I used to think that fashion is a statement worn only by the rich and famous.

Whether its the latest line of clothing or new hairstyle trends, what I see on the catwalk always seem a little too abstract and out of reach. People Watching on MRT Trains, along Orchard Road, in your office, over at the pub… may just tell you a lot more about fashion trends that are not just trendy but wearable and practical as well.

WELL, if only that does not make me look stalkerish.

Instead of People Watching, well I decided to take a shortcut and talk to one of my favourite hairstylists, Ina (co-founder of Vybe’s Hairdressing) for our first issue of HOT IN SINGAPORE. Those who know Ina will know that she lives and breathes hair colour… the perfect person to talk to for Singapore’s very own 2013 Hair Colour Trends!

Hari Raya, Deepavali and Christmas are just around the corner!

Ina, do you have any HOT HOT HOT hair colour ideas for us?

2013 looks to be the year of vibrant colours. Whether red, blue, green, turquoise, pink, blonde and ash, customers have been experimenting with daring new colours, made possible by new hair trends ombré, dip dye and panel highlights.

#1 Ombré

Ombré refers to a gradual colouring technique where the bottom portion of your hair looks lighter than the roots (top portion). The hair colour remains the same but the bottom portion tends to be coloured with a lighter shade (e.g. with blonde colours)

Overall, this look is very wearable even at work; ombre brightens without being overly loud! Whether or not you are tanned or fair skinned, ombre will suit you.

#2 Dipdye

For those adventurous folks raring to add a bolder colour to your hair ends, Dip Dye is definitely a MUST-TRY! Similar to ombré, Dip Dye is a gradual application of hair colour, giving you the cool faded look. The difference is that the second colour you choose can now be a lot louder than your original shade. In fact, the IN colours now seem to be green, blue and pink; well the colour you choose really depends on your  personality. Because dip dyes colours only your hair ends, you will find that even colours that you usually do not carry well still CAN look good on you!

Still here are some colour suggestions for a dip dye virgin:

  • Very Tanned: cool browns, ash tone, matte, green, blue, violets
  • Normal: most colours work! The colour you choose depends mostly… on your personality!
  • The Fair Lady: warm browns, reds, copper, peachy pink, blondes

Note that if you have a previous hair colour, you will have to do some colour correction before going for dip dye so do visit a trusted hair colourist for advice! Those interested in having ash colours will also have to be ready to fork out some cash to bleach (sometimes twice!) your hair to get the desired colour.

#3 Two toned colours

Other than having a different colour only at the ends, you can liven up your hair with two toned hair colouring – a technique which blends in streaks of similar hair colours for a more natural hair highlight. Bright yet natural –  great for everyday wear!

#4 Panel Highlights

If dip dyes and ombres are getting a little old, panel highlights might just be your thing. Instead of applying colour only at the ends, panel highlights can be applied to any part of your hair. For closet hair fashionistas, bright colours can be applied to the insides of the hair. More audacious folks might however choose to display the pink / multi-colour / green – blue highlights at the most visible segments of their hair.
