renews my energy and gives me the courage to work towards a greater purpose. That gives me tremendous inner strength to continue giving it all to both my salon and my family. Even though I feel tired at times, the ability to retreat and draw strength from Him makes everything possible.

The relationship with my husband is the second most important relationship in my life. My eternal supporter, my husband motivates me when I’m feeling down, looks after our daughter when I’m not able to be around and buys me flowers on those special days to keep our flame alive. Even though I’m not Singaporean, my husband has also rallied his family in Singapore to accept me and give me much support. I am really very thankful for my husband and for my very welcoming and supportive in laws. They take care of our daughter so well that I can focus on being a good stylist for all my customers.

Finally, there is one more relationship you should never neglect… and that is the relationship with yourself. In the busyness of things, some of us forget about ourselves and let ourselves degrade into someone we cannot feel proud about both physically and emotionally.

As a woman, I think it’s important to remember our femininity. The gentleness and beauty that makes us special. Instead of denying or neglecting that, we should remember to love ourselves for our womanly qualities and keep ourselves happy; after all, it is only when we find our inner joy can we have the motivation and perseverance to pursue our dream and do good work at work and at home.
Shua receiving flowers

What keeps you happy?

I love meeting people! I like talking to people and learning about their life experiences as it makes me feel like I’m a part of their lives.

The gift of hairdressing adds to that as I can help them look and feel better about themselves through a hair service.

Knowing that I am helping others through my work keeps me happy, no matter how tired I am.

Any additional parting advice?

Taking care of your family on top of having a packed work schedule can sometimes cloud our view and our emotions on the things and people who matter. We start to see children and husbands as responsibilities rather than the gifts they really are.

IMG-20150324-WA0016

When that happens, I think that it is wise to take some personal time for yourself… to think about what really matters and re-centre your life on those who matter to you. I always find these periods of personal time very rejuvenating as it allows me to see things from a positive perspective; to know that at the end of the day, my children, my husband, my family, my employees and my customers are all my helpers, people whom I can help and people who help me grow as a person.

Here, I just want to say my personal thanks to everyone for being a part of my life.

As Shua continues cheerily, sharing her advice and opinions on hairstyles that complement various looks and more about herself and her passion, we see what makes this lady so special; her genuine heart to help others, her drive to do the best in everything she does and her love for the people around her make her an exceptional career lady and mother.

Can a woman combine a career and family and not short-change either? With the right job fit and a supportive family network, we say “Yes!”.

For being capable professionals and dedicated wives or mothers (or both) while still staying gorgeous, Singapore women, we salute you!

Thank you Shua from Koinonia Hair Salon for being such an inspiration!

With time becoming ever more precious in our super connected world, it’s important to keep our priorities straight and make the right decisions about how we use our time.

Guys, are you sick of going to your nearest neighbourhood barber and asking for “the usual” cut? Admit it: You’re a little bored with your usual style but don’t know if it’s wise to try something too different in case it turns out weird.

Having dedicated the month of March to celebrating women, we’ve decided to be fair and dedicate the month of April to give you fellas some ideas on what haircut to get, how to deal with thinning hair and even hairstyle ideas that would appeal to us ladies!

We start off this April series with Best Haircut Ideas for Men in 2015. Hope you’ll find it useful in selecting your next cut!

#1: CLEAN DAPPER CUT

Clean Dapper Haircut by Chez Vous

SalonChez Vous Hair Salon @ Takashimaya Ngee Ann City

Stylist: Jamie Seah (Associate Salon Director)

Suitable for: Gentleman in a smart suit or the primal man in a leather biker jacket

A timeless classic, the dapper cut is a simple 2 block cut with hair 0.5cm on the side and more than 5cm on the crown. The main point is to keep the outline extremely clean and smooth for the professional look. It works particularly well for men with moderately thick hair… too thick and you might want to consider a down-perm on the sides to allow the hair to stay closer to the scalp.

It looks best styled with good pomade or gel with a slick hair back!

#2: VERSATILE TWO BLOCK CUT

 Before Styling

Men's Block Cut (Sam)

After Styling

Men's Block Cut (Sam)

SalonChez Vous Hair Salon @ Takashimaya Ngee Ann City

Stylist: Sam Chok (Associate Salon Director)

Suitable for: Men who wants to add a little more style and sexy into his lifestyle. We have definitely seen this hairstyle in idols, singers in a band

The Two Block Cut usually involved the sides and lower back being cut short and thin, while leaving the crown of the hair at varied length or texture. What’s great about the Two Block Cut is that one can be very flexible on how he want to style it. He can keep the fringe straight; down; up; or even ruffle it to create a more ‘rugged’ or ‘hipster’ look; depending on one’s mood and occasion.

Dandy or Shaggy, it’s up to you.

#3: Textured Pompadour

Textured Pompadour (Thomas)

SalonChez Vous Hair Salon @ Takashimaya Ngee Ann City

Stylist: Thomas Teo (Chief Director)

Suitable for: Fashionable urbanites who values fuss and hassle free lifestyle.

All-time classic hairstyle that was actually named after the mistress of King Louis XV, Madame de Pompadour. It remained a female dominated style right the way up until World War I. However, in 1950s, Elvis sported the pompadour as part of his signature look and the rest is history. Still considered a classic rock ‘n’ roll inspired hairstyle due to this, the traditional pompadour is styled by sweeping the hair upwards and away from the face, often worn slick with swept back sides. That said, the style has evolved quite dramatically since then, with modern takes on the pompadour experimenting with length and texture through the top while keeping the back and sides sharp and short.

#4: Businessman’s Cut

Sleek Undercut (Keida)

SalonClover Hair Boutique @ Far East Plaza

Stylist: Keida (Creative Director)

Suitable for: Working professionals who require a more conservative look

For this cut, hair is not kept very long. Instead, the hair is cut with a slight tapering on the sides and back. The top is only left long enough to part and comb to the side. Perfect for working executives looking to impress at your next interview or promotion!

#5: Angular fringe

Haircut (Ark)

SalonAir Salon @ The Cathay

Stylist: Ark

Suitable for: Men with a fuller crop (particularly for those with rounder faces)

This haircut features a taper on the sides and back of the hair but keeps the top long and cuts at an angle. It looks great on most face shapes but can especially help out guys with rounder faces – the short sides and long top give a round face more length!

#6: Japanese Medium Shag

Men's Haircut and Styling (Ryo)

SalonCLEO Hair and Make @ The Central

Stylist: Ryo

Suitable for: Men with limp hair

Layered, feathery looking, this style is typical for many Japanese men who wish to emulate the messy sexiness of celebrities the likes of Takuya Kimura and Takashi Sorimachi. Not everyone can carry off this style as the Japanese medium-length shag requires coarse hair to look more voluminous. If not, some mousse and styling wax at the hair ends can provide additional structure and accentuate individual hair strands.

#7: Short Professional Shag

Before and After Agent E

SalonKenaris Hair Salon @ Wheelock Place

Stylist: Ken

Suitable for: Men with fine hair and want to increase their hair volume!

The short professional shag uses multiple layers and feathery cuts to reduce the weight of the hair. This helps to increase the perception of hair volume while at the same time, reducing hair loss! Although slightly shaggy, this is still largely acceptable in a professional office environment and looks best with some wax at the hair ends.

#8: The Japanese Salaryman

Men's Haircut (Rie)

SalonCOVO Hair Salon @ Tanjong Pagar and Keong Saik Rd

Stylist: Rie

Suitable for: Working professionals with a slight wave in your hair!

Don’t fret if you are one of those with natural waves! Embrace it with the Japanese Salaryman cut! In this cut, the hair is cut in such a way that the waves complement the face shape rather than making you look shaggy and unkempt! The front hair and top part of the hair is kept a little long so that you can still style your hair on weekends but even the busiest among you can probably survive without even gelling your hair for work on weekdays!

#9: Fauxhawk

Mens Haircut (Yuya)

Salon: COVO Hair Salon @ Tanjong Pagar and Keong Saik Rd

Stylist: Yuya

Suitable for: Young adults looking for that extra zing in their hairstyle!

Considered to be a “poser” hairstyle in its early days, fauxhawk has come a long way with David Beckham, Ricky Martin, Adam Levine and many more prominent personalities wearing this style once in a while. It is now much more accepted even at the workplace as long as you style it properly!

#10: Fohawk Fade

Short Cut (Sio)

SalonCLEO Hair and Make @ The Central

Stylist: Sio

Suitable for: Athletic Men hoping to look like their favourite football stars

Nothing says athletics more than a fauxhawk… combine it with a fade haircut and some facial hair and you’ll look like a celebrity footballer in no time! Not a recommended cut for the low-maintenance man as you need to take time to style this hairstyle to make it look good!

#11: Mohawk with Hair Tattoo

Hair Tattoo and Hair Colour (Jaron)

Salon99 Percent Hair Studio @ Haji Lane

Stylist: Jaron

Suitable for: Men who are working outside of the office, with possible some hair loss issues coming up.

The original inspiration for the fauxhawk, the mohawk has also evolved much to the much classier style we see today. As we can see above, its a striking cut without looking over-the-top especially when coupled with a sexy stubble all over. We also love the addition of the hair tattoo, making the style uniquely yours! Of course, not every employer can accept this daring style so try it while you can!

#12: Headturning Mohawk

Mohawk (Xavier)

Salon: Vast Hair Salon @ Clementi Central

Stylist: Xavier

Suitable for: Confident, attention seeking men (preferably not in strait-laced occupations!)

Nothing attracts attention better than this headturning mohawk. In addition to this relatively long mohawk, the tramlines give the girls something more to look at.

If 2015 is the year for looking adventurous for you, this attention-seeking mohawk should definitely be in your consideration!

#13: Comb Over Fade

Men's Haircut (Danson)

Salon99 Percent Hair Studio

Stylist: Danson (Director)

Suitable for: Stylish men starting to face hair loss issues

For this hairstyles, top hairs are grown to a longer length and then combed over in a side parting or slicked back style. This is suitable for men who are facing hair loss issues as it minimizes the evidence of hair loss by spreading the hairs on the bald areas of the head. The hairs on back and side are kept short and a proper fade transition is given between the comb over hair and the shorter hairs on sides.

#14: Side Quiff with Fade

Men's Haircut and Style (Veronise)

SalonKobayashi Hair Design @ Far East Plaza

Stylist: Veronise

Suitable for: The low-maintenance man with a boyish charm

Adding a side part gives the much desired effect of an undercut without actually having to shave off too much of your precious hair. This hipster hairstyle can also be styled in various ways, from matte to shiny to messy to wavy, ideal for the man in a hurry who doesn’t want to put a lot of time and effort into making his hair look great.

#15: Caesar Fade

Men's Haircut (Sze Tho)

SalonVast Hair Salon @ Far East Plaza and Clementi

Stylist: Sze Toh (Director)

Suitable for: Rugged men with thick hair, looking for a more unique sense of style

Short on sides and long on top, the hairs on top are left longer and usually combed to the front rather than to the side. The textured cut, combined with the unique tramlines, gives off a clean yet rugged rockstar feel. To give off the intended look, strong hold gel or pomade is highly recommended.

#16: Korean inspired Cut

Men's Haircut (Yumiko)

SalonKobayashi Hair Design @ Far East Plaza

Stylist: Yumiko

Suitable for: Aspiring Korean Idols

Angular fringe combined with sideburns, the medium length hairstyle reminds us of the young and handsome Korean male idols. As the length of hair is relatively long, this hairstyle is not for everybody. To make it look good, some styling, particularly at the back, will help to volumize the entire hair. Those with coarser hair will also look better with this hairstyle.

#17: Brit Pop Crop

Men's Haircut (Juno)

Salon: Artica Hair Studio

Stylist: Juno

Suitable for: Working professionals with fine hair

This short crop is neat and easy to style, particularly for those who don’t have much time in the morning! All you need to do is to prep the damp hair with a wax, blow dry hair with your fingers and style the front hairline and rough up your hair on the crown for volume! Japan MSK hair wax or QS hair clay is recommended to boost your hairs fullness!

Tip: For extra hold, rub a tiny amount of wax onto your fingertips and work through ends.

We all love how our hair looks right after leaving the salon – perfectly styled, with each strand in just the right place. The problem is, most of us have a hard time recreating that style when we’re back at home, the day after we first got our hair done in the salon.

Here’s where the right styling product and advice step in!

We dedicated the month of March to celebrating women, and now dedicate the month of April to the fellas! Want to recreate that perfect faux hawk or pompadour that your stylist gave you at the salon? Having trouble styling your hair because it’s too fine, curly or sparse?

As part of our April series for the fellas, we speak to stylists from Plan B Salon and Art Noise Japanese Hair Salon for tips on how you can style your hair just the way you want it!

Men's Haircut and Colour (Jai)

Men’s Haircut and Colour by Jai from Vast Hair Salon

Tip #1: Get a good haircut

This sounds very much like common sense (duh!) but we’ll say it again anyway: A good haircut is the most essential step to fast and easy hairstyling!

When your hair gets too long or grows out of shape, it will take many more (painful) minutes in the morning to get your hair into your desired style. Remember to visit an experienced stylist who can advise you on the style you should go with to complement your face shape! Get a good cut, and you’ve won half the hairstyling battle!

Check out these 17 haircut ideas if you are still thinking about what to do.

Muk Pomade used by Plan B

Tip #2: Know your hair products

From pomade and gels to clay and mousse, different hairstyles and hair types require different styling products in order to look good.

Pomade is generally not recommended for fellas with low-density hair (i.e. those facing hair loss issues) as it does not give sufficient volume and weighs down the entire hair, resulting in a greasy look. A volumizing mousse is likely to do better in helping the hair increase volume.

However, pomade is great for that wet slick look, best for pompadours!

Blow Dry

Men’s Haircut by Ken from Kenaris Hair Salon

Tip #3 Towel or Blow dry your hair

Before you begin styling your hair, towel dry first! To towel-dry, pass the towel over your hair and squeeze the hair with the towel in your hand to remove excess water. Try not to rub the towel against the scalp vigorously as this damages your hair and causes frizz!

For those hoping to get some extra volume, use a hair dryer and blowdry your hair upwards for extra volume. Don’t overdry your hair as most hair products don’t work optimally on fully dried hair!

TIP: For even more volume, apply products such as the Redken Rootful before blowdry to increase hair volume at your roots! FYI, we got our bottle at Kenaris Hair Salon.

Tip #4: Apply hair product on hair ends to mid shaft and run it in both directions for a stronger hold

When applying your chosen hairstyling product, coat your fingers with the product and run your fingers through your towel-dried / blown dry hair as you style your hair.

Get most of the hair product on your hair ends to the mid-shaft (not too close to your scalp!). For those with longer hair, run your product in the direction of your desired style and then run it again in the opposite direction to create a stronger hold on the hair.

Mix hair products

Men’s Haircut and Styling by Ricky from Plan B

Tip #5: Consider mixing your styling products

Different hair products have different characteristics. Consider using different styling products for different parts of your hair!

As Ricky from Plan B demonstrates, you can use pomade for the slick overall look and then wax on the side and back for stronger hold to keep the hair down.

Tip #6: Finish off with a hair spray for a firmer hold

After styling your hair, use a hair spray and give your hair an overall spritz for longer lasting hold.

Tip #7: Check every angle before leaving the house!

Additional styling tips from Art Noise Hair Salon: It’s important to perfect your look from the front, but equally important (and often overlooked) are the other angles from which other people view you.

Avoid a flat back by using 2 mirrors to check the front and back of your hair while styling, and add a hard freeze spray to end off your look!

4 Ways to Style Your Undercut / Fade

Just got a swanky new cut from your hairdresser? Set yourself apart with the right styling and bring out your personality! As part of our April series for the fellas, we’re here to help you get four different hairstyles with your undercut!

#1: The Pompadour

This style is most likely the hottest new trend in the men’s hairstyle scene, with celebrities to businessmen sporting the look. A typical pompadour is worn with short sides, with the hair swept upwards and backwards. However, the look has become more and more versatile, with a variety of different styling methods to make it suit your face shape, lifestyle and career.

Step 1: Get a good pompadour cut at a salon with professional stylists.

IMG-20150318-WA0004

Pompadour by Xavier from Vast Hair Salon.

Step 2: Invest in a blow dryer

Blow drying your hair helps create the base shape and elevation necessary for the style. Start with towel dried hair. For more volume and hold while blow drying, apply some mousse to your hair before blow drying (about the size of a fifty cent coin and spread evenly from the root to the tip of your hair, apply more if necessary). Using a round brush, start with blow drying the sides and top of your hair straight back. Save the front of your hair for last. With the round brush, blow dry the front straight up to create elevation. Then, use the round brush to grab the front of your hair, and quarter turn the brush to fold the front back while you continue to blow dry. Remember to always blow dry the hair from the roots to the ends of the hair, as this will provide more control and shorten the blow drying process.

Step 3: Pomade

Blow drying will help create a dry pompadour, but you’ll need a good pomade to hold the style in place for the rest of the day. Start with a small amount of pomade (usually two fingertips worth) and rub it in both of your hands until the pomade is smooth. Then, apply the pomade in the same steps as when you blow dried your hair. Start with the sides, then move to the top. Again, save the front for last. By applying from the side to the front, you will be able to tell if you have insufficient pomade on your hair. Do note that the front of your hair will require the most pomade, as you will need the added strength to hold up your pompadour. If you’ve tried water based pomade and find the hold lacking , do consider an oil based Pomade for a stronger hold.

Step 4: Comb

When combing the pomade through your hair, follow the same steps that you used to put in the pomade. Start by creating a side parting clearly with your comb, combing the sides down. Then comb the top. If you have trouble running the comb through your hair, you can add a little lightweight gel to help disperse the pomade through your hair. Again, save the front for last. Comb the front straight up to create the pomp, you can also consider using a round brush which might give you more control of the pomp. With one hand holding the comb and one hand free, start from combing the front of your hair up from the side partings and into your free hand. Your free hand will act as a guide for your hair to fold over and to also serve as a limit to how high the front will go. Comb your hair up, and pat it down. Follow this step until you achieve the desired look.

Step 5: Finish with a hairspray

If you want to add even more hold throughout the day, use hairspray to solidify your pompadour. Sounds like a lot of work? The pompadour definitely needs practice and patience!

If you need some more guidance, refer to the video we’ve scouted for you below!

This is just one of the MANY ways you can style your Pompadour. Does this work well for you?

Spiky Edge / Fauxhawk

Spiky hair is one of those styles that always looks good. Spiked hair creates texture and a bold, tousled look that’s still acceptable for elegant events if styled well. Men look sporting, neat and appealing with spiky hair, yet still retain their boyish charm. Who could ask for more?

Step 1: Get a good cut at the salon that’s suitable for a spiky style.

Men's Block Cut (Sam)

Men’s Block Cut by Sam from Chez Vous Hair Salon

Step 2: Blow dry.

The extra weight of water in your hair will make it more difficult to stand up, so you want to dry your hair before spiking. However, hair is often most malleable when still a tiny bit damp, so don’t dry your hair completely! Point the blow dryer upward towards your hair to create body and texture that can help your spiked look once you add product. If you have curly or wavy hair, you may want to consider straightening your hair for better control while styling.

Step 3: Add product.

The best product depends mostly on your hair type. Rub some product in your fingers before running your fingers through your hair (avoid the fringes / bangs). This helps get an even application of the product through your hair. Choose a product with the hold you want your desired look to have – If you’re going for a messy, slept on spiked look, you don’t want to use a styling glue that can hold up an eight-inch mohawk. Try a lighter styling wax like the Gatsby Moving Rubber or pomade that will help you style without hardening into a brick. If you have fine hair, try a matte fiber paste which will give your spiked look a fuller, richer texture.

Step 4: Create spikes.

Once you have your hair product of choice distributed in your hair, it’s time to get creative! Scrunch your hair in the middle into a mohawk line. For a messy or even fauxhawk look, start by grabbing handfuls of your hair and pulling them up to spike them. Spend 10 to 15 seconds spiking your hair and using your fingers to direct it in your desired direction (e.g. toward the middle of your head for a fauxhawk look). Many stylists agree that if you spend longer than this, you’ll actually give too much order to your messy look, which can be counterproductive. For a messier spiked look, take a section of hair and apply extra-strength gel. Use one hand to separate a small section of hair from the rest, then use the other hand to apply a liberal amount of gel to the section. Grasp the hair at the roots and smooth the gel up to the tips. Hold your hand there for a moment to let it set. The smaller the section of hair you grab, the smaller your spike will be. You can create rows of even spikes or alternate between small and large ones. Pull your hair in the direction you want the spike to go. If you want it to stick straight out, pull the section of gelled hair straight from your head and twist them at the ends. If you want spikes that move toward the front of your head, pull them in that direction and hold them in place for a moment before letting go. You could also pull spikes in all different directions for a messier look.

If you need some more guidance, refer to the video we’ve scouted for you below!

This is just one of the MANY ways you can style your Spike. Does this work well for you?

Side Parting / Business Men’s Cut

Made popular by the vintage style of Downton Abbey and Mad Men, and spotted on plenty of celebrities, the classic side part hairstyle has come back into fashion. Neat, tidy, and well-groomed, side parting makes any man look instantly dapper. A side part is simple yet sophisticated, and is very easy to achieve with styling. Hair can be slicked to one side for a more controlled and disciplined style, or it can be left looser for a more casual appearance.

Step 1: A good cut.

(We can’t stress this enough!)

Men Cut and Style (Yumiko)

Men’s Haircut by Yumiko from Kobayashi Hair Design

Step 2: Get a comb, and pick the right product for your hair.

For thin or normal hair, a pomade offers both shine and pliability. For thick to medium hair, a gel may be better able to tame your tougher locks.

Step 3: Style away!

To style your side part, apply the product of your choice evenly throughout damp hair after a shower. Find your natural part by brushing your hair forward, shaking your head lightly, and noticing where the hair starts to separate. Then, comb the sides down and push the front slightly back and over to the side (or up, back, and over to the side, if you want a higher quiff). To create a more polished side part, blow dry hair in the direction you prefer, combing hair at the same time. Keep two products handy at home: 1 shiny and the other more matte. This way you can alternate between a more casual, relaxed look during the day and a shine for the evening. For a more relaxed feel once you’ve combed the hair, run your fingers through it to break it up a bit and introduce a little texture. Try mixing both products together to make a blend that suits you for any occasion.

If you need some more guidance, refer to the video we’ve scouted for you below!

The Fauxhawk

The preferred look for many sports stars, this style is often seen as “poseur” but has persevered with its popularity among fellas who wish to look sporty or rebellious.

Step 1: You guessed it… Get a good cut at the salon!

Mens Haircut (Yuya)

Step 2: Towel dry.

Step 3: Pick your product.

Any shaping cream, wax, ”firm hold gel”  should do. If you have longer hair, consider having some hairspray to help provide extra hold and keep its shape throughout the day.

Step 4: Style!

Use your index finger to scoop out some product about the size of a quarter and rub it between your palms. Run your fingers lightly through the tops of your hair to get your hair to stand. Be sure to do this to all of your hair, paying extra attention to the front to ensure it stands straight up. Comb the sides diagonally forward with your fingers to create more texture than simply combing them vertically. Push your hair on the top of your head together by making a sort of triangle with your hands. Use your fingers to comb down hairs sticking up in the back. Push the top of the fauxhawk forward slightly to create a wavelike motion and grab out of place pieces and twist them upwards to help them keep their shape. Apply a bit more product to any other places that it’s needed and you’re done!

If you need some more guidance, refer to the video we’ve scouted for you below!

This is just one of the MANY ways you can style your Fauxhawk. Does this work well for you?

Did you find this useful?

Agent RT loved his Professional Men’s Haircut at Plan B!

April 2015

It was my first time at Plan B @ Far East Plaza .

Although I have a regular hairstylist, I heard about Ricky from one of my friends. Therefore, when the opportunity for a sponsored visit came about, I was excited to try out Plan B!

Before

I love bright & spacious salons, and this salon certainly fits my bill. The huge mirror for every customer helps to broaden space and creates a new dimension here.

Plan B by Vast Hair

Whenever going to a new hair salon, however, I am always a little concerned about whether I can communicate with the stylist and if the haircut satisfies my requirements (i.e. smart & clean).

Ricky dispelled most of my concerns immediately. Once we got talking about the look I was going for, he understood immediately and recommended me to go for a sleek look: essentially sides short and hair parted sideways… perfect for a Working Professional like myself!

Initially, I was thinking of having my sides cut really short with a layered slope so that the hairstyle can last me 1.5 months to 2 months. However, Ricky shared with me that such a cut could be unbalanced for my face shape. This is the first time a stylist highlighted about how the slope affects my face shape and I was impressed. It made sense to me and I would keep it in mind the next time I go for a cut!

Hairwash

After determining the hairstyle, we started off with a hair wash which will soften my hair for the haircut. Ricky used warm water along with a citrus-smelling shampoo, massaging my scalp in the process. The massage was refreshing, stimulating blood flow and relaxing for me. As my hair was longer, he applied conditioner before rinsing my hair. He dried my hair thoroughly while supporting my head, ensuring the water don’t get into my ears.

After wash

He was very meticulous with my sides, ensuring that they would be shaped naturally. I felt confident that my hair will look much better this way.

Haircut begins

Ricky is a great conversationalist as we covered various topics, and this eliminated the awkward silence experienced during first-time cuts.

Coincidentally, we were from the same army camp but different vocations so we shared NS anecdotes about guard duty and eerie encounters. We also delved into why and how he became a hairstylist. Ricky originally wanted to be a designer but his hairstylist mom managed to convince him to join a related industry: hairdressing. He therefore took up hairstyling courses in Shanghai and continued his family tradition of being a hairstylist (yes! his grandfather and his mom were both hairstylists!)

Smiling Haircut

On why he named his salon Plan B, he actually made a wager with his friend that his first salon will be called that. Ricky also elaborated that he wants Plan B to be a salon where his customers get a satisfying haircut (for those who did not had a good haircut previously) and he will do his best to make them look good again.

RTZQ_PlanBSalon_6588

As he finished his cutting, I put on my specs to check out his handiwork and Ricky could also see if the haircut suits my everyday look. He did a final touch up by removing my baby hair around my forehead so that I get a clean cut look, something which I have not paid attention before and I will keep this in mind for my next haircut.

He even patiently showed me how to style my hair using pomade, and gave me tips on how to strengthen the hold by applying in the opposite direction of your desired styling.

RTZQ_PlanBSalon_6689

Firstly, to enhance the sleek look, I should apply wax/pomade down the slope area of my back. This was the first time I had pomade applied. Previously I didn’t realize that the slope was important but after the application of pomade, it actually helped me look better and made the overall look last all the way till I reached home!
It was non-greasy and odourless and was easily washable with shampoo.

RTZQ_PlanBSalon_6698

Overall, I felt that it was easy to connect with Ricky and this showed in the haircut (smart & clean which was what I wanted).

Styling Men's Hair

This was a fantastic first experience and I liked Ricky, his expertise and his lovely salon at the convenient Far East Plaza. I would be more than happy to visit him again & recommend him to my friends.

Having Men hair loss issues? Learn how to get your hair back with these Hair Loss tips!

Whether you call it “high forehead” or “thinning hair”, hair loss is a sensitive issue that plagues many men (and women).

As part of our April series for the fellas, we speak to Serene Tan,  Scalp Specialist and Associate Salon Director of Chez Vous Hair Salon, to find out what men can do to battle impending hair loss!

First of all, what is Hair Loss? When should you take hair loss as a serious problem?

If you’ve been noticing more hairs on your pillow or on the floor than normal, you may be right to worry about hair loss (even if you are just in your early 20s!).

It’s normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day. If you lose a lot more hair than that, you MAY have excessive hair shedding or telogen effluvium. This is most common among people who experience tremendous weight loss, stress, fever and operation. However excessive hair shedding is only temporary! It will stop after 4 months and the hair should regain normal fullness within 6-9 months. Of course, if the root cause stays with you e.g. stress, the hair shedding can last longer than that.

Hair loss is different from hair shedding

If you have hair loss, your hair will not grow until the cause stops. For example, people who undergo chemotherapy will only have their hair regrown after the treatment stops.

It is therefore important to identify the cause of your hair loss / hair shedding and try to solve it from there.

So, what are the common causes of hair loss?

1. Hypothyroidism

The thyroid regulates the body’s metabolism through the release of hormones. Hypothyroidism is an underproduction of certain hormones and is the most common cause of alopecia areata (which can affect the whole body and not just the head). Hypothyroidism itself is caused by birth abnormalities, auto-immune diseases or surgery involving the removal of the thyroid. This can cause your follicles to harden, leading to hair loss.

2. Auto-immune disease

If you have diabetes or arthritis, the body’s immune system may attack hair follicles or other cells important to hair growth and maintenance, causing hair shedding and hair loss.

3. Medication

Medications can lead to both hair shedding and hair loss.

Hair shedding is the most common form of drug-induced hair loss. It usually appears within two to four months after taking the drug. This condition causes the hair follicles to go into their resting phase (telogen) and fall out too early. People with hair shedding usually shed between 100 and 150 hairs a day.

Anagen effluvium is hair loss that occurs during the anagen phase of the hair cycle, when the hairs are actively growing. It prevents the matrix cells, which produce new hairs, from dividing normally. This type of hair loss usually occurs within a few days to weeks after taking the medication. It is most common in people who are taking chemotherapy drugs for cancer and often causes people to lose most or all of the hair on their head, as well as their eyebrows, eyelashes, and other body hairs.

The severity of drug-induced hair loss depends on the type of drug and dosage, as well as your sensitivity to that drug. It is therefore important to review any medications you take and discuss potential side effects with your doctor. When hair loss occur from a drug you’re taking, there is a good chance that the hair will grow back on its own after you stop taking the medication.

Chemo

4. Ringworm Infection

Although a number of infections can lead to hair loss, the most common infection that affects the scalp and hair is ringworm. Ringworm is caused by fungi that grow in warm, moist conditions and typically caused by poor hygiene.

Ringworm

5. Vitamin and Mineral deficiency

Whether it’s because of dieting, general malnutrition or some genetic or biological defect, deficiencies in certain nutrients can cause hair loss. Iron deficiency can lead to anemia, a condition that causes the body not to have enough red blood cells and eventually hair loss. Deficiencies in other nutrients — such as Vitamin B and protein may cause hair loss as well.

6. Stress

Severe physical stress (like surgery) or severe psychological stress (like a death in the family) can cause the body to go into shock, producing hormones that lead to hair shedding.

stress

7. Genes

Despite all the different causes, genetics is the major reason why hair loss occurs. The M-shaped male baldness especially is an indication of such a genetic cause.

Even if we are genetically disposed to hair loss, are there things we can do and lifestyle changes we can make to alleviate hair loss?

1. Get yourself checked

Instead of delving immediately into trying to resolve hair loss, it is more effective to identify the root cause of the hair loss. You can begin by eliminating some of the common causes e.g. hyperthyroidism, diabetes, infection and anemia. through a body checkup or by going to a dermatologist.

Once eliminated, you can then examine your lifestyle (stress?) to see if you can do anything about it!

2. Use hair products that encourage hair regrowth

Besides keeping a healthy lifestyle and diet and keeping your stress level under control, there are other effective products and services out in the market that can help curb or reduce your hair loss problems.

Look for these ingredients when you purchase off-the-shelf products:

1. STEMOXYDINE
This ingredient helps optimize hair stem cell activities. It will help in awakening follicles that are dormant or “asleep”; research has shown that continuous use of this ingredient can reveal up to 1700 new hair in 3 months. This way, you can reduce the number of empty follicles.

2. AMINEXIL
It helps to soften the sheath that surrounds the follicle, increase hair’s metabolism rate, and strengthen hair follicles. This way, we can increase the number of hair and thickness of hair per follicle.

3. MINOXIDIL
This ingredient has been proven clinically effective in both the prevention of hair loss and in establishing varying degrees of hair re-growth in males suffering pattern baldness. However, Minoxidil must be used indefinitely for continued support of existing hair follicles and the maintenance of any experienced hair regrowth.

4. SILANOLS

Silanols limit hardening of the tissues, encouraging elasticisation of the follicle walls. With this ingredient, follicles are helped in maintaining optimum physiological conditions for holding the hairs in their seats.

If you have no need for ultra strong topic androgens yet, it might be a good idea to try out different types of shampoo; your hair loss may be exacerbated if you are using the wrong type of shampoo!

Act Point Salon shared that for customers facing hair loss issues, the KINactif Force Hair Loss Control Shampoo appeared to be effective in slowing down hair loss as well. By using active ingredients that attach themselves to the external hair fibre and then gradually penetrate the internal layers, the shampoo stimulates hair growth by increasing the resistance of the hair.

If you’re not sure what to do, seek professional advice from your trusted stylist who can better diagnose your scalp condition!

3. Go for specialized scalp treatments for accelerated healing

Hair Wash CV

If you are undecided on what you should do with your scalp problems, consider consulting scalp specialists from Chez Vous Hair Salon! With state of the art apparatus, they can diagnose your problems and then recommend detox or inhouse procedures such as:

  1. Deeptox (For oily scalp)
  2. Scalp Arrest (For hair thinning & hair loss concerns – hair loss prevention programme)
  3. Scalp Awakening (For hair thinning & hair loss concerns – new hair growth prevention programme)
  4. Blizzard No More (For flaky & dandruff-prone scalp)
  5. Scalp Pacifier (For dry & sensitive scalp)

For those looking to pamper themselves, Chez Vous even has the Amplified Scalp treatment which includes:

  • Expertligent indulgence massage to alleviate all your stress and tension, while stimulating blood circulation to get you back into the rhythm
  • High pressure jet mist to soften the dead skin cells and impurities, better penetrate active ingredients
  • Galvanic ionizer to remove dead cells and impurities, better penetrate active ingredients into scalp, and tone up your scalp muscles
  • Lymphatic drainage massage using k-machine suction pump to detoxify excess water, cellular waste and toxins

4. Keep your hair short and go for frequent haircuts

Keeping the hair short reduces stress on the scalp and helps to make your hair look more voluminous!

(From Left, Men’s Haircut by Kenaris Hair Salon, Men’s Haircut by Vast Hair Salon)

5. Proper hair care to facilitate hair growth

Many men don’t really pay attention to shampooing our hair — we throw in a squirt of shampoo, rub it around, rinse and go as quickly as possible. The benefits of a great shampoo go beyond the obvious (removing dirt, oil, and styling product) and include cleaning the pores, exfoliating the scalp and improving circulation. Here’s our recommended way of shampooing your hair!

1) First, you’ll want to make sure to select the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type.

2) While in the shower, make sure your water is warm but not too hot.

3) Thoroughly wet the hair.

4) Apply a 50c count worth of shampoo into your palm and work it through your hair.

5) Using the tips of your fingers, work in a firm circular motion from the front of the scalp down to the back of the neck and then up the sides towards the temples. Continue this motion for several minutes. This will stimulate and exfoliate the scalp.

6) Rinse the hair completely.

7) Apply conditioner in the same way

8) Rinse the hair with cool water and comb through it again.

9) Dry the hair with a towel using a patting or stroking motion.

6. Conceal your hair loss with Hair Fiber Sprays and even wigs!

If you are facing serious hair loss issues and find that the above tips do not work for you, you may consider ways to conceal the hair loss areas instead.

1. Hair Fiber Sprays

Hair Fiber Sprays like the one above can help temporarily remind you of how you looked like before you had hair loss issues! Although it does seem like a miracle cure, each bottle can be quite costly and last only a few applications. You may also find that the hair fibers drop throughout the day (particularly if it rains or if you do too much physical activity!) so be prepared for numerous trips to the Men’s room to clean your collar from residue.

We don’t recommend it for frequent use as we are unsure if it will worsen the hair loss (particularly hair fiber brands that stick very closely to your scalp!).

And remember, if you are interested in using a hair fiber spray, remember to carry a mirror to view the back of your head and apply it evenly!

2. Wigs

Its quite amazing really to see how authentic the wigs can look. However, natural looking wigs can be very expensive so you may have to shop around if you are intending to go for wigs as your hair replacement!

Thank you Serene from Chez Vous Hair Salon for sharing the above tips!

Revive your Damaged Hair Colour with Expertligent Hair Colour by Chez Vous Hair Salon

$

Is your hair so damaged that your hairstylist has almost given up hope?

With her super dry and damaged hair, Agent J is one such case! Luckily, we have Veyond, the hair director super experienced with fixing damaged hair, from Chez Vous Hair Salon who has kindly offered to help give Agent J a colour fix!

Check out the results of the minimal-bleaching vibrant hair colour for Agent J below!

May 2015

The colours I last got in my hair have faded into a very pastel greenish-blue-straw, and it was time for a colour fix.

Where better to get it done than at Chez Vous?

I’ve read plenty of good reviews about the place and found their Expertligent series very interesting (who wouldn’t, with that name).

Famous for their only-hair-directors-allowed policy, Chez Vous has plenty of hair experts on board and aims to improve the hair industry one hair cut/process at a time with their Expertligent Fix You programme.

I was going to meet Veyond, one of the experts helming their Expertligent Fix You programme, to get her master advice on how to fix my very dry hair.

Chez Vous prides itself on its design-centric concept, and its uniqueness can be seen in the salon’s interior.

A tea bar in the corner, right by the entrance, stocked with high-end teas.

A wall of hands, to symbolise the many skilled hands behind the salon’s success.

A private room (the Wow room) for special guests, with light panels designed to resemble the ever-changing dynamic beauty industry.

Private sections (the Cocoon) for customers who come in for scalp analysis and treatment.

A face in the wall, because beauty is Chez Vous’s main priority.

The wash room, with beautiful cloth resembling wash towels hanging from the ceiling.

Very pleasing to the eye.

Two mannequins are featured inside the salon, dressed in pieces from local designers.

Part of Chez Vous’s initiative to help promote local talent in the fashion industry.

Down to business! Having a consultation with Veyond, Chez Vous’s resident Expertligent expert.

She immediately spotted my dry ends and advised against perming because my hair texture wasn’t ideal for a perm. Perming my already dry hair (due to bleaching) would result in lots of frizz, and Veyond suggested a colour instead, to refresh the fading colours in my hair.

Honest about my hair condition and concerned for my hair health, bonus points!

Here we go!

Goodbye greenish-blue-straw! It was fun while it lasted.

First layer of bleach (only 3% concentration, because Veyond wanted to prevent my dry hair from getting more damaged).

Love it when salons are thoughtful and provide WiFi.

Chez Vous goes many steps further and even offers umbrellas (for rainy days), food, and pillows (for long hours on the chair, waiting for the hair to turn gorgeous).

Into the wash room to wash off the first layer of bleach.

Enjoying my premium Earl Grey tea, before the next layer of colour-correction, to help balance my uneven hair tone and prepare it for colouring.

Veyond decided to continue the colour correction using semi-colour instead of bleach. Bleach would have stripped off the existing colours very quickly, but would have also further damaged my already dry hair strands. Because I wanted to retain my hair length, Veyond patiently applied layers of semi-colour to continue balancing my uneven hair tone.

My hair, purging the remnants of the old colour before welcoming the new.

Finally done with colour correction! A quick blow-dry before application of the new colours.

Because greens and reds are the most stubborn colours to remove, Veyond managed to correct 90% of the unevenness after several rounds of semi-colour. Bleach would have done the job quickly, but Veyond didn’t want my hair to frizz even more than it already does.

Very good to know my hair health is her priority!

On to applying the new colours. I finally get to try ash colours!

First, the roots…

While waiting for the colour on the roots to set, a little bit of reading…

With more than 20 years of experience dealing with all sorts of hair, particularly dry and damaged ones, Veyond is refreshingly approachable, friendly and down-to-earth.

Definitely the go-to stylist for anyone with hair issues!

… then on to the rest of the head! Veyond could tell I liked blue and green, so she mixed a bit of those colours into the ash colour. I can haz ash blue-green hair!

Off to the wash, and returning for my hair shot treatment, to help nourish my dry hair and give it some protein.

Veyond and Royson, her trusty hair technician assistant, help to rub the treatment into my hair.

Time for the treatment to set.

Some waiting (and shameless picture-taking) later…

Treatment washed off and hair ready for blowing dry!

Veyond gives me a quick trim. Very much appreciated.

I’ve been needing a trim for ages :P

Oh the beautiful colours!

Dry + damaged hair, can’t perm, but can still have hair blown into beautiful curls thanks to Veyond!

Veyond says the colours will eventually wash out into a beautiful silver.

Looking forward to that!

Happy me, with the very friendly and approachable Veyond.

I’d recommend Chez Vous for anyone looking to pamper themselves with luxurious treatments, and Veyond for those looking for a skilled stylist who places hair health as the first priority.

Ever wanted to be as beautiful as a Victoria Secrets’ Angel? Chez Vous transformed Agent V into a VS Angel with a Glamorous Voluminous Perm!

We know that Chez Vous is good with fixing damaged hair because of their Expertligent Fix You programme… but how about customers with hair in good condition? Can Chez Vous work its magic to produce celebrity-worthy perms, even for first-timers?

We sent Agent V down to try perms for the first time at Chez Vous Hair Salon!

May 2015

I remember the first time someone showed me a video and told me about Victoria Secrets’ Angels.

VS Angel

Source: http://www.fanpop.com/clubs/victorias-secret-angels/images/32009281/title/angels-photo

Till today, I remember the awe and admiration I have for these superbly beautiful ladies.

I know that I am nowhere near these pretty ladies but I’ve always promised myself to one day get those luscious curls that can make me feel so sexy and glamorous!

Therefore, when Agent G approached me to try out perming for the first time, I was super excited.

Can I finally get the womanly curls I’ve always dreamed of?

Almost like a little girl, I skipped my way to Chez Vous Hair Salon, the salon I’m entrusting my first perming experience to. I have very high expectations for Chez Vous as I had previously read many MANY promising reviews from Harpers Bazaar, Style and even Beauty Undercover!

The salon itself gave me a great impression! Even though it was tucked right outside Best Denki, the salon was like a whole new different world within.

For salon customers who arrive early, there is a HYDRA bar with a range of premium teas and coffees.

Chez Vous Hair Salon

For customers who require privacy (whether you are a celebrity or perhaps am facing some hair loss issues), there is a WOW private room and 3 COCOON rooms to shield away from the crowd.

At the back of the salon, SPLASH room is where hair washes are done. Apparently, the chairs here are already 10 years old… but they still look really well maintained!

Seats

Next, I was ushered to my seat. The stylist who attended to me was Veyond, one of Chez Vous’ in house perm expert! She is so good at what she does, she even helps Chez Vous in their Expertligent Fix You program to help fix botched perms from other salons!

With her taking care of my hair, I was totally assured that it will turn out well.

During the consultation, Veyond played with my hair and examined the hair condition, length and texture.

BEFORE_FRONT_CLOSEUP

BEFORE_BACK_CLOSEUP

BEFORE_SIDE_CLOSEUP

See my hair looked so limp and lifeless now… definitely very far away from being a VS angel!

Luckily, based on Veyond’s expert opinion, she says that my hair is healthy enough for a perm!

As I felt a little kiasu and my first time doing perms, I reiterated that “I do not want maggie mee curls!”

To allay my fears, Veyond patiently showed me some pictures of how the end result will look like. She assured me I was suitable for C Perm and that she will add some root perm to give my crown more volume.

OKAY THEN!

Veyond then proceeded to ask her hair assistant to wash my hair.

Sorry no pictures but the hair wash chair was indeed super comfortable! It prepared me well for the long treatment time later on!

P1000019

After my hair wash, Veyond began sculpting the perm with a haircut. By adding some layers, she says that the curls will be accentuated! The trim also helps to clear off any dry and split ends!

Apply Perm Lotion

Once the haircut was done, Veyond began to apply the applied protein pre-treatment to my hair. This helps to strengthen and protect the hair right to prevent breakage!

P1000029

Next, the perm lotion is applied.

The hair is separated into sections and then curled!

P1000033

Heat is then applied to fix the curls with a spider-like machine they consider to be their trade secret!

During the machine heating, Veyond added extra sponge cushion in between the rollers. I didn’t know the importance of these sponge cushions until one fell out accidentally.

It was hot! The machine was indeed heating up my hair to a high temperature!

Thankfully, the attentive hair assistant spotted that the sponge cushion has dropped and helped me to put it back in place.

P1000042

Once the perm is done, Veyond went ahead to do the root perm for my fringe / bangs!

During the entire process, I had lots of questions for Veyond. I asked about the differences between perms and how to maintain my hair. Despite my many queries, Veyond was ever patient in answering them. She is also very honest and straightforward, sharing with me that this perm would not remain curly for more than 3 months. This honest opinion made me really trust her alot!

My hair is almost almost ready now!

But the super careful and considerate Veyond wants to add one last treatment to my hair: the specially formulated treatment called “Feed and Fit Hair Treats”.

Fit and Feed Hair Treats

The treatment may look ordinary but it has actually won multiple awards recently (Harpers Bazaar Magazine Beauty Best Kept Secrets 2015 – April 2015 & Style Magazine Best Beauty Treats – May 2015).

What the treatment does is that it reconnects broken disulphide sulphur bonds. This helps to repair your hair by infusing it with  concentrated dose of Bond Multiplying ingredient for 15 minutes and then later with the Bond Perfecting hair mask to act as insurance against all future chemical services!

Finally my hair is cleansed and conditioned.

It looks a little curly now but give Veyond another 15 minutes of blowdrying!

Blow Dry

While blowdrying, Veyond imparted some really important tips on how to maintain my curls. She taught me how to twist my curls and use the hair dryer to recreate them at home.

She also recommended some additional curl products to give the curls a boost where necessary.

So here’s the result!

After Perm Front View

P1000115

Really very happy with my hair!

This is exactly what I envisioned… sexy flowy curls!

When I played with my hair, I could feel a visible difference in how SOFT and well maintained it is! So glad they gave me the Feed and Fit Hair treatment which protected and repaired my hair so well!

Just a quick Before and After:

Before and After Front

Before After back

My hair looked healthier after than before the perm and certainly much livelier!

Thank you Veyond and Chez Vous Hair Salon for making me feel so pretty!

Overall Conclusion

I REALLY enjoyed my time at Chez Vous Hair Salon. The place was indeed as good as Beauty Undercover described… and more!

The staff especially are very attentive, treating each customer like a genuine friend and ensuring their drinks were topped up each time they spotted an empty cup. I tried their Latte and tea; which were pretty yummy!

Tea and magazines at Chez Vous

They even asked several times if I needed lunch during my long hours there. Their customer service is really up there as they not only care for your hair, they care for your wellbeing as well. Veyond, my hair stylist even went an extra mile to provide me a pillow to rest my back which she said will help during my long hours of sitting down. She even offered a blanket in case I was feeling cold in the hair salon!

But of course, I’m there for my hair service. And I must say Veyond certainly exceeded my expectations. If Veyond feels that it’s not suitable; she will advise against it. Instead she will explain and offer alternatives to consider. She will also try her best to tailor the hairstyle to your liking and bring out your best features. She made me feel that I was in safe hands although I was a newbie to perming.

She was also honest about the fact that this perm will probably not last more than 3 months because of its mild curls. Regardless, I’m happy to feel like a princess for these 3!

So once again, big thank you to Veyond and all the staffs from Chez Vous Hair Salon.

Super thankful for your service! I will definitely be back!

Model-worthy Voluminous Men’s Haircut at Kenaris Hair Salon

Ever wondered what male models look for when they visit a hair salon?

This week, we’re privileged to have budding model and Manhunt Singapore 2014 Fan Favourite Andee Chua try out Men’s Haircut by the highly demanded Jimmy from Kenaris Hair Salon.

Read more about his experience below!

May 2015

Hi, I’m Andee Chua, currently a model with Jem International and also a dance instructor at Virgin Active.

I’ve entered the modelling industry not too long ago but am glad to have the opportunity to participate in fashion shows in Milan and Paris in June 2015.

Just as I was preparing for the shows in June, Agent G invited me to try out Men’s Haircut by Kenaris Hair Salon.

It was an easy “Yes” for me, given that Kenaris has been quite active in magazine shoots as well and is particularly well reviewed among men!

And of course, I needed a haircut as well.

1. Before Front 2. Before Side

As you can see from my front and side view, my hair was getting a little long, making it look flatter and harder to style during shoots.

3. Consultation

I was assigned to Jimmy, an experienced stylist who has worked with various models before.

The first thing Jimmy did was to have a comprehensive consultation session with me. He took the time to hear about the type of hairstyles I was looking for and gave me valuable suggestions on the hairstyles that suited me. He also showed me pictures so that there is no misunderstanding or miscommunication about the what I want.

Jimmy also analyzed my hair type and gave some tips about maintaining my hair to ensure that it doesn’t go too flat.

4. Hair Wash
We didn’t take pictures during the hair wash but I must say that it is really good!

She was attentive and friendly and the head massage she gave during the hair wash was on point!

5. Haircut
Soon, Jimmy began the haircut. Jimmy himself looked stylish so this also made me more confident about putting my hair in his hands.
8. Haircut
6. Haircut
Despite the unsmiling pictures, Jimmy is actually very friendly during the haircut. He tries to kill awkward silences by making small talk, which is something I prefer. He is however not too talkative and still very serious during the cut.
He was also very professional, patiently answering to any doubts I may have with regards to the hairstyle.
10. Volumizing Spray
Use of Sea Spray to increase volume
Jimmy even gave me tips about how to style my hair, from blow drying to simple natural styling with the Sea Spray, something new I learn from today’s session.
11. Blow Dry
One last word of advice…
12. Styling Advice
And I’m done!
13. After Front 14. After Side
The transformation doesn’t look so drastic… until you compare the Before and Afters.
Before and After Front
Before and After Side

This haircut has given my hair a lot more volume (just compare the height of my hair) and made me look more presentable overall.

I also feel particularly refreshed after the cut.

Overall I like the experience, the vibe and rather private location of the salon.
I would definitely recommend friends to try out Kenaris Hair Salon!

Get Ready for Your Interview: Tips for a Winning Hairstyle!

$

The way you wear your hair to a job interview can be as important as the clothes you wear. True, what you bring to the job in experience and drive should be most important. But remember: the employer doesn’t know you yet! All the interviewer sees is what you present during your very first meeting at the interview. First impressions count!

To help you make the very best impression, we’ve approached Jamie Seah, Associate Salon Director of Chez Vous Hair Salon to give us some valuable tips!

KEEP IT FORMAL, NEAT & SIMPLE

Less is more! Avoid elaborated styles when going for a corporate interview. Keep your hairstyle from being a distraction during the interview so the employer can focus on getting to know you. You don’t want your potential employer seeing you as someone who is “high maintenance” (i.e. requiring lots of attention and time and distracting you from the job). Of course, we’re not saying that you should look like you don’t even care about your appearance. Keep your style sleek, fuss-free and professional. A neat ponytail or low chignon works too.

#16 CARYN

TAME THE FRIZZY & UNRULY HAIR

 #6 TARA

Singapore is a great country to live in. Unfortunately, the humidity is a disaster for our hair. Humid air causes hydrogen bonds to form between water molecules and the proteins in your hair, triggering frizz and unruliness.

To resolve this issue, consider these tools – they are easy to use, fast and economical!

STEP 1: Use frizz control hair products on towel-dried hair.

A little goes a long way. Always focus from mid to ends, avoiding the roots.

Technology has evolved considerably over the past few years. Gone are the days when frizz control products are oily, heavy and sticky. These are our favourite products:

  • REDKEN Frizz Dismiss Leave-in Smoothing Control Cream FPF 40 (Frizz Protection Factor)
  • Kerastase Discipline Fluidissime Spray
  • KMS Tame Frizz Smoothing Lotion

STEP 2: Use a hair dryer to blow hair in downward motion.

Let’s face it, not many ladies can style their hair using a round brush. However, with the above products, you can comb your hair through using your fingers while pointing the hairdryer in a downward direction to achieve a salon blow-out look.

Sometimes, we’re just plagued with bad hair days (e.g. after a long day of travelling, too much hair flip) that can cause frizzy hair. Fret not, try out REDKEN’s latest Frizz Dismiss finishing sheets. Think of this as “tissue paper” for your hair. Divide hair into sections, wipe it using this miracle product, and you’re ready for your interview!

Sounds like too much work? Looking for a quicker and stress-free way to have beautiful hair for your interview? Consider undergoing Chez Vous’s Amplified Keratin Treatment to tame the frizz and promote ease of styling.

RAISE THE VOLUME AT THE ROOTS

The worst problem most ladies face before an interview is “flat hair”. Excess sebum production on the scalp can be caused by stress (yes, we know interviews are stressful), weather or scalp irregularities. You don’t need to spend a bomb to get a root perm (which usually doesn’t last in our humid weather) or perm your hair to create more texture. Try this “secret” product that Chez Vous uses every morning on Channel News Asia’s news presenters – REDKEN Cerafill Dense FX Hair Diameter Thickening Treatment.

Section hair and apply REDKEN Cerafill Dense FX Hair Diameter Thickening Treatment on the scalp. Gently massage at roots. This works on both towel-dried and dry hair, and will give you the extra lift you desire. You will love it!

#8 FIONA

Of course, try not to keep your hair length too long as it will drag the entire hair strand down!

LOOK AGE-APPROPRIATE, PROFESSIONAL AND EMPOWERED

Let’s face it – on one hand, some of us look younger than our age (which is a good thing, but might not work to your advantage when going for an interview, especially if you’re interviewing for a high level position).

#21 JANICE

On the other hand, some of us look more haggard (low in energy) for our age. Many times, this is due to our choice of haircut. In recent years, keeping one’s hair long is highly desired by many Asians. Unfortunately, many do not know that the same long hair is “dragging” their “energy” down. Also, it “hides” their beautiful features. In short, this is a result of our hairstyles not framing our face or complimenting our look.

#5 KRISTIN Chez Vous Hair Makeover

Consider undergoing a total transformation by cutting a mid – short hairstyle that will enhance and compliment your features for that important interview! For younger women (especially fresh graduates), a refreshing haircut can make you look more professional and empowered. As for matured women, a new hairstyle can help you look more fresh and energized. Short haircuts usually exude confidence and professionalism.

SOFTEN YOUR LOOKS WHEN NEEDED

Women who are applying for sales, public relations or hospitality positions should ideally look approachable and friendly. In the event that your look is a little stern and serious, opt for bangs! Soft bangs can soften your look and make you look more amicable and sociable. Blunt-cut bangs can make a statement, but the statement may be too bold for some industries.

#4 SHELLY

REFRESH YOUR HAIR COLOUR

 #3 LAVONNE

Having brassy and copper-ish hair colours 2 months after your last colour? Refresh your hair colour before your interview! Yellowish and golden highlights make you look sallow and down. Your level of energy and perceived drive are key success factors for an interview.

AVOID MANIC-PANIC COLOURS… UNLESS YOUR WORK REQUIRES IT!

#22 EMILY

Funky hair or wild streaks of bold colour might work to your advantage in an interview for an artistic job, but for most interviews, conservative and natural colours will serve you best.

Whether you’re a fresh graduate,  an experienced hire looking out for new opportunities, or someone who just wishes to have a fresh makeover, Chez Vous Hair Salon has a one day event just for you!

Mark your calendars, ladies!

Get Ready for Your Interview: Tips for Face, Makeup and Nails!

You just received a call for an interview at that job you’ve been wanting and your nerves are already through the roof. First, what to wear. Next, figuring out how to do your hair and makeup. Believe it or not, how you look has a lot to do with whether or not you land that dream position. But don’t panic.
Beauty Undercover comes to the rescue with answers to your burning beauty questions on how to look insanely professional and chic when trying to nail that dream job.

The key is to understand the importance of first impressions. Your goal should be to convey your competence, neatness, and attention to detail — all of which can be communicated through your appearance. More importantly, the more confident you are about your appearance, the more you’ll be able to focus on presenting your qualifications and experience.

We’ve compiled some quick and practical beauty tips for your next job interview, to help you ace that interview!

Skin: Keep it well and spend less time on make up!

If you worry about your acne acting up the day before your big interview, you’re not alone! Many struggle with flare ups, especially in our hot and humid Singapore climate… and we all know how long it can take to cover up those terrible blemishes using makeup!

For those of you plagued with such issues, we have some tips from Shiori from NUA Singapore, one of our favourite facial therapists in Singapore!

  • Certain comedogenic cosmetic products, such as BB or CC creams may sound attractive to those of you with acne skin. However, the wrong type of BB cream, serum or moisturizer can actually clog your pores and cause you to have more acne instead! Therefore, DON’T try a new facial products days before your interview. If you are still weeks away, you can consider trying new facial products on a small spot on your face to test if it is right for you! If not, visit a dermatologist for recommendations.
  • Simple is best and it’s always safer to stick with organic or/and dermatologist-certified products.
  • Shiori mentioned that clay cleansers are a lot more effective than typical cleansers in making sure that your face is well cleansed. Therefore, she would recommend daily pore cleansing using clay cleansers instead of normal cleansers! An example is the Dermalogica Clay Cleanser shown here: http://www.dermalogica.com/dermal-clay-cleanser/2,default,pd.html
  • Remember to put on non-comedogenic sun screen as excessive sun can also irritate your skin and worsen your acne issues!
  • Eat well. High -glycemic-index carbohydrates like white bread and snacks with loads of sugar raise blood sugar and insulin levels, leading to breakouts. Balance your hormones with whole grains and vegetables. We know you are stressed but try to avoid chocolate or excessive sweet snacks the week of your interview!
  • If the adult acne is very severe with hormonal imbalance as the root cause, you should consider going for a check up at the National Skin Centre for actual medicines that can control your condition.
If you are able to incorporate the above tips into your skincare regime, you are likely to see an improvement in your skin after some time!
For those who want to accelerate the process, however, we would recommend you to stop by NUA Singapore.
Shiori from NUA has developed an acne program to help customers improve their skin condition which includes Gentle Peeling, Deep Pore Ultrasound Cleansing, Manual Extraction, Purifying and Soothing treatments.
Shiori has helped many customers improve their skin condition and an example of one of her customers’ skin before and after 5 sessions is shown here:
NUA_Acne_before after
This young customer of hers is 22 years old and has been plagued with acne condition for the past 6 months due to puberty-related hormonal imbalance. She came to NUA Singapore every 3 weeks for 5 sessions, used topical creams and clay cleanser masks for daily care at home as well as recommended acne treatment lotion and moisturizer. For make-up, she switched from heavy liquid foundation to mineral skin care foundation and concealer and avoided comedogenic cosmetic products.

After 3 months into the acne program, her acne has improved greatly.

So for those of you plagued with acne, don’t lose hope! Figure out what’s wrong with your current homecare regime and go to a trusted therapist like Shiori from NUA Singapore for some real effective advice!

Makeup: Less Is More

  • Make sure your makeup doesn’t distract the interviewer from your talent and charisma while you’re in the hot seat. An interview isn’t the place to experiment with the latest runway trend you’ve seen.
  • Simple, more natural-looking makeup for your complexion is the best look to strive for. If you still want to add a bit more color or highlight a feature, try to focus on just one area, such as lips, cheekbones, or eyes, to avoid looking clownish or like you are dressed up to go out.
  • For acne-plagued readers, consider using mineral makeup and concealers to avoid flare ups!
  • The night before your interview, exfoliate chapped lips by scrubbing them with a warm, wet washcloth. Follow with a generous coating of lip balm. Before the interview, use a sheer lipstick to give your lips a hint of color.
  • Wear lipstick, not lip gloss. Gloss is too shiny and youthful for a formal occasion like an interview.
  • Use eye shadows in neutral shades such as tan, brown, and cream. A little bit of shimmer is fine, but stay away from adding a lot of shine to your eyelids.
  • Mascara and a thin line of smudged pencil eyeliner are really all you need. Skip the liquid liner, even if you can apply it like a pro.
  • Well-groomed brows show that you pay attention to details. Tweeze any stray hairs that threaten to give you a monobrow. If you have brow gel, use it to set your brows in place. (A tiny bit of hair gel, diluted with water, can do the same thing.)
  • A little bit of blush makes everyone look healthier. Use this rather than bronzer for a natural-looking, healthy glow.
  • Give yourself extra time. If you usually take five minutes to get ready in the morning, allow yourself 15. It’s better to build in some wiggle room.

For those of you into eyelash extension, you should also consider J Curl, L Curl or B Curl lashes from Kazumi Japanese Eyelash Studio instead of the usual CC or C Curl to look more professional. Try to do the lash extensions a few days before the interview to ensure that the lash extensions are looking their best!

Fragrance: One Easy-to-Remember Guideline

Source: Flickr Creative Commons

  • Don’t wear any. You don’t want your interviewer put off by a scent he/she doesn’t find appealing. Everyone has different preferences when it comes to smell. Err on the side of caution and skip the perfume.
  • Deodorant, however, is a go especially if you have to brave through the hot Singapore sun!

Nails: A Few Tips

Selena's Nails at Glamorous Nails

  • Unless you have naturally clean, even, hangnail-free nails, schedule a manicure a day or two before your big interview.
  • It doesn’t matter whether your nails are long or short. They should be neatly filed. For men, nails should be cut short. Women’s nails shouldn’t be excessively long.
  • A neutral nail is foolproof, so look for barely there beige and pink polishes. Classic red can work, too, but use your judgment: it’ll probably fit in at an ad agency but not at a conservative law firm.
  • Skip the french manicure; some people think they’re classy, but others think they’re corny. Stick with a single colour.
  • Chipped nail polish looks unpolished and unprofessional. Be sure to either remove your old coat or apply a new one!

Attire: Fit the culture!

  • Depending on what the interview is for, you may be able to dress more casually for some jobs than others. This is especially true for jobs that don’t require wearing a suit to work everyday.
  • If you are unsure as to what level of professionalism to dress for, it is better to look more polished and less casual.
  • Your outfit can be stylish and flattering, but it should also be simple and not divert attention away from your face, words and resume.
  • Pencil skirts, dress pants, blazers, dresses with appropriate coverage, plain button-up shirts, cardigans, nice blouses and simple and untarnished pumps, boots or flats are all acceptable articles of clothing to wear for interviews. Basic jewellery is appropriate, especially in gold, silver or black.

image via blog.carneysandoe.com

While these guidelines can be applied to most interviews and professional settings, you can do even more to prepare for your specific interview. If you are familiar with the workplace or business, look at what the current employees wear to their jobs. If possible, check out what people in your specific position wear on a daily basis.

Finally, smile!

All the primping and grooming don’t mean a thing if you don’t look excited to be there.

Good luck!

Is your hair naturally unruly, frizzy and difficult to control?

With her dry and hay-like hair, Agent C was at her wits end until she was invited to try out Volume Rebonding from Koinonia Hair Salon: a hair straightening process that adds natural curls at the end for a more voluminous and natural look!

Check out her experience below!

May 2015

It’s been about 1.5 weeks since I pampered my hair and I’m getting used to my new hair! Hahaha!!

So I guess its finally time I shared about it. Hahahha!! My hair is always in a mess as much as I try to tame it. Natural wavy, frizzy hair, I can’t help but admit that sometimes I think my hair looks like hay, black hay..

Don’t believe? Let me show it to you!! Please don’t judge!! Hahahhaaha!!

Before Charmaine

NAHH!! Say hello to my hay hair!

LETS REWIND TO APRIL

So one day in office, I received a message from Agent G, founder of Beauty Undercover, if I would like to go for volume rebonding at KOINONIA HAIR SALON. She heard about my hair from @rebekatee  (I secretly suspect beks can’t stand my hay hair anymoreL my nv comb hair partner in crime)

A short intro about Beauty Undercover (http://www.beautyundercover.sg), it is a website where you can find all kinds of hair reviews of different hair salons. Most importantly, the reviews are sincere and authentic. Go check it out if you haven’t! Trust me, you will be stuck on that website for a while reading all those reviews.

Anyways, I went to check out about KOINONIA. Just google Koinonia, and all the good reviews about them, specifically volume rebonding ones can be easily found. WOOHOO!! So after some arrangement, my hair appt was set to be 10th May!! And I happily started my countdown to the Hairperience (Hair + Experience) with Koinonia!

FINALLY ITS D DAY!!

Koinonia Hair Salon

I nervously made my way to the salon at Pacific Plaza near Orchard MRT! That’s how the entrance looks like. I was slightly early for my appt at 11am, so I went to the washroom as I knew it was gonna be a long session. When I was done, I headed to Koinonia Salon and saw Agent S walking in. Agent G wasn’t able to be there with me, so she got Agent S to go with me instead. Cynthia, the creative director was at the reception and welcomed me when I told her about Agent G.

I was brought to my seat. Decided that I should take a few photos of the salon before Agent S takes over my camera and snap the pictures for the whole procedure.

Quote on the wall of Koinonia Hair Salon

This quote was right smack at the wall near where im seated. Its like talking to me!! Hahahha!! I should start dolling myself up, in case I meet my destiny LOL!! I need to be as pretty as possible.

Here’s a picture of how the salon looks like.

Koinonia Hair Salon

And so.. it’s the start of my Hairperience at KOINONIA!!

WARNING!! LONG POST AHEAD!!

Consultation with Cynthia

Here’s Cynthia analyzing my hair to ensure that I’m a suitable candidate for volume rebonding. It’s afterall a chemical treatment, so it is going to be damaging no matter how good/healthy your hair is. Like a hair doctor, she asked if I dyed my hair, when I last cut my hair, and when I last rebonded my hair.. She means business okay!!

Lucky me, my hair is actually quite healthy despite it looking so much like hay.

So it’s an OKAY for volume rebonding!!

Consultation with Cynthia

She checked how I would like my hair cut and how short I wanted to go.

I’m comfortable till shoulder length.

Based on her professional opinion, she said that slightly below shoulder is good so that the C curl will fall nicely around shoulder length!

Sounds good to me!

She brought over an iPad to show me examples of how my hair will look like. LOL!!

Consultation with an iPad

Spot the hay hair. You want a clearer look?

Hay Hair

here you go! Cant wait to say goodbye to them!

Korean Kimono

Changed into my Korean Kimono LOL!!! And off I go to enjoy a good hair wash by Gino, the hair assistant.

Hair Wash

The most unflattering angle, but who cares, I’m enjoying my hair wash by Gino, and it was SOOOO GOOD.  His scalp massage is THUMBUP SHIOK!!

Gino Drying Hair

That’s Gino, drying my hair.

Cynthia Trimming Hair

Here’s Cynthia working her scissors on my hair, to trim it to a good length, removing all those dried/fried ends so that I can have nice hair at the ends :)

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I told you right, she meant business when she was analyzing my hair, she said its better to do a treatment tgt with the volume rebonding so that my hair will remain smooth after the procedure,  which means yayy!! I don’t have to worry about them hair becoming HAY again! The recommended treatment is the 5 steps MUCOTA TREATMENT.

MUCOTA TreatmentMUCOTA Treatment and Steaming

This is what I understood from the stylist, the first 2 steps will be done before the rebonding to strengthen the hair and increase elasticity, so the hair won’t break easily.  So there they are applying some solution to my hair and using the steamer behind to accelerate penetration of the solution.

And the last 3 steps will be done after rebonding to condition the hair.

The steaming probably lasted around 10-15 mins!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

After the steaming, Gino put on a ear caps and the visor for me. It’s like putting on battle wear, the battle with Hay Hair! First time having to “put on” a visor on while doing my hair. It helps to prevent any chemical / shampoo foam from getting into your eyes/face. Really thoughtful please!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Applying the rebonding lotion. Gino is really meticulous in ensuring that every single strand of my mane is coated with the lotion.

Heating Machine

After applying all the goodness, it’s time to set the hair, the machine opens and closes and a faint “London bridge is falling down” music was playing as the machine does its job, make me want to fall asleep.

Applying Rebonding Lotion

Checking and applying more of that goodness to my hair.

And the machine is back to heat my hair. Trying to pay attention to the music it’s playing. Did I hear “twinkle twinkle little stars” this time? Omgosh, are my ears hearing things??

Hair Wash

After about 30 mins of heating, it’s time to wash it off.

Enjoying the hair wash once again.

I asked Gino about the machine and he said the heat helps to open the hair cuticles and speeds up the process, as the hair is able to absorb the cream faster. He also cleared my suspicion about “London Bridge & Twinkle Twinkle”. It was really playing! Hahahha!

Towel Drying Hair

Gently towel drying my hair, I don’t even treat my hair so gently.

Cynthia Helped with blow drying

Cynthia checked on my hair and also helped with the blow-dry!

So after washing. They started to curl the ends of my hair and I look like this!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Curling Hair

Curling hair using machine

Then they started clipping the curls to the machine. Hahaha!! It reminded me of tentacles.

Am I saying hello to nice hair soon?? I hope so!

Curling Fringe

While waiting for the curls to set, he started curling my fringe, OH THE HORRORR!!

AHJUMMA LIM IN THE HOUSE YO!

Ahjumma

I was starting to get worried about the curls:/ and asked about it, and I was assured the end results won’t be like this.

Removing Curls

After a good about 15 mins or so, the tentacles beeped and it was time to remove the curls. And it looked so curly!!

I can hear myself crying inside

THIS WASN’T WHAT I SIGNED UP FOR :(

But hey hey, it’s too early to judge, Gino started using the straightener to straighten my hair and adjust the curls. What he did was to straighten until the end leaving a C curl, thus the name. Hahaha! So cool!

Removing Curls

that’s why a smile for the picture even though with the curls!!

See how focused he is!

Removing Curls

After all that curls adjustments, that’s why my hair looks like from the back & I’m 80% done!!

Back

Next, It’s neutraliser time!!  So he’s spraying the neutraliser solution into my hair and combing through it as meticulous as he can be. And after all that neutralizing, its time to wash the hair again!!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

After patting dry the hair, Gino continued with the remaining 3 steps from the earlier treatment to condition the hair.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

He started applying the treatment lotion onto my hair in sections. Did I mention that it smelt good too?

Steaming

Say hello to the steam for another 10 mins, to let my hair absorb all the goodness.

& We’re almost done!!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

blow drying the hair

AND….. TADAHH!!!

Final Hair

That’s how the back of my hair looked like..

Let me remind you how it looked like again.. LOL!!

Volume Rebonding before and After

HELLO NICE & TAMED HAIR!!

Thank you Cynthia

Here’s one with Cynthia before I left the salon!

Really wanna say a BIG BIG BIG THANK YOU to Cynthia & Gino from KOINONIA Salon for having me and giving my hair so much LOVE.

I really haven’t seen them so tamed in the longest time!

1.5 weeks on!!!

After two weeks on

Loving it!!

No more Hay Hair, LOL, even if I don’t comb, no one can tell cos its so tamed now.

If you haven’t given your hair some pampering, perhaps its time you should!

Agent T did her Summer Holiday Hair at Air Salon

It’s JUNE… and this means that Summer holidays is officially here!

Have you done up your hair before that awesome June getaway?

If not, check out Agent T’s experience at Air Salon… she loved the Aveda Hair Colour and Highlights she did at Air!

June 2015

I did absolutely nothing to my hair since the last time I visited the salon, which was like, in January. Well, partly because I was simply too busy with too many other things far more important than my hair.

I’ve been wanting to visit a salon since my holidays and well, I couldn’t really decide what I wanted to do with my hair and it was starting to become an everyday problem. I knew if I didn’t solve this any sooner, this problem would have turned into a nightmare. Thanks to an invite from Air Salon, I could finally do something with my hair.
.
I met Hovern, the leading stylist from Air Salon.

But now, the question was; jet black or bright highlights? D perm or no perm? The possibilities were just endless. After I sat down in my comfy chair and entered into a serious 20 minute discussion on the most important decision in my life at that moment, we decided to give my hair a brighter shade and do some highlights. He said he would be mixing a hair colour for me so it would suit me better. There and then, Hovern started working his magic on my hair

After a good 5 hours or so, we did it.

I must say I was pleasantly pleased with my entire experience at hair salon, the ambience there is amazing; you’d feel so pampered once you step in. Moreover, I was given a private room – what’s there not to love? And of course, the people there were extremely nice to me and I was even served honey lemon tea during my 5 hours there. They were all so easy to talk to and of course, what can be more important than that?

More pics after the experience:

To me, making sure your hair is on point is pretty important. No one would wanna be seen with frayed, dull hair. I’m so glad to have given it a new shade, just in time for summer! Credit goes to Air Salon.

Top Hair Myths DEBUNKED!

$
0
0

You’ve probably heard them all — “Don’t pluck a gray hair or two more will grow back in its place”, “make sure your eyebrows always match the colour of your hair”, the list could go on for ages. Hair myths have been around so long, we’ve accepted them as wisdom.

So which old wives’ tales actually have truth behind them? There are so many different sayings and “rules” for hair that it often becomes confusing to know which ones are helpful and which ones are downright silly.

We’ve consulted stylists from CLEO Hair & Make to bust those myths and help you find out what helps and which tips you can toss aside!

Haircut begins

1. “Cutting your hair regularly makes it stronger/makes it grow faster.”

Your hair is not a lawn or a rose bush where cutting stimulates fresh growth. While trimming does help to maintain and keep the hair healthy, and also to keep split ends at bay, it doesn’t affect the way that the hair grows. Cutting your hair frequently may make it appear longer and even thicker because you’re getting rid of split ends and breakage that can leave hair looking thin and sparse.

Of course, we’re not saying that you shouldn’t trim regularly. Please do! A cut every few weeks help to keep the hair neat and in shape. If you’re growing your hair out, trim every eight weeks for the best effect.

Dry Damaged Hair

2. “You can repair split ends.”

As much as we wish this one were true, it’s not. The only way to “cure” split ends is to cut them off. It is not possible to reset a broken-off hair in the same way as a broken bone! With the proper products and hair maintenance (trims, conditioning), you will be less likely to have split ends on a regular basis.

Hair Shampoo

3. “Using the same shampoo too often lessens its effect.”

It doesn’t. The same shampoo used on the same hair under the same circumstances always gives the same result. Hair doesn’t build up a resistance to a shampoo in the way that bacteria may build up a resistance to antibiotics. So why does changing our shampoo regularly appear to have an effect on our hair? The real reason could be that your hair has changed. You may have had it permed or coloured, cut it, grew it long, or your state of health may be different.

The key component to ensuring your shampoo will work is to find one that is perfect for your hair type. There’s no real link to repeated use of your favorite shampoo and unhealthy hair. Of course, we understand that sometimes, it’s just fun to change our shampoo and get a new scent. But if you belong to the group that likes to stick to what you’ve tried and loved, feel free to keep using the same shampoo!

Hair Colour (Rie)

4. “Sleeping with your hair down makes it grow faster.”

There’s an old myth that says if you sleep with your hair down, it lets your scalp breathe, making it easier for your hair to grow. This is just silly! In fact, sleeping with your hair down can cause tangles, and the oils from your hair might give you acne if your skin is sensitive, especially if you use plenty of hair products. Wear a loose clip or bun on top of your head to keep hair out of your face.

If you are experiencing thinning or hair loss, sleep with your hair down to ensure that you aren’t causing additional breakage, damage or tension at the root, which will ultimately result in added thinning/loss. If you’d like to avoid having tangled hair in the morning, twist your hair up in a loose clip or loose bun instead of tightly pulling it up, which will cause tearing.

Your scalp doesn’t need to “breathe” to grow. It needs nourishment and easy handling!

pluck grey hair

5. “Pull out one grey hair and two more will grow in its place.”

Plucking grey hairs won’t make more of their counterparts grow. However, plucking the hair tends to irritate the follicle and irritated follicles can lead to unhealthy hair, which is probably where the myth gets its origin. The action of pulling out the hair can rupture the hair follicle, and the replacement hair that eventually grows takes longer to regenerate. Plucking may also create scarring that can lead to thinning or patches of hair loss. So, your best bet is to just avoid plucking all together!

Don't wash your hair

6. “If you have greasy hair, skip the conditioner.”

Greasy hair is not caused by conditioning your hair. Grease in our hair is naturally caused by too much sebum being produced from the tissues of the scalp.
For greasy hair, use a clarifying shampoo and only use conditioner on your ends.

Hair Wash at Ame Hair Salon

7. “You should always lather, rinse and repeat.”

Shampooing only once is perfectly fine! You don’t have to repeat. In fact, it’s probably better if you don’t! Ask a stylist and they’ll tell you that shampooing more than once is not a good thing for your hair. Most people should not have to repeat when shampooing. In some cases, if there is a lot of product being used or an excessive amount of buildup, you can repeat, but we recommend using a mild shampoo to avoid irritating the scalp with too many washes. Also, lather gently to avoid extra breakage.

stress

8. “Grey hair is caused by stress.”

While stress can accelerate greying, grey hair is caused by the melanocytes that produce melanin (pigment) dying and therefore no longer producing colour. While many people think that stress causes greying, it is actually determined by genetics. Research has shown that stress can affect your genes, but it would take a very long time for it to change your genes so much that it affects how fast your hair greys.

Bright Sunlight Rays Wide Desktop Background

9. “Sunlight is the best way to lighten your hair naturally.”

While the sun will naturally lighten your color, it’s certainly not the best method to do so, or the healthiest. The scalp is very sensitive and can be prone to sunburn, damaged follicles, and can even leave your hair feeling dry and looking lacklustre. The best way to lighten your hair is to do it with a more natural lightening product that actually lifts your hair without damage.

Avoid staying too long in the harsh sun rays!

Comb Hair

10. “Always comb your hair from top to bottom.”

Combing is a great way to detangle hair, and it should be detangled as often as possible to keep it healthy and protected. However, combing hair from top to bottom can cause a lot of breakage, especially if your hair is still wet. Try starting at the ends, and working your way up from there!

If you have very damaged hair from too much processing, don’t force your comb through your tangled hair! Blow dry your hair and use your fingers to gently spread the hair apart. The tangles will naturally detangle once the hair is dry.

Hair Wash

11. “Washing with cold water is better for your hair.”

Cold water does not influence your hair health. However, extreme heat, whether from water or a hair dyer or even the sun, can damage your hair. Warm water is best for a medium ground. In fact, cold water rinses may not efficiently rinse products out of your hair as well as warm water, and they don’t make your hair any shinier. Though cold water can appear to make your hair shinier, lukewarm water is best to stimulate the follicles on your head, which can make your hair grow faster than cold water can.

There are so many hair myths out there that we thought we’d throw in one more to help debunk another common belief!

Beer Hair

12. “Homemade Hair Treatments like eggs and beer can help to repair damaged hair.”

Mayonnaise, stout, avocado, eggs, fizzy water, olive oil and even coffee are frequently featured in homemade hair treatments. While it may seem logical that food good enough to eat would also be good for our hair, this argument is not proven and often controversial.

Although rich in protein, eggs and mayonnaise may not necessarily help to condition the hair. Egg proteins are actually too large to penetrate hair. Therefore, instead of penetrating hair cells, eggs and mayonnaise leave a sticky residue on the hair instead.

Another oft-quoted example is beer. While yeast can be beneficial for hair, the alcohol in beer can cause your hair to dry out!

That is why specially formulated salon hair treatments are recommended if you want to keep your hair in the best condition!

MUCOTA SCENA Hair Treatment at CLEO Hair & Make

MUCOTA Scena 2

One of our favourite hair treatments is the 3-step MUCOTA Scena Hair Treatment, which includes special ceramides to recreate the structure of hair’s intercellular lipid as well as Maltose-based Millet Jelly to improve hair condition. It contains also matrix and fibril keratin to repair the hair’s cortex and amino acid to repair the cuticle. Special ceramide like substances and MEA like active agents are also included to allow the ingredients to better penetrate the hair.

For those of you who takes the extra effort to maintain your hair regularly, you are in luck!

Japanese hair salon CLEO Hair & Make has created a special 8-session MUCOTA Hair Treatment package for Great Singapore Sale.

8-Session MUCOTA Scena Hair Treatment Package + Free Shampoo Bottle + Free Treatment Bottle which usually cost $1050 will now cost $698, which represents a whopping 33% off.

This is truly a great deal for those of you who go to hair treatments regularly because the MUCOTA Scena Hair Treatment usually cost more than $100 per session. Best of all, these 8 sessions can be shared with your friends and family for a period of one year. There are however only 50 sessions available on a first come first served basis.

Thank you CLEO for helping us debunk some of the hair myths we’ve always found baffling in the past!

11 Tips to Prepare for your Graduation Ceremony!

$

After years of hard work, the day has finally come. Time to file for graduation!

With graduation day looming on the horizon in about a month’s time, have you gotten everything ready?

Here are some tips to help you prepare for an enjoyable and gorgeous graduation day!

1. Plan your outfit.

It’s your graduation day and quite possibly your last day mingling around with your cohort as a student.

3637526468_5f44dac6a9_z

Dress smart, in white collared long sleeved blouses/shirts and dark coloured pants or skirt (e.g. black, dark grey, navy blue or dark brown)

Which colour suits you best? We all have different skin tones and there is no single perfect colour for everyone. As a rule of thumb, solid colors are always the way to go. Plan a formal outfit that matches your hair color, skin tone, eye color and flatters your body shape.

Don’t forget your dark coloured heels for ladies and dress shoes for men!

Court ShoesAldo

The Great Singapore Sale is on right now, so shop early for that simple yet chic clean top and bottom for your special day!

2. Pamper your skin.

One month before your graduation day, you should probably start going for last minute facials to pamper your skin and look your best!

Facial lifting massage

Great facial therapists like Shiori from NUA Singapore can help suppress acne and bring out that inner glow. Don’t wait till the last minute to make your facial appointment. You want to make sure you have beautiful glowing skin for your big day!

We’re jumping the gun a little but they will be having 10% off for Anti-Acne Facial for graduates in July!

3. Learn to smile in front of the camera.. naturally!

Meishu

Do you want to smile with your mouth open, or closed? How do you want your eyes to look? Get in front of a mirror and practise!

Practice makes perfect.

Smile into mirror

Don’t know how to smile? Think of things that make you really happy e.g. your favourite celebrity, something your best friend once said to you that made you laugh, or your adorable pet.

But most importantly, remember: Be natural, be genuine!

4. Make an appointment with your hairstylist / makeup artist early!

Don’t want to worry about your crazy frizzy hair on the morning of your graduation (or simply too lazy to style your own hair)?

Book an appointment with your hairstylist and makeup artist so you can get dolled up for your graduation stress and hassle-free.

You won’t be the only one asking the stylist to style your hair on the day of your graduation, so be sure to book them early before appointment slots get snapped up!

Agent G got her hair styled at 99 Percent Hair Studio, which has both stylists and makeup artists who can help you get ready for that ceremony at 7am in the morning. Plus point: 99 Percent’s Haji Lane outlet was so close to Suntec City, where Agent G’s graduation ceremony was held!

Forgetful Agent G forgot to take a picture right after the makeup and styling, but here’s another customer who did!

Graduation

5. Decide on a style early.

To prevent yourself from getting all flustered, consider deciding on your preferred style for the day early. It could be as simple as ironing your hair straight, or you could even get your stylist to do up a sophisticated style like what Ryu from COVO Hair Salon did for a customer!

Of course, these styles take time so be sure to budget the time in on the day!

Also, avoid adding vibrant colours to your hair unless you want to stand out on graduation day!

Styling (Ryu)Styling (Ryu)Styling (Ryu)

6. Try to put on contact lenses, not glasses. Especially not reflective ones!

Reflective Glasses

Anti-glare glasses are absolutely crucial for photo-taking.

And of course, clean your lenses before you go!

It is absolutely not cool to see oily reflections in your graduation photos.

7. Arrange a time to meet up with your close friends after the ceremony and take a group photo!

Call us “kancheong” but we recommend arranging a time to take a group photo with your close friends before the day of your graduation ceremony!

This might very well be one of the last chances you’d get to meet all of them in one place, so be sure to make your graduation memorable by agreeing on a time to meet and take that special bestie wefie!

8496661431_b8e6c195c2_z

8. Avoid eyebags by sleeping early.

Sleep early

This is especially important for the night before graduation. You don’t want to look like a grouchy monster in photos!

But what if you’re certain that you would not be able to get enough rest for the night? Most Singaporeans lead busy lives, and many don’t get to bed until well after midnight. It’s okay, we understand. Fret not!

If you wake up with tired looking eyes and heavy eyebags on the day of your big day, fret not!

Say ‘goodbye’ to puffy eyes by placing two metal spoons in the freezer the night before. Place the cold spoons directly under your eyes, holding it in place and applying steady pressure for 30 seconds to banish those eyebags!

9. Avoid salty foods the night before to prevent a puffy face

The night before graduation, avoid eating salt-laden food like ramen and chips. Too much salt in the body causes the face to look bloated because of water retention. Drink more water instead and try not to snack late into the night just before your big day!

Closer to bedtime, it is probably better for you to avoid drinking too much water.

Picture 038

10. Prepare your all-in bag at least the day before.

Robe? Check.

Mortar Board? Check.

Safety pins? Check.

Hair gel / hair spray? Check.

For girls: make-up set? Check.

Dry and wet tissues? Check.

Camera? (Try to get one with wide aperture and zoom as guests tend to be seated quite far away from graduands and the hall tends to be a little dark!) Check.

Bring along a garment bag to prevent your robe from becoming excessively crumpled.

Designate one of your guests to take your bag (and your pictures!) after you’re properly robed as you probably won’t be allowed to take anything with you while walking into the hall!

Gown bag

11.  Get up early the morning of your graduation day.

The final and most important tip: Wake up early so you have plenty of time to get ready!

The day is special, so make it count!

Relax and enjoy every moment because the moment will pass you by :)

From all of us at Beauty Undercover

Have a great graduation!

Agent S regained Healthy Looking hair with Japanese Digital Perm and Hoyu Colour by COVO Hair Salon

$

0

Are you unhappy with your dull faded hair colour that makes you look tired and shabby all the time? Agent S got a pick-me-up at COVO Japanese Hair Salon that helped her tired hair regain its shine!

Check out her digital perm and Hoyu Hair colour below!

June 2015

I have always been envious of girls whose hands are so gifted in styling their own hair. I’ve read through fashion magazines, watched YouTube tutorials, followed stylists on Instagram and Facebook but I have never quite gotten the hang of styling!
How do you even use that steaming hot iron tong without burning your face? :(

Visiting the salon can however be a very expensive experience. Therefore, I have been experimenting with DIY hair colour at home.
But then again, what you pay is what you get.

While DIY hair dye can be cheap and easy, the cheap chemical can be rather damaging as we, the non professionals, don’t know how to deal with those chemicals properly.

The colour also NEVER lasts.

No matter which colour base I choose (brown/red/ash green/mocha), my hair always ends up in a shabby yellowish tone like the photos above. I know my hair has turned yellowish for quite a while.

At first, I thought it was still okay.

But no, after seeing the photos, I know it was NOT OKAY.

So when Agent G from Beauty Undercover invited me down to Covo Hair Salon for a sponsored hair service, it was a god-send!

I was already searching for a place to get my hair done and Agent G’s message came just in time.

Located in the heart of Tanjong Pagar district, COVO Japanese Hair Salon is a true blue Japanese Salon run only by Japanese.

Like finally!

I visited Japan two years back and was amazed how everyone looked so good.

The Japanese is at the top of their game when it comes to dressing up and looking good.

Even the elderly looks like a fashionista! So I know I am put into good hands in COVO Hair Salon :)

Upon reaching, I was served a cup of hot tea and titbits to keep my tummy happy.

There was also a covered box on the floor for me to keep my belongings.

So thoughtful of them!

After settling down, my stylist, Shinobu-san came out and greeted me :)

Shinobu san is a very experienced stylist who is really good with haircut and hair design, previously based in Hokkaido. She had her own salon previously but wanted to experience life outside of Japan… and thats why she’s here!

I told her my concerns about the yellowish dull hair and gave her the green light to do whatever she wanted with my hair. Hahaha. That was how much I trusted her!

After the consultation, she recommended a darker shade (reddish brown) to bring out a healthier glow. She would also cut away the very dead and very damaged ends and even suggested a digital perm to add waves to the normally boring straight hair. I was thrilled!

Cut + Digital Perm + Carbonated Spring + Dye

Shinobu-san was really meticulous and skillful. My parting was mostly in the middle and she recommended side parting to bring out another feminine side of me.

After trimming, she applied perming lotion onto the ends of my hair. We waited for about 10 mins before washing off.

And the perming begins!
I had permed my hair numerous times before. Therefore,  I know what to expect from a perming session. Most of the time, I would anticipate with anxiety during the process.
Would the curls turn out too tiny like maggie mee? Would I look like an old aunty after perming? Because it actually did happened in the past before :(
In order to keep the curls longer, I had to to endure through having very hard curls for weeks because the curls would eventually “turn softer and natural like loose wave”. Sounds familiar? Hahahah. Been there, done that.

When the stylist wasn’t skillful enough, sometimes I ended up with “fish-hooks” ends, odd sharp bends at the end of my hair. *shakes head*
But Shinobu-san was so experienced that I didn’t get the fish-hooks! In fact, the ends weren’t damaged! Why?

Because she takes effort in combing through every section of my hair so thoroughly before rolling it up.

Sticks were inserted in between the rubberband and my hair to alleviate the pressure made by the rubberbands. This was to prevent ugly lines/dents caused by the rubberband during the perming.

TAADAA!

Nope, we are not done yet :)

Shinobu-san began applying her specially blended Hoyu Colours onto my hair, starting from the roots.

This reminded me of my experiences in other salons. Usually when you engage a Senior Stylist to do your hair, the senior stylist would only come in during the initial consultation and last part of  cutting and styling. They go missing during the hair colour, washing and perming and leave you to the “technicians” to do the rest while they go around handling other patrons.. The technicians are usually the juniors or hired to wash your hair/ apply treatment. Therefore, you pay a high price to the Senior Stylist, but they don’t follow you all the way.

What comforted me the most was the Shinobu-san did everything herself! She was together with me on my perm journey all the time, right down to sending me out of the salon. Again, I know I was put into good hands.

Shinobu-san used carbonated spring water to wash off the chemical thoroughly. This is rather special as it helps to clear away dirt more effectively, thereby achieving a cleaner and healthier hair.

After washing away the hair dye, Shinobu-san applied lotion onto my hair to make it smoother and more manageable. She then began to blow dry my hair and trim my ends for the last time.

When I looked through the photos for the first time, I was really amazed. Under her magical hands, my hair was transformed so much!

From the almost dead “grass” to the healthy looking voluminous princessy looking hair… wow I feel so grateful to Shinobu!

I can’t resist adding a crown to my head. Hahhahaha

THE FINAL FORM

Recall that I looked like that!

And transformed to this!

Some points were I felt were great:

  • The whole process of dyeing and perming took around 3 hours only
  • Stylist stayed with me throughout the entire the process, handling the dyeing and washing process herself
  • I could see a huge difference and instant confidence boost
  • Curls were very soft and natural directly after perming, looked no where near an aunty. Haha
  • Shinobu san really takes care of my hair. She uses chemicals only when necessary to avoid damaging my hair and thinks of ways to bring out the best of my natural hair texture and face shape! For that I’m grateful!

All said and done, the only thing that I wished could have been better was the price. Hahaha. If only it was slightly more pocket-friendly, I think I would visit every month. Hahaha

Although they charge higher than average, there are NO extra charges for long hair, which is fantastic for girls with long hair. And the prices quoted are already inclusive of GST. What’s more,

Graduation ceremony is coming soon and you are not sure what hairstyle to sport for that special day?

Check out our 5 hairstyle ideas below to help you look great under the Mortar board!

1. Sleek and Straight

Most of us may opt for the Sleek and Straight look, like Emma Watson did when she graduated in 2014.

If your hair is excessively frizzy, you can consider getting your hair rebonded at your favourite hair salons! Rebonded hair tends to be more manageable and therefore more presentable at job interviews… so why not kill two birds with one stone by getting your hair straightened?

For those who are worried that rebonding is too flat for you, well, it all depends on your hairstylist / hair salon! We love the natural S Curve and C Curve Rebonding by Picasso Hair Studio; the added curves make the hair look presentable yet natural (and more voluminous).

Alternatively, you can also go for keratin hair treatments to tame your hair. The relaxer and Keratin therapy at Clover Hair Boutique is an example of what you can do if you want to have straight hair but is not keen to do rebonding!

Of course, you can also visit your trusted hairdresser to get the hair properly blown straight and ironed for a straight and neat look on your graduation day! A quick hairspray is also recommended to keep your hair in place.

TIP: Pulling your hair forward will give too much of a boxed-in look, so wear some simple earrings to add some pizzazz! (Remember not to get those long dangling ones! Your robe will pull your whole look down enough!)

2. Bangs

If you don’t want that awfully square mortar cutting straight across your face, bangs can help break that squarish-ness and add some flow to your hair!

We highly recommend Izumi from Izumi Hair Salon for her expertise in creating fringes that make faces look smaller (note: she doesn’t do fringe cuts alone so you’ll have to go for a full haircut)! Though pricey, her haircuts are always so good and we guarantee you’ll love your new look!

If Izumi is a little out of reach, Chin Yee from Vast Hair Salon is also another great stylist to look for bangs cut and tips to make your bangs look more voluminous!

3. Light Curls

If you like your hair a little wavy and voluminous, consider getting a perm before your graduation, or opt for quick styling on the day itself!

Before and After Front

A voluminous perm like what Agent V did at Chez Vous Hair Salon definitely adds glam to the overall look for your graduation (and even afterwards)!
Such a perm is also formal enough for job interviews after graduation – a great addition for ladies who wish to tone down their angular face or more aggressive personality.

Of course, you don’t have to get a perm if you’re not intending to have curls for long. Styling can also give you those much desired curls for the day!
Here’s a satisfied customer who styled her hair at Kobayashi Hair Design.

4. Low Ponytail

For those looking for a more casual look, particularly for casual portrait photoshoots, a low ponytail can work wonders!

Pull your hair sleekly back and through elastic set low on your neck. Curl the hair ends a little to add some shape and spray the whole thing so that your hair stays in place even when you pull off your graduation hat off (for throwing in the air?).For those less skilled with their hands (or lazy to style their own hair), consider getting a stylist to style the above look on your big day! This casual chic look works well for casual photoshoots but probably not for more formal photos when you’re dressed in your official robe and mortar board.

5. Exotic Buns and Braids

Though buns and braids are not very common for graduation portraits, they are a great way to look sophisticated and special on your important day.
We particularly love how creative Ryu from COVO Hair Salon is with his many bun hairstyles and gorgeous waterfall braids!
