We’re impressed not because the chair is nice or that the service is particularly luxurious.
We’re impressed at the stylists’ depth of knowledge and the many steps within the scalp treatment that make it oh-so-good!
Read below to find out which salon has our vote for one of Singapore’s best scalp treatments!
Frankly, we were a little surprised at the beginning to hear raves about scalp treatment at this salon.
It is after all more known for innovative hair colours like this:
For those familiar with the above styles, you’d know that we’re talking about 99 Percent Hair Studio, one of our top recommended hair salons for hair colour!
As we’re on the lookout for where to go for Scalp Treatment these days, our attention was piqued when we had friends tell us this about the scalp treatment they had at 99 Percent Hair Studio:
Therefore, we wanted to find out more!
We’re not going to do the usual sponsored hair visit though…
To see what the entire process entails and to allow us to ask as many questions as possible, we requested for 99 Percent Hair Studio to give us a demonstration of the O’Right Scalp Treatment instead! We will then share with you what we think about the scalp treatment!
(Spoiler Alert: Agent G loved what she saw so much that she scheduled a scalp treatment for her and her husband after the demonstration!)
March 2016
The hair model of the day was Nicole, a hair assistant who has just joined 99 Percent Hair Studio!
She hasn’t tried the O’Right Scalp Treatment so this is also going to be her first time!
Step 1: Scalp Analysis
The scalp treatment begins with a scalp analysis. The stylist who will be demonstrating the treatment to us is Kent, a tall male stylist who speaks with a really gentle tone!
The first thing Kent did was to set up the Scalp Analysis equipment which is made up of the Analysis machine and an iPad. Note that it may take a minute or two to connect, depending on whether the WIFI is working well!
After the equipment is properly connected, Kent proceeded with the Scalp Analysis. Kent explains that he usually scans 3 sections of the scalp for every customer to let them know more about their scalp condition.
The 3 sections are
1) Crown (top of the head)
2) Back of the Head and
3) Side of the Head
Scalp condition at these 3 areas may differ and require different types of treatment so it is important to understand their condition separately!
Nicole knew that her scalp is a oily but even she was a little shocked to see how oily it was!
As you can see, her follicles are clogged and covered with a layer of oil!
Just in case you are wondering what a healthy follicle should look like, here it is!
<Pic of healthy follicle>
A follicle should have clear “holes” as they are pores which should be kept open and not clogged!
Fortunately for Nicole, the back and sides of her head is not as clogged and oily as her scalp, although it is still a little oily.
According to Kent, this is normal as the crown is most exposed to the sun and environmental damage. It is therefore easily clogged, resulting in overly oily hair!
Step 2: Scalp Exfoliation
Now that we know the condition of Nicole’s scalp, Kent moved on to the next step of the treatment: exfoliation.
Just like how exfoliation is an important step in all facials to remove dead skin cells, the O’Right Scalp Treatment also includes scalp exfoliation to remove the layer of dead skin cells on our scalp and declog our pores!
The product 99 Percent Hair Studio uses is this: Pear Wood Exfoliating Gel by O’right.
What Kent did was to squeeze a generous amount of exfoliating gel and section parts of Nicole’s hair so that he can properly apply the exfoliating gel to her scalp!
After that, Kent actually spent 20 minutes massaging the exfoliating gel into the scalp to remove the dead skin cells thoroughly!
Well, even if you can purchase the Pear Wood Exfoliating Gel yourself, it is pretty difficult to apply it properly (sectioning) and then massage every part of it for 20 minutes!!!
We may not be at the receiving end of the massage but it definitely looked super relaxing!
Soon, we started seeing LOTS AND LOTS of dead skin cells on the towel.
Kent will actually show the dead skin cells to the customer after the massage is complete.
Nicole felt a little embarrassed to know that she had SO MUCH DEAD SKIN CELLS accumulating on her scalp… but hey, we didn’t even know it was possible to exfoliate our scalp like our face in the first place!
The long massage was to us also a very important differentiating point for this scalp treatment!
Step 3: Shampoo
The earlier scalp analysis showed that Nicole had oily scalp so Kent decided to use Tea Tree Shampoo for her to help her control the scalp oiliness.
There are actually 6 types of shampoo customized to different scalp types e.g. Tea Tree and Camillia for Oily Scalp, Champagne Rose for Colour Treated Hair, Goji berry for fine and limp hair and so on.
Kent poured a small amount of the shampoo into a small bowl and applied it directly onto the scalp.
He then does the first round of shampooing at the seat with a long relaxing head massage to ensure that shampoo ingredients penetrate the scalp.
Next, he escorts Nicole to the basin area for a second round of shampooing!
While chatting with Kent, he recommends us normal people to try double shampooing even at home! This is because the first round would clear away the surface dirt while second round would allow the shampoo to penetrate and nourish the scalp.
Agent G has been trying this at home and has found that this method really helps to make the hair cleaner!
Step 4: Application of Scalp Spray
Now that the scalp pores is completely opened by the multiple rounds of shampoo, it is time to nourish it with Scalp Spray!
Kent first pours the scalp spray into a bottle, which will later be vaporised and applied to the scalp directly.
This breaks the molecules of the scalp spray so that it is smaller and more easily absorbable!
One last massage…
and a blow dry after, we are done!
Step 5: Final Scalp Analysis
To see if the scalp treatment was useful, a final scalp analysis is thus done!
Even at her crown, her follicles can now clearly be seen!
We didn’t expect to see such a huge difference after one session, so we’re impressed!
Conclusion
There’s a lot of salons out there which focuses on the experiential part of the scalp treatment but I’m glad to see that 99 Percent Hair Studio focuses more on making it effective for its customers.
We’re impressed to see the following:
- Stylists who are experienced and knowledgeable about hair and scalp health
- Long time spent on exfoliating scalp, shampooing hair and applying scalp treatment spray
- Use of organic hair products which are safe for pregnant ladies and even people who have just gone through major illnesses
- Immediate improvement in scalp condition after one session
Best of all, prices are really affordable at $80 per treatment, compared to more than $100 for most salons we know.
For the time, effort and efficacy, we really do think that 99 Percent Hair Studio‘s Signature Scalp Treatment ranks way up there among the best!
If you’ve tried, let us know if you feel the same way or if you think we’re way off base here!
